To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Pocket-Recorder for Expense-Accounts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pocket recorders for expense accounts, and the objects of my improvement are, to provide a pocket recorder for expense or other accounts which shall be simple in construction and efficient in operation.
From years of experience, I know there has been a demand especially among the traveling public, for a more satisfactory method of-keeping a detail record of their personal and business expenses. Very few expense accounts are correct, from the fact that a portion of this account is generally made up from memory. There are times when it is not policy to make a not-e of an expenditure in a book, such as treating, etc. For the above reasons, I have invented an expense recorder which gives, not only a printed detail statement of all expenses, but also classifies these expenses. In addition to this, my device will give a total of the itemized expenses, which can be read at a glance at any time during the day, week, or month, thus making it possible to balance cash on hand at any time without disturbing the weekly or monthly itemized statement.
My invention is very quick in operation, and after familiarity with its use is attained, can be operated without being removed from the pocket. The means for making the detail record is so arranged that it can be spaced daily, thus separating each days expenditures from those of "the previous day, making it possible to know, not only the amount of expenditure, and for what purpose, but also the date thereof.
These objects and advantages 1 attain by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view; Fig. 2 is an edge view; Fig. 3 is an enlarged back view, with showing the cover and back plate removed, the recording elements at zero position; F1g. 1 is a back view with the cover and dollar slide,
plate removed, showing the parts set to record an amount, and the printing mechanism in action; Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section, on the line AB of Fig. 1, looking to the left, and with the lid partly open; Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section, on the line A.B of Fig. 1, looking to the right; and Fig. 7 is a front view showing the lid open.
In carrying out my invention I provide an inclosing case 1, preferably in the shape of a watch case, with a hinged lid or cover 2. The operating parts T prefer to arrange in a cup shaped container 3, that can be removed from the case 1, allowing free access to the entire mechanism. The printing mechanism I prefer to attach to the lid 2, in order that it may be readily accessible. Around the inner surface of the rim or cup 3 I arrange a group of annular slides 4:8, in number corresponding to the capacity of the device. An annular slide is provided for each period, that is, cents, dimes, dollars, etc., of the amount it is possible to record, and an additional slide bearing characters for indicating the account to which the amount recorded is chargeable. For the purpose of this description, the annular slides l7, intended to register and record amounts, will be referred to collectively as numeral slides and individually as cent, dime, dollar and ten-dollar slides. The annular slide intended for recording characters indicating the account to which the recorded item is chargeable will be referred to as the item slide. 1n the drawings, 4 refers to the cent slide, 5' to the dime slide, 6 to the 7 to the ten-dollar slide, and 8 to the item slide. The slides 47-8 are divided into four arcuate sections. The sections of the first series beginning at the stem and proceeding clockwise (Fig. 7) and contra-clockwise (Figs. 3 and l) are disposed concentric with the rim of the case, and are provided with teeth, 9, thus forming a section of crown gear. Pinions 10-1& are provided which mesh with the crown gear sections 9. Pinions 1O-1 l are secured to the inner ends of sleeves 1519, on the outer ends of which are flanges, 202&, having characters on the edges thereof correspondmg to the characters to be recorded. The back l annular slides are operated by means of the flanges 20-2d-, through sleeves 1519, pinions 1014, and crown gears 9, into posit1on to record the desired character.
1e numeral slides are held in position against movement when in Zero position, or in a position to make a record, by means of dogs, 25 2S, that pivot on a post, 29, and the point of which, 30 engages between teeth, 32, on the second section of the numeral slides. The dogs 25-28 are offset, as shown clearly in Fig. 5, so that a heel, 31, of a dog rests on one slide while the point, 30, engages another of the next lower denomination. That is, the dog 25, resting on the dime slide, locks the cent slide; and the dog 26, resting on the dollar slide, locks the dime slide; the dog 27, resting on the ten dollar slide, locks the dollar slide; the dog 28 resting on the item slide, locks the ten dollar slide. The dogs 26-27-28 have pins, 33, that extend over the dogs of the next lower denomination respectively, that is, the pin in dog 28 extends over dog 27,- and the pin in dog 27 extends over dog 20, and so on. The movement of any slide of higher denomination than the dime slide will, by raising the heel 31 of the dog resting on it, depress the point 30 and lock the slide of next lower denomination, through pin 33, depress the dog over the next slide of lower denomination, thus looking all slides of lower denomination. TV hen in the zero position, an elevated portion 34, on the item slide 8, raises the heel 31 of dog 28, depressing the point 30, and through pins 33 brings points 30, on dogs 27-2G-25, into teeth 32 on the numeral slides, thus locking all of them. It will thus be seen that the numeral slides are locked in the zero position as long as the item slide remains in the zero position. The first tooth of the series of locking teeth on the numeral slides, is omitted, leaving a space, 35, that the heel of the locking dog, pivoted above that slide, may drop into if not pre vented by other means.
