Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1911.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORGAN D. JONES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Florala, in the county of Covington and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Level, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to levels, and espe cially to the supports thereof.
It has for its principal objects the provision of a simple and convenient device of this. character.
It consists in the various features and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof partly in section, looking from the left in Fig. 1 and with one leveling screw omitted; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of a portion of the frame and level mounted thereon.
1O designates a rod or Jacob staff having the usual pointed end 11 by which it may be fixed in the ground. At the upper end. of the staff is mounted an arm 12, preferably by a shank 13 which is driven vertically into said rod, the arm being inclined at an angle thereto.- At the upper end of this arm is a horizontal portion 14, in the upper face of which is a depression 15. Carried by this arm is a support or rest, which is here shown as in the form of a frame having a main or connecting member 16, from which extends, substantially at right angles, a rounded projection or arm 17. By this arm is carried a level 18 having a hole through which the projection extends and being retained thereon by a nut 19 operating upon the threaded end of the projection. The level may be of the type ordinarily employed by carpenters, but having mounted upon it opposite sights 20, 20. Projecting from the member 16 below the arm 17 is an extended arm 21 having upon its under side near the center a pivot projection or pin 22, which'is adapted for 00- action with the depression 15 in the staffarm. Upon each side of this pivot-pin, through the extremities of the arm 21, is threaded a screw 23 which may be turned up against the level to adjust its angle and clamp it in position upon the arm 17. From the lower end of the member 16 projects a third arm 24 at the same side as its companions, and from this last-named arm depends a plummet-rod 25 having fixed upon it a suitable plummet or weight 26, said rod being substantially at right angles to the arm 21.
In using the level, the rod is forced into the ground and the support placed upon the staff-arm with its pivotpro-jection resting in the depression, the level having been previously fixed in place at the proper angle by means of the arm 17 and the adjustingscrews. The plummet at once brings the level to a horizontal position, or, if it has not been properly adjusted upon its frame, any departure from the correct setting may be compensated for by manipulating the screws. Then, when it is desired to change the position of the device, the level and its frame can be removed and carried in one hand, the rod withdrawn with the other, and upon fixing the latter in its new location and placing the frame upon it, the level will at once arrange itself horizontally. In addition to this automatic leveling action, it should be noted that the frame may be turned upon its pivot in any direction without permanently disturbing its horizontal adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A level-support comprising a main member and three arms, one of which is adapted to receive a level, screws threaded through an adjacent arm and cooperating with the level, a pivot-projection carried by this last-named arm, and a weighted rod extending from the third arm.
2. In a device of the character specified, a bar having a pointed projection at approximately the center thereof, an arm extending on each side .of the bar, a level pivoted to the bar above the projection, a Weighted name to this specification in the presence of rod connected with the lower end of the two subscribing Witnesses.
