Tothis end the invention consists in a construction in which theigniter is shielded and cut off from the hotgases in the cylinder during the greater portion of the power stroke; lfurther, inthe peculiar con struction of thev hield or'y cutoff; and, fur-A ther, in the combination of this shield and a valve for controlling the ports of t-he engine, as hereinafter set forth'.

What I claim as my invention is: In an explosion engine, the. combination with 'a piston, of a cylinder form'in the explosion chamber, said cylinder being' pro- 75"' vided with a port and having a recess in one side thereof above the highest point of travel of the piston, an electric 4igniter positioned within 4said recess, and' a cylindrical sleeve 'between said piston and cylinder forming 80 a valve for controlling saidport and being provided with an extension serving as a shield for covering said recess subsequent to said explosion.
