To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES V. KEARNS, citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress-Forms, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to dress forms comprising an outer skeleton and an inner supporting structure connected with the outer skeleton and adapted to be adjusted to alter the shape and vary the size of the same.
The object of the invention is to provide, in a dress form of the class to which my invention relates, a novel, simple and efficient construction and organization of parts whereby numerous desirable adjustments of the parts may be readily effected'to vary the size and contour of the igure.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, I shall first describe the outer system of contour plates simulating the ligure of a person, and thereafter describe the inner adjustable supporting structure for the contour plates.

The neck band 7 comprises side plates 15, and front and back plates 16 and 17 respectively. These plates 15, 16 and 17 overlap each other and are arranged to slide upon each other to permit the expansion and contraction of the neck band, the plates being held in positions of adjustment by suitable clamping screws 18 engaging the side plates 15 and extending through slots in the front and back plates 16 and 17. It will thus be seen that by loosening the screws 18 the neck band 7 may be expanded or contracted as desired.
The bust band 8 comprises side plates 19, and front and back plates 20 and 21 respectively. The plates 19, 2O and 21 overlap each other, and the end of each plate is provided with a suitable band 22 which extends around the adjacent plate in a manner to hold the plates forming the bust band tolgether and to permit them to be adjusted longitudinally of each other to expand and contract the bust band as desired.
The waist band 12 comprises side plates 23 and front and back plates 24 and 25 respectively. The plates 23, 24 and 25 overlap each other, and the end of each plate is provided with a suitable band 26 which extends around the adjacent plate in a manner to hold the plates forming the waist band together and to permit them to be adjusted longitudinallyof each other to expand and contract the waist band as desired.
The .hip band 13 comprises side plates 27 and front and back plates 28 and 29 respectively. The plates 27 28 and 29 overlap each other, and the end of each plate is provided with a suitable band 30 which extends around the adjacent plate in a manner to hold the plates forming the hip band together and to permit them to be adjusted longitudinally of each other to expand and contract the hip band as desired.
The bottom plate 14 comprises side plates 31 and front and back plates 32 and 33 respectively. The plates 31. 32 and 33 overlap each other, and the end of each plate is provided with a suitable band 34 which extends around the adjacent plate in a manner to hold the plates forming the bottom band together and to permit them to be adjusted longitudinally of each other to expand and contract the bottom band as desired.
Secured to the side plates 15 of the collar band 7 are the inner ends of outwardly extending shoulder plates 35, the outer ends of whichn are bent inwardly to form loops 36. Extending through each loop 36 is the upper portion of a pair of circularly arranged arm plates 37 38, the end portions of which overlap each other and are provided with suitable bands 39 which extend around the plates in a manner to hold them in engagement with each other and permit them to be adjusted longitudinally of each other to expand and contract the arm portion of the figure as desired.
The back plates 38 of the pairs of arm plates are secured to the outer ends of a horizontally arranged back brace 46, which comprises a central plate 41, and outer plates 40 overlapping the central plate 41, the outer ends ot' the outer plates 40 being` secured to the plates 38 ot the pairs of aim plates.
The plates 40 and 41 are provided with suitable bands 42 which extend around the plates 40 and 41 in a manner to hold them in engagement with each other and permit their adjustment longitudinally of each other to lengthen and shorten the back plates 46 and permit the pairs of arm plates to be adjusted toward and from each other to vary the distance between said pairs, the loops 36 of the shoulder plates 35 permitting this adjustment of the pairs of arm plates.
The shoulder plates 35 are connected to the bust band 8 by upper and lower , plates 43 and 44 respectively, which overlap each other and are provided with suitable bands 45 holding them in engagement with each other in a manner to permit them to be adjusted longitudinally of each other to permit the bust band 8 to be adjusted toward and from the shoulder plates 35.
The shoulder plates 35 are connected to the back brace 46 by upper and lower plates 47 and 48 respectively, which overlap each other and are provided with suitable bands 49 holding them in engagement with each other in a manner to permit them to be adjusted longitudinally of each other to permit the adjustment of the back brace 46 toward and from the shoulder plates 35.
The bust band 8 is connected to the waist band 12 by upper and lower side plates 50 and 51 respectively, which overlap each other and are provided with suitable bands 52 holding them in engagement with each other in a manner to permit them to be adjusted longitudinally of each other.