From the foregoing it will be perceived that the numeral slides are normally locked in the Zero position. hen the item slide is advanced, by means of flange 20, sleeve 15 and pinion 10, it will remove the elevated portion 34 of the item slide 8 from under heel 31 of dog 28, allowing the dog to drop, raising point 30 and pin 33, and thus freeing all the locking dogs. Any numeral slide may now be moved to recording posi tion. To set up a number to record it will be necessary to set the lowest denomination first. If it is desired to record $5.25, the cent slide must first be moved to 5, the dime slide to :2, then the dollar slide to 5. If, on the contrary, the dollar slide were first moved to 5, the cent slide and dime slide would be locked and could not be moved without first returning the dollar slide to zero. third series of sections of the annular slides are attached segments, 36, facing the cen ter, on which are provided raised characters or type from which the record is made. The base plate, 37, of the printing mechanism {S a central vertical slot, 38, through which screws, 39l0, extend, to hold the plate in movable relation to the lid 2. A post, 1-1, is provided, adapted to carry a spool of paper, 42. A bracket, -l3, has attached to it a platen, H. A spool, 17, adapted to receive a web of paper, is mounted on a. post, 45, provided w'th a ratchet wheel, 16. A lever, 4-8, pivoted at 19, has an ink roller, 50, mounted on its lower end, and a pawl, 51, on its upper end adapted to engage the ratchet wheel 46. The pawl serves to prevent backward movement of ratchet wheel 46. A bracket, 53, is secured to the upper part of base plate 37 and lies in the path of plunger 75, when the lid is closed. A spring, 54, serves to keep plate 37 at the upward limit of its movement. The web of paper is brought down from spool 42, under platen ll, and up to the spool -l7.
The fourth series of sections of the numeral slides have gear teeth, 56, thus forming sections of internal gears to actuate a registering or totaling device. The registering or totaling device in itself forms no part of my invention, as any of the well known devices may be used, I prefer to use the simple one shown in the drawings. Number wheels 57, and attached pinions 58, are mounted in a frame, (30. Springs, (51, are fastened to the frame 60 and bear on pinions 58. The frame 60 is mounted to swing on an eccentric, 62, and is provided with a slot, (53, in an arm, (3%, at right angles to the body of the frame. A lever, 65, has a tooth, 66, which enters slot 63. The opposite end, (37, of lever 65, drops into a depression, (38, on the item slide 8, when the same is at zero position, and rides on an elevated portion of the slide, 6!), when the slide moved to recording position. The eccentric (32 pivots on a pin, 70. An arm, '71, is attached to eccentric G2 and has at its opposite end a link, 72, which, in turn, is provided with a finger, 73, adapted to engage a pin. 74-, on plunger 75, and a finger, 76, adapted to engage the end of. item slide 8 (Big. '7 A post, 17, serves as a stop to limit the motion of arm 71. A post, 78, serves as a stop for link 72. Bloving the arm 71 shifts eccentric G2, and it acts through frame (it) as a lever of the third class, with tooth (36 as the fulcrum, to raise the totaling mechanism out of mesh with internal gear segments 56. Spring 7:) is at tached to the arm 71 and to frame 60 and aids in raising the frame (30. Spring 79 also retracts the arm 71 when the link 72 is disengaged from pin 74 by the item slide 8 impinging on finger 76.
To prepare my recorder lid 2 is opened (Fig. 7); a spool of paper is placed on post 41; the end of the paper is passed below platen 41 i and attached to spool 47 on post 45; and ink is placed on roller 50. Closing the lid brings bracket 53 and bracket 13 carrying the platen A4 into alinement with stem 75 (Figs. 3 and 4t).
