WILLIAM BLACK, OF HAGERSTOWN, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 99,283, dated February 1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl: of the same.
- To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM BLACK, of Hagerstown, in the county of Wayne, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and improved Sewing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a t'ull and exact description thereof, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in Which- Fignre llvrepresents a side view of my sewing-machine.
Figure 2 represents an end view of the same.
Figure 3 represents a view of the under side of the machine.A
Iigurelrepresents-the feeding-device detached from the machine.
Figure 5 represents the shuttle-carrier.
The object of my invention is to construct a sewingmachine, which will be easily managed, and simple in its parts, so that it will he inexpensive, and yet have allthe advantages of high priced shuttle-machines, and
it relates to the construction and arrangement ot' the mechanism by which I impart the proper movements to the shuttle-carrier, needle-arm, and feeding-dog.
To enable others skilledn the art to make and` use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same, with reference to the drawings, in which-- A represents the bed-plate of the machine, to which is attached the standing frame B, which carries at its forward end thel presser-footG, while the needle-bar D is pivoted to itsrear end at n..
-To the under side ofthe bed-plate A is also attached the plate E, which serves as bearing and guide to the shuttle-carrier F, which is pivotcd to it, and oscillates on its pivot b,
The shuttle-canier F has a direct vibrating motion with the needle, by means of the connecting-rod f, which has one epd attached at c, to the shuttle-carrier, and the other at el, to the needle-bar D.
Motion is imparted to the machine by means of the pulley G, which is hung in bearings ee, attached to the under side ofthe bed-plate A.
i '.ihis pulley G rotates the axle g, to which is attached the disk-crank H. The object of this crank is twofold.
First, it operates the needle-bar D, by means of the slotted connecting-rod h, which connects the two together; and
Second, by means of the swell or cnmm thereon, it raises the feeding-hand I against the under side of the work, after the needle has ascended.
This hand is moved laterally to move the work for a new stitch, by the projection k on the side of the pulley G.
'follows 1 A rever, k is putita' 'to the-underside of. the 010th plate at n, and one endis free to come in contactwith a pin or stud, fr, on the feed-hand bar at any point in' the length of its play in its heariugs,'iixed by the pin and holes, p q. Thus, the bar of the feed-hand or dog may slide the whole of the distance due to the spread ofthe cam K', or it may be arrested by the end ofthe lever, bearing against the pin nso that but a portion ofthe cam-surface will act to throw it forward.
The operation of the machine is as fellows:
rIhe shuttle L being introduced into the recess provided for itin the upper part of the shuttle-carrier F, and the needle being fed from a spool' placed on the spool-carrier S, through the tension-regulator t, 'and 4 guides, the pulley G is revolyed, and with it the crank H, which operates the needle-bar D, by means of -the I slotted rod h, the shuttle-carrier moving forward and backward by means of the connecting-rod f, attachedl to' the lower end of the needle-bar D, at the same time that a proper feeding-motion is'given to the feed-hand I, by the projection k on the pulley Gr, and cam projection m on the crank II, in connection with the spring l.
NVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl The described arrangement of mechanism for operating the needle-arm, and the slnittle-carryinglever, the same consisting in the slotted link h, connecting the crank H to thc needle-arm, and the link f connecting the 'rec end of the shuttle-.carrier to the lower arms of the needle-bar.
Also, in connection with the above-named'arrangement, the lifting-cam m on the crank, and the side cam k, on the driving-wheel or pulley, for imparting the positive movements to the feeding-dog.- y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing invention, I have hereunto set my hand, this 13th day of February, 1869.
WILLIAM BLACK.