Connected to the bust band 8 are the upper ends of front plates 53 which extend 'downwardly from the bust band and over lap the upper portions ot plates 54 which are arranged inwardly of the waist band 12. The lower portions of the plates 54 extend below the waist band 12 and overlap the upper portions of plates 55 which extend upwardly from the bottom band 14. The plates 55 extend upwardly from the bottom band 14 and are arranged outwardly of the hip band 13, the lower ends of the plates 55 being attached to the bottom band 14. The plates 54 are provided with suitable bands 56 and 57 which embrace the plates 53 and 55 respectively in a manner to permit the plates 53, 54 and 55 to be adjusted longitudinally of each other.
The hip band 13 and bottom band 14 are connected together by side plates 58 which extend above the hip band 13 and overlap plates 59 extending downwardly from the waist band 12. The upper ends of the plates 58 are provided with suitable bands 60 which embrace the lower portions of the plates 59 to permit slight longitudinal adjustment of the plates 58 with respect to the plates 59.
Extending centrally down the front of the ligure from the neck band 7 to the bottom band 14, is a series of overlapping plates as follows: Secured to the front plate 16 of the neck band 7 is the upper end ot a plate 61 which overlaps a plate 62 extending upwardly from the bust band 8. The upper end of the plate 62 is provided with a suitable band 63 which embraces the plate 61, and the lower end of the plate 61 is provided with a clamping screw 18 which extends through a slot in the plate 62. The plate 62 extends downwardly from the bust band 8 and overlaps the upper portion of a plate 64 extending upwardly from the waist band 12. rlhe upper end of the plate 64 is provided with a clamping screw 18 extending through a slot in the plate 62. The plate 64 extends downwardly below the waist band 12 and overlaps the upper portion of a plate 65 extending upwardly from the hip band 13. The lower portion of the plate 64 is provided with a clamping screw 18 which extends through a slot in the plate 65. The plate 65 also extends between and is connected to the hip band 13, and the bottom band 14. From this description it will be seen that by loosening the clamping screws 18 the centrally arranged front plates just described may be adjusted longitudinally of each other and then clamped in their positions of adjustment by tightening the clamping screws 18.
Extending centrally down the back of the ligure from the neck band 7 to the bottom band 14, is a series of overlapping plates as follows. Secured to the back plate 17 of the neck band 7 is the upper end of a plate 66 which overlaps a plate 67 extending upwardly from the brace 46. The lower end of the plato 66 is provided with a clamping screw 18 which extends through a slot in the upper portion of the plate 67. The plate 67 extends downwardly from the back brace 46 and overlaps the upper portion of a plate 68 extending upwardly from the bust band 8. The upper' end of the plate 68 is provided with a clamping screw 18 extending through a slot in the plate 67. The plate 68 extends downwardly from the bust band S and overlaps the upper portion of a plate 69 extending upwardly from the waist band 12. The upper portion of the plate 69 is provided with a clamping screw 18 extending through a slot in the plate 68. rlhe plate 69 extends downwardly below the waist band 12 and overlaps the upper portion of a plate 70 extending upwardly from the hip band 13. The upper portion of the plate 70 is provided with a clamping screw 18 which extends through a slot in the plate 69. The plate 7 0 also extends between and is connected to the hip band 13 and bottom band 14. From this description it will be seen that by loosening the clamping screws 18 the centrally arranged back plates just described may be adjusted longitudinally of each other and then clamped in their positions of adjust-ment by tightening the clamping screws 18.
The plates of the system of contour plates hereinbefore described are shaped and arranged to simulate a portion of the figure of a person, and by the construction and arrangements of the plates the same may be adjusted in any desirable manner to vary the size and contour of the figure. This system of contour plates constitutes the outer dress form and is supported upon an inner standard in a manner to permit the various adjustments of the contour plates to vary the figure. 1 shall now proceed to describe the means for thus supporting the system of contour plates.
Arranged within the outer dress form is a standard 71 comprising a lower portion 72 and an upper screw-threaded portion 73 rising from the lower portion 72. The lower portion 72 is adapted to be connected to and supported by any suitable base.
Projecting horizontally from the lower portion 72 of the standard 71 within the hip band 13, are laterally extending telescopic arms 74 and 75 and a rearwardly extending telescopic arm 76. The outer end of the telescopic arm 74 is secured to one side plate 27 of the hip band, the outer end of the telescopic arm 75 is secured to the other side plate 27 of the hip band, and the outer end of the telescopic arm 76 is secured to the back plate 29 of the hip band. The telescopic arms 74, 75 and 76 are alike in construction, and therefore 1 shall describe but one arm in detail; and for this purpose l have selected the arm 74.
