GAS-PRODUCER.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that l, HENRY CHArimiN PERDUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hobart, county of Lake, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Gas-Producers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gas generators and more particularly to means for agitating the fuel being converted into gas.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved gas producer of simple construction and efficient in operation and provided wit-h eflicient means for agitating the fuel to prevent caling and the formation of clinlers.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectie-n of a gas producer embodying my invention, and Fig. 2, a horizontal section -of the same.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a suitable gas generating chamber 1 mounted in a suitable water filled well or ash pan 2 through which the ashes of combustion may be removed in the usual manner. At either side chamber 1 is provided with water filled casings 3 and et in which hollow shafts 5 are rotatably mounted. A supply chamber 6 is secured to the exterior side of casing 3 in open communication with the open ends of shafts 5 and a supply pipe 7 leads to said chamber 6 and serves to supply air and steam thereto from a suitable source of supply. Outside of casing l shafts 5 are provided with worm wheels 8 meshing with worm gears 9 carried by an operating shaft `10 adapted to be driven by means of pulleys 11. Shafts 5 carry radial perforated projections 12 adapted to act as agitating arms when said shafts are rotated. At the top chamber 1 is provided with a common form of bellehopper feed 13 for the introduction of fuel into said chamber and with a gas flue 111 for the withdrawal of gas therefrom.
In operation a fire is started and maintained in chamber 1 and fuel sup-plied to said fire in the usual manner. Shaft 10 is operated to cause rotation of shafts 5 where- Specification of Letters Patent.

by arms 12 are caused to constantly agitate the fuel in the chamber to prevent caling or the formation of clinlrers and air and steam are introduced into said chamber through supply chamber 6 and the perforations in arms 12.
It will be observed that shafts 5 rotate in the same direction so that the projections 12 on adjacent sides of adjacentA shafts pass each other moving in opposite directions thus effectively crushing any large cinders or clinkers. By this construction it will be observed that the burning fuel will be constantly agitated and broken up to prevent the formation of clinlrers and air and steam supplied thereto to support combustion and produce the gas. The gas produced is drawn off through flue 14 in any usual or desired manner.
While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. l therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a gas generating chamber, of a plurality of hollow agitating members rotatably mounted in said chamber on substantially the same level and provided with shortI radial perforated projections; means for supplying air and steam to said members; and means for rotating said members in the same direction, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a gas generating chamber, of water cooled casings at opposite sides of said chamber; a 'plurality of hollow and perforated agitating shafts rotatably mounted in said casings on substantially the. same level; a supply chamber secured to one of said casings in open communication with the open ends of said shafts; means for supplying air and steam to said supply chamber; and means for rotating said shafts in the same direction, substantially as described. i
3. The combination with a gas generating chamber, of water cooled casings at opposite sides of said chamber; a plurality of hollow avgitating shafts rotatably mounted in said casings on substantially the same level and provided With short radial perforatedprojeetions; a supply chamber secured to one of said easings in open communication with the open ends of said shafts; means for supplying air and steam to said supply chamber; Worm Wheels on said shafts; an operating shaft carrying Worm gears meshing With said Wheels; and means for operating said 10 operating shafts, substantially as described.
