LANTERN-GLOBE LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, "VILLIAM C. EM- BURY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lantern-Globe Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to globe lifters, such as are used in connection .with tubular lanterns of ordinary form, of the type in which a cranked lifter-shaft provided with a finger-lever is pivotally connected with the globe-plate of the lantern and is journaled on, or adjacent to, the side-tubes of the lantern.
The invention relates particularly to the member constituting a bearing and a detent for the lifter-shaft, and the object of the invention is to produce a device of this kind, capable of being formed of a single piece of sheet-metal, which shall besimple and rigid in structure and neat in appearance.
To this end the invention consists in a globe-lifter having the combined catchplate and bearing hereinafter described, as it is defined in the succeeding claim.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a.frontelevation of the lower portion of a "tubular lantern provided with the present inven- 1 tion; Fig. 2 is a front perspective view of a portion-= of the globe-lifter, including the combined catch-plate and bearing; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same parts from the rear.
The invention is illustrated as employed in connection with a tubular lantern of ordinary form, and in Fig. 1 portions of the lantern are illustrated, including the oilfont 4, the burner 5, the lobe 6 and the side-tubes 7 and 8. The -iigure also illustrates a cranked lifter-shaft 9 constructed of resilient wire and of the ordinary form, which is attached to the globe-plate 10 by the usual pivotal connections (not shown). The lifter-shaft 9 is provided at its righthand end withthe usual upwardly-bent finger-lever 11 which is arrangedv to lie between the side-tube 8 and the globe.
. The present invention resides particularly in the form of the combined catchplate, bearing and bearing-support for the shaft 9. This device comprises a vertical plate 12 which is perforated to receive the shaft 9. As shown in Fig. 3, the plate 12 is slotted inwardly from its edge to the perforation, thereby producing a tongue 13 which may be bent aside to admit the shaft and afterward bent back to close the hearing. The bearing-plate 12 is formed integral with a vertical side-plate 14 which connects one lateral edge of the bearing. plate with the side-tube 8 of the lantern. The side-plate 14 is preferably secured to the tube by soldering. A third portion of the bearing-support consists in a bottomplate 15 which extends inwardly from the lower edge of the bearing-plate ,to the sidetube and 1s soldered to the tube. The bottomplate 15 is also preferably integral with the bearing-plate and is joined to the lower edge of the'side-plate 14. The joint 16 between the plates 14 and 15'may be formed either by stamping these par-ts from a continuous piece of sheet-metal, or by uniting their edges by means of solder.
The catch-plate consists in an upward ex tension 17 from the side-plate 14. This catch-plate has, at its lower extremity, a shoulder 18 beneath which the finger-lever 11 is. retained when it has been depressed by the operator to raise the lantern-globe. Above the shoulder 18 the catch-plate has a long inclined cam-surface 19 over which the finger-lever. rides easily while being depressed. The lifter-shaft 9 is resilient, and
the finger-lever presses outwardly against the catch-plate, so that it is retained below the shoulder 18 until the finger-lever is pressed inwardly by the operator to release it. In the normal position of the parts the finger-lever is also retained in raised position by its engagement with the upper end ofthe catchplate.
The arrangement, at rightangles, of the side-plate 14 and the bottom-plate 15 by which theibearing-plate is supported produces a very rigid structure in which vertical strains are resisted eflfectively by the side-plate 14, while horizontal strains are resisted by the bottom-.platel5, since these plates lie with their {greatest dimensions in these two respective directions. I claim In combination with a tubular lantern, a globe, a globe-lifter comprising a cranked lifter-shaft connected with the globe-plate of the lantern and provided with a fingerlever located between the globe and one of the side-tubes of the lantern, and a combined bearing and catch-plate tor the liftershaft comprising a vertical bearing-plate located between the globe and the fingerlever and perforated to receive the liftershaft, a bottom-plate connecting the lower 15 edge of the bearing-plate with the tube, a vertical side-plate arranged at a right angle with the bottom-plate and connecting a lateral edge of the bearing-plate with the tube, and a catch-plate above the side-plate 20 \VILLIAM C.