Referring now to Figs. 5, 6 and 7 the arm 74 comprises an outer tubular portion 77 projecting iixedly from the standard. 71, and an inner tubular portion 78. The inner end of the tubular portion 78 extends into and is slidingly fitted to the outer portion of the tubular portion 77, and the outer end of the tubular portion 78 extends into an opening in the side plate 27 and is secured to said plate. The inner end of the tube 78 is split as at 79, to permit it to be expanded to engage and bind against the tube 77. Extending centrally through the tube 78 is a pin 80, the outer end of which is provided with a head 81 which is slidingly fitted to the interior of the tube 78 and extends normally a slight distance beyond the outer end thereof. The inner portion of the pin 8O extends through and is slidingly fitted to a block 82 which is held against longitudinal movement within the tube 78 by pins 83 as shown. The inner end of the pin is provided with a tapering head 84 positioned to engage the inner split end of t-he tube 78 and expand said end when the pin 8O is forced outwardly. rIhe pin 80 is normally forced outwardly by the action of a spring 85 encircling the pin 8O and bearing against the block 82 and the head 81. It will thus be seen that'if the head 81 be forced inwardly, the inner split end of the tube 78 will be permitted to contract to free it from binding engagement with the tube 77 to permit the tube 78 to be adjusted within the tube 77 to lengthen and shorten the arm 74 as desired. After the arm 74 has been adjusted to the desired position and inward pressure against the head 81 removed, the spring 85 will force the pin 80 outwardly and cause the head 84 to expand the inner split end of the tube 78 and loclr the tube 78 in its position of adjustment.
From the construction just described, it will be seen that the hip band 13 may be readily expanded or contracted laterally and rearwardly by the adjustment of the arms 74, 75 and 76.
Connected to the front plate 28 of the hip band 13 is the outer end of a telescopic arm 86 similar in construction to the telescopic arm 74. rlhe inner end of the arm 86 is provided with a block 87 the sides of which are secured to lateral arms 88 which extend rearwardly from the arm 86 one on each side of the standard 71. The rearward ends of the arms 88 are connected together by a block 89. The bottoms of the arms 88 are provided with notches 90 adapted to engage pins 91 extending laterally from the standard 71. The arms 86 and 88 form in effect a single arm which may be adjusted with respect to the standard 71 to expand or contract the forward portion of the hip band 13, the telescopic arm 86 forming a line adjustment and the engagement of the different notches 90 of the arms 81 with the pins 91 forming a quick, coarse adjustment. lt will thus be seen that the construction just described provides a wide range of adjustment for the forward portion of the hip band, which wide range of adjustment is particularly desirable in this portion of the figure.
Screwech on to the upper portion of the standard 71 are three sleeves, 92, 93 and 94,
provided with suitable hand operated wheels 95, 96 and 97 respectively. By turning the wheels 95, 96 and 97 the sleeves 92, 93 and 94 may be adjusted vertically upon the standard 71 independently of each other.
The sleeve 92 is provided with a pair 0f collars 98, 98 arranged in spaced relation to each other, and loosely surrounding the sleeve 92 between the collars 98, 98, is an adjustable collar or base 99. The collar 99 is fitted around the sleeve 92 and between the collars 98, 98, sufficiently loose to permit it to be rocked upon the sleeve.
The collar 99 is located within the waist band 12 and is provided with laterally extending telescopic arms 100, a forwardly extending telescopic arm 101, and a rearwardly extending telescopic arm 102. The outer ends of the telescopic arms 100 are connected to the side plates 23, the outer end of the telescopic arm 101 is connected. to the front plate 24, and the outer end of the telescopic arm 102 is connected to the back plate 25 of the waist band. The telescopic arms 100, 101, and 102 are similar in construction to the telescopic arm 74 hereinbefore described. It will thus be seen that the waist band 12 may be expanded or contracted laterally, forwardly and rearwardly as desired, by the adjustment of the telescopic arms connecting the waist band with the collar 99.
The sleeve 93 is provided with a pair of collars 103, 103, arranged in spaced relation to each other, and loosely surrounding the sleeve 93 between the collars 103, 103 is an adjustable collar or base 104. The collar 104 is fitted around the sleeve 93 and between the collars 103, 103, sufficiently loose to permit it to be rocked upon the sleeve.
The collar 104 is arranged within the bust band 8, and is provided with laterally extending telescopic arms 105, a forwardly extending telescopic arm 106, and a rearwardly extending telescopic arm 107. The outer ends of the telescopic arms 105 are connected to the side plates 19, the outer end of the telescopic arm 106 is connected to the front plate 20, and the outer end of the telescopic arm 107 is connected to the back plate 21 of the bust band. The telescopic arms 105, 106 and 107 are similar in construction to the telescopic arm 74 hereinbefore described. It will thus be seen that the bust band 8 may be expanded or contracted laterally, forwardly and rearwardly as desired, by the adjustment of the telescopic arms connecting the bust band with the collar 104.