The operation of my recorder may be described as follows: Assuming that the parts are in the zero position, as shown in Fig. 3, and that it is desired to register and record an amount spent for railroad fare, and that G is the character chosen to indicate an item chargeable to railroad fare. On attempting to rotate the flanges 20 2 1 it will be found that only the item flange 20 can be moved. The item flange 20 is rotated until the letter G on the edge thereof is in line with the face of the case. As flange 20 rotates it acts through sleeve 15, pinion 10, and crown gear 9 to advance the item slide 8. The advance of slide 8 causes the following sequence: 1st. Part 3 1 (Fig. 3) moves from under the heel 31 of dog 28 allowing the heel to drop, raising its pin 33, and freeing the dogs (Figs. 5 and 7) 272625 in succession, thus allowing any of the numeral slides to be moved. 2nd. The letter G, on the type segment 36, is brought into printing position under platen 4 L. 3rd. The elevated portion 69 of the item slide 8 raises the end 67 of lever 65; tooth 66 pushes arm 64: upward; frame is swung on eccentric 62; and pinions 58 of the totaling device are thrown into mesh with for operation, the
the internal gear segments 56 on the numeral slides. If the railroad fare amounted to $5.25, the cent flange 2a would be rotated to bring the character 5, on the edge thereof, in line with the character G. As flange 21- rotates it acts through sleeve 19, pinion 1A, and gear 9, to advance the cent slide 4; five points, registering 5 on the units wheel of the totaling device and bringing the character 5, on the type segment 36 into printing position under the platen. The dime flange 23 is then rotated to bring the character 2, on the edge thereof, into alinement with the character 5 and the character G already set up. As flange 23 rotates it acts through sleeve 18, pinion 13, and gear 9 to advance the dime slide 5 two points, registering 2 on the tens wheel of the totaling device and bringing the character 2, on the type seg ment 36, into printing position. As dime slide 5 advances it raises its heel 31 (Fig. 7) of dog 25, depressing its point 30 into the locking-teeth 32 on the cent slide 1, locking the cent slide in position. The dollar flange 22 is then rotated to bring the character 5 on the edge thereof into alinement with the character G and characters 5 and 2 already set up. As dollar flange 22 rotates it acts through sleeve 17, pinion 12 and its crown gear 9 to advance the dollar slide 6 five l l l l l points, registering 5 on the dollar wheel of the totaling device and bringing the character 5, on its type segment 36, into printing position. As dollar slide 6 advances it raises the heel 31 of dog 26, depressing its point 31 into the teeth 32 of the dime slide 5, looking it in position. The amount spent having now been registered on the totaling device and set up on the type segments for record, the printed record is made by depressing stem 75 by means of head 80, causing the stem to impinge on the bracket 53, attached to base plate 37 and forcing the printing mechanism downward upon the type. As the plate 37 descends, the ink roller 50 comes into contact with the type set up for record, inking them. When the ink roller 50 moves over the type, the lever 48, to which it is attached, is actuated, and, by means of the pawl 51, advances the ratchet wheel 46 one point and with it the spool 17, winding the printed web of paper onto spool 47 and presenting a fresh surface of paper under platen 44. The continued movement downward of the plate 37 brings the paper 55, which rests against the face of the platen, into contact with the type, in this case G525, set up on the type segments for record, printing said characters on the web of paper. When the pressure is re-- moved from the stem head 80, spring 54- returns the printing mechanism to its normal position. As the printing mechanism. returns to its normal position stem 7 5 rises with it. As stem 7 5 rises, pin 7% thereon engages the finger 7 3 on link 7 2, raising arm 71 and, through the action of eccentric 62, as heretofore explained, raises the totaling mechanism from engagement with the numeral slides. There being now no restraining means, the numeral slides are automatically returned to their Zero position by the springs 81, the springs 81 being secured at one end to the slides and at the other to the container 3. The item slide 8 must be returned to the zero position manually, by means of the flange 20. On its return to zero position its end strikes the finger '76 of link 72, pushing it off of pin 74 on stem 7 5, and spring 79 pulls arm 71 down, until it strikes post 7 8. The movement of arm 71 shifts the eccentric 62 and, acting on the frame 60 as a lever of the third class, lowers the totaling mechanism to aposition in which the lever 65 can throw the pinions 58 into mesh with teeth 56, as described.

This is an opening in the lid, through which may be seen the character stamped on the back of the crown gear section 9 of the annular slides corresponding to the type on the type segments 36 and the characters on the flanges 20-24:, thus makit easy to observe what amount has been m set up for record. In Fig. 2 I show an opening 83 through which the total 011 the totaling device may be seen.
Operating the printing mechanism, without registering and setting up an amount. will print a row of c'phers across the web of paper. By doing this the record of each days expenses may be kept separate from that of the previous day.
Having thus described my invention so that any one skilled in the art pertaining thereto may make and use it, I claim- 1. In a pocket recorder for expense accounts, a case, a totalregistering device, slides for actuating the same, means for actuating said slides, characters on said slides from which a record may be made of the amount registered, and means for printing such record.
2. In a pocket recorder for expense ae counts, a case, a total-registering device, annular slides for actuating the same, means extending externally of said case for operating said slides. characters borne by said slides from which a record may be made of the amount registered, and printing mechanism for making such record.
3. In a pocket recorder for accounts, a case, a total-registering device, annular slides for actuating the same means for actuating said annular slides, means for engaging and disengaging the tota -reg.istering device with said slides, means for locking said slides in nonoperative and operative position, characters borne by said slides from which a. record may be made, and printing mechanism for making such record.
at. In a pocket recorder for expense accounts, a watch-like case, a total-registering device, a slide arranged around the inner wall of said case and. adapted to operate said total-registering device, and means extending externally of said case for operating said slide.
