Description
einem sem @me entre HORACE n. HOLMES, 0E ELMIRA, NEW YoEKfAss'IGNoR' To Eins-ELE, J. D. DAL-E, IRA s. BEEEs, AND J. H.- DALE.
Letters lPatent No. 99,318, dat-ed .February 11,1870.
' :MPROVBD RAILWAY-CAR VRrrunczm 4The Schedulewxeferred in Letters Patent andnsaking part of the same.
Be it known that I, HBCE H. HOLMES, of-tll'e i I city of Elmira, county of Cheuiungg and State 'ofrliewA AYork, -have invented a new-and useful Device forPut-' the-,following is a full and exact description ofthe oon..-a struction and operation vot' the4 same, lre1,`eren'ce being` hadto theannexed drawings, making part of this spec-.'.
riticstion, in'whieh Figni'e 1 is a perspective of switch as it is used.
Figure 2 is a plan ofthe same.
' Figure 3 is a view'oi'l rail, v with swivel. y
Figure 4 is a vie".7 ofthe end of wedge and rail. 'lo enable others skilled in the "art to make and use my inventioml will proceed .to describe its oonstruet-ion and operation. v l 1 make tivo wedges, A A', shown in g. 1, of about two feet in length and eight inches in width, of wood or other material, so as to put them between the truckwlreels ot'a car; '.lhey nre covered with iron, C C, figs. 1, 2, and 4, of suitable thickness, and o'fpsullieient strength to sustain the weight.
I use one plane wedge, A', on the inside of track, for the ilange ofthe car-wheel to run on, and in thickness'I make it halfen inch lower than the top of the track when it is in place, thus vpreventing the wheel from runningover und ofi ou the other s ide ofthe track, which is liable to happen to other arrangements used for the same' purpose. The other wedge, A, figs. l and 2, is made as thick as the rail is high', and of the same length as A'.
I place wedge A onthe outside of rail vor track, and against the same.
Wedge A is .provided with an adjustable ra-il,B, figs. l and 2, thick enough vfor the tread of; the wheelto :the tracklwithont ditiiculty.' v y j ',Lowerjend of rail B is.chamfered,wl1ile the upper fendis provided with a swivehl), shown-in iisxl, 3, and 4,`witha flange, li F, iig. 4, projecting down, that fitsthe track, and by turning it from one side to the other of wedge A, it'esn lbe used on eitherthe-right or left side ot' track, so that the same device may be' used to replace -zrcar upon 4the track, no mutter whether it is upon the iight or left. At'th'e cent-re of ruil B, is a bolt, E, that secures it to wedge A, and is sutliciently free to allow it to be moved from one side of wedge A .to the other, so that vit may beus'ed either right or left.
The'swivel D,-h'gs. 2, 3, and4, hzt'sauges F F, g. 4, which project down, and t track, preventingr adjustable rail from moving while the lwheels are being drawnlon or replacedl uponthe track.
It will be seen thata ear, in this way, can be putupou the track in a few moment-s.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A portable switch or car-replacer, composed of a wooden wedge, A, covered on both sides' with sheet-- metzil, and provided with the pit'oted'lail B and swivel D, attached thereto, all constructed and arranged .to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
2. 1n combination with the above, the wedge A,