The sleeve 94 is provided with a pair of collars 108, 108, arranged in spaced relation to each other, and loosely surrounding the sleeve 94 between the collars 108, 108, is an adjustable collar 109. The collar 109 is fitted 94 and between the collars 108, 108 sufficiently loose to permit it tourbe rocked upon the sleeve. The collar 108 is arranged in front of the back brace 46 and between the two pairs of arm plates, and is provided with laterally extending telescopic arms 110, and a rearwardly extending telescopic arm 111. The outer end of the telescopic arm 111 is connected to the back brace 46, and the outer ends of the telescopic arms 110 are connected to blocks 112, one block 112 being located centrally within one pair of arm plates 37, 38, and the other block 112 being located centrally within the other pair of arm plates 37, 38.
Projecting from each block 112 are two telescopic arms 113, 114. The outer ends of t-he arms 113 are connected to the front plates 37 and the outer ends of the arms 114 are connected to the back plates 38 of the pairs of arm plates. The telescopic arms 110, 111, 113 and 114 are each similar in construction to the telescopic arm 74 hereinbefore described. It will therefore be seen that by adjusting the arm 111 the back brace 46 may be adjusted toward and from the standard 71; that by adjusting the arms 110 the pairs of arm plates may be adjusted toward and from each other; and that by ad-y justing the arms 113 and 114the pairs of arm plates 37 38 may not only be adjusted to expand and contract the arm portions of the figure, but they may also be adjusted to move the arm portions of the figure forward ord backward with relation to the standar 71.

the waist band 12, the bust band 8 and the pairs of arm plates 37, 38 may be adjusted vertically with relation to each other and with relation to the hip band 13, and they may also be adjusted independently of each other. Before these various vertical adjustments are effected, however, it will be necessary to loosen certain of the clamp screws 18 which secure together the overlapping centrally arranged front and back contour plates.
The rocking engagement of the collars 99, 104 and 109 with the sleeves 92, 93 and 94 respectively, form important features of my invention, for the reason that they permit the adjustment of the angle of the waist band and the angle of the bust band and also the angle of the arm 111 for various shoulder and arm adjust-ments. After the desired adjustments of the contour plates by the rocking of the collars 99, 104 and 109 have been effected, the plates are secured in place by the clamping screws 18.
As hereinbefore described, the telescopic arms` 110 are similar in construct-ion to the arm 74, and it will therefore be seen that the outer portions of the arms 110 may be turned axially with respect to the inner portions thereof, thereby permitting the two pairs of arm plates 37 38 to be turned to effect the various desirable shoulder and arm adjustments.
The plates of the system of contour plates shown and described herein are shaped and arranged to simulate the figure of' a woman. It will be understood, however, that the contour plates may be readily shaped and arranged to simulate the figure of a man Without departing from my invention.
Various modifications in the parts of the device may also be made withoutldeparting from my invention.
I claim l. The combination of an inner standard, an outer adjustable dress form, a collar loosely surrounding said standard and adapted to be rocked thereon to adjust it to different angles, and connections between said collar and the outer form.
2. The combination of an inner standard, an outer adjustable dress form, a vertically adjustable sleeve surrounding the standard, a collar loosely surrounding the sleeve and rockable thereon, and connections between said collar and the outer form.
3. The combination of an inner, screwthreaded standard, an outer adjustable dress form, a vertically adjustable sleeve surrounding the standard and provided with screw-threads engaged with the screwthreads of the standard, a part roclringly connected to said sleeve, and a plurality of independently adjustable connections between said part and the outer form.
4. The combination of an inner standard, an outer adjustable dress form, a vertically adjustable sleeve surrounding the standard, two collars surrounding the sleeve in spaced relation to each other, an adjustable collar surrounding the sleeve between the two sleeve collars and fitted thereto and to the sleeve sufficiently loose to permit the adjustable collar to be rocked, and connections between said adjustable collar and the outer form.
5. The combination of an inner, screwthreaded standard, an outer adjustable dress form, a vertically adjustable sleeve surrounding the standard, two collars surrounding the sleeve in spaced relation to each other, said sleeve being provided with screwthreads engaged with the screw-threads of the standard, an adjustable collar surrounding the sleeve between the two sleeve collars and fitted thereto and to the sleeve suiiciently loose to permit the adjustable collar to be rocked, and connections between said adjustable collar and the outer form.
6. The combination of an inner standard, an outer adjustable dress form, a vertically adjustable sleeve surrounding the standard, two collars surrounding the sleeve in spaced relation to each other, an adjustable collar surrounding the sleeve between the two sleeve collars and fitted thereto and to the sleeve sufficiently loose to permit the adjustable collar to be rocked, a telescopically adjustable arm projecting from the adjustable collar and connected to the outer form, and means for holding said armin positions of adjustment.
7. The combination of an inner, screwthreaded standard, an outer adjustable dress form, a vertically adjustable sleeve surrounding the standard, two collars surrounding the sleeve in spaced relation to each other, said sleeve being provided with screwthreads engaged with the screw-threads of the standard, an adjustable collar surrounding the sleeve between the two sleeve collars and fitted thereto and to the sleeve suinciently loose to permit the adjustable collar to be rocked, a telescopically adjustable arm projecting from the adjustable collar and connected to the outer form, and means for holding said arm in positions of adjustment.
S. The combination of an inner standard, and outer adjustable dress form, a vertically adjustable sleeve surrounding the standard, two collars surrounding the sleeve in spaced relation to each other, an adjustable collar surrounding the sleeve between the two sleeve collars and fitted thereto and to the sleeve sufliciently loose to permit the adjustable collar to be rocked, and a plurality of telescopically adjustable arms radiating from said adjustable collar and connected to the dress form.
9. The combination of an inner standard, an outer adjustable dress form, two collars surrounding the standard in spaced relation to each other, an adjustable collar surrounding the standard between the two first named collars and tted sufficiently loose to permit the adjustable collar to be rocked, and connections between said adjustable collar and the outer form.
10. The combination of an inner standard, an outer adjustable dress form, two collars surrounding the standard in spaced relation to each other, an adjustable collar surrounding the standard between the two rst named collars and fitted suiiiciently loose to permit the adjustable collar to be rocked, and a plurality of telescopically adjustable arms radiating from said adjustable collar and connected to the dress form.
11. The combination of an inner standard, an outer adjustable dress form, a vertically adjustable member on the standard, a part rockingly connected to said member, and a plurality of laterally adjustable contrivances carried by said rocking part and connecting with said outer form at dierent points about its circumference, thereby permitting the diameter and shape of the outer form to be varied.
.12. The combination of an inner standard, an outer adjustable dress form comprising contour elements forming the arm holes of the form, a vertically adjustable member on the standard, a part rockingly connected to said member, laterally adjustable contrivances carried by the rocking part and extending toward the arm holes of the form, thereby permitting the arm-holes to be adjusted toward and from said rocking part, and adjustable devices carried by both otl said contrivances and connected with contour elements of the arm holes.
13. The combination with an outer dress form, of a plurality of laterally adjustable devices wit-hin and engaging said form, an inner standard and a part for supporting said devices, mounted on and adapted to be arranged at diti'erent angles to said standard.
14. The combination with an outer dress form, of an inneil standard, a part mounted 0n and adapted to be arranged at different angles to said standard, and means carried by said part comprising a plurality of devices connected with said form at dilferent points in its circumference and adapted to be independently operated to expand or contract said form in the vicinity of the several points of connection.
15. The combination with an outer dress form, of a plurality of laterally adjustable devices within and engaging said outer form, an inner standard, a part for supporting said devices mounted on and adapted to be arranged at different angles to said standard, and means to adjust said part vertically upon said standard.
16. The combination of an inner standard, an outer adjustable dress form, an arm comprising two members on opposite sides of the standard, a block connecting corresponding ends of the arm members, extensible connections between said block and the outer form, the arm members each being provided with notches, and pins extending in opposite directions from the standard, and adapted to engage notches in the respective arm members.
17. The combination of an inner standard, an outer adjustable dress form, and connections between said standard and the outer form, said connections including an outer tube, an inner tube adjustably engaged with the outer tube, and means for securing the tubes in positions of adjustment.
18. The combination of an inner standard, an outer adjust-able dress form and connections between said standard and the outer form, said connections including an outer tube, an inner tube having a split portion adj ustably engaged with the outer tube, and means for expanding the split portion of the inner tube.
19. T he combination of an inner standard, an outer adjustable dress form and connections between said standard and the outer form, said connections including an outer tube, an inner tube having a split portion adj ustably engaged with the outer tube, and means including a spring pressed pin for expanding the split portion of the inner tube.
20. In a dress form, the combination with an external skeleton, of an extender within' and engaging said skeleton, a support within the skeleton, and a base supporting said extender and mounted on, and adapted to be arranged at dierent angles to, said support.
