AUTOMATIC AIR-BRAKE APPLIANCE.

Be it known that I, Josnrn S. Barman, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millsap, in the county of Parker and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automatic Air-Brake Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in automatic air brakes, the object being to provide a device which can be connected to a car having an air brake system so as to operate the same in case of the car becoming derailed.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device which is so constructed that the same can be readily applied to a car using air brakes without changing the construction so that the brakes will be applied when the car jumps the track, the coupling of the air brakes being detached by a movable member which is engaged by the rail when the wheels leave the same.
A still further object of the invention is to providev a device which is so constructed and supported in position adjacent the wheels, that it will be impossible for the same to he accidentally operated.
lVith these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out .in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification :--Figure 1 is a transverse section through a portion of a car truck show ing the device in position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing A indicates a railroad car of the ordinary construction which is provided with the usual bolster B, and wheels O the above description being given so that the operation of my invention can be readily understood.
Mounted on the bolster adjacent one end are plates D and E, which are secured in position thereon by bolts F, said plates being provided with overhanging portions having openings in vertical alinement through which extends the vertical portion G of an L shaped operating member G, the lower Specification of Letters Patent.

horizontal portion forming a shoe G which is adapted to be brought into engagement with the rail when the wheels are derailed therefrom in such a manner as to force the member upwardly, as will be hereinafter fully described. The L shaped member G is provided with an upwardly projecting member G which extends through an opening formed in the outwardly projecting end portion of the bottom plate E so as to guide the same, and hold it in its proper position. The shoe portion G is adapted to be normally held adjacent the wheel in a plane above the tread of the same.
For preventing the member from being moved upwardlyby a slight blow of any kind, I provide the same with a collar 1 on which is mounted a heavy coiled spring J surrounding the portion G of the member G between the plates, the upper end bearing against the upper plate in such a manner that the tendency of the spring is to force the same downwardly in order to hold the shoe in its proper position.
Mounted on the upper end of the L shaped member, is a collar K provided with an outwardly projecting pin portion K which is connected to a coupling member L which co-acts with a coupling member M on the air pipe N of the air brake system, in such a manner that when the device is forced upwardly by coming into engagement with the rail or any other object, the coupling will be disconnected so as to apply the brakes and stop the train.
From a foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a device which can be readily installed on a car so as to operate the brakes automatically as soon as the car leaves the track.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a car provided with an air pipe having a coupling, of a pair of plates mounted on the bolster of the car provided with openings, a rod slidably mounted in said openings, a shoe carried by the lower end of said rod, a spring surrounding said rod between said plates, and means carried by the upper end of said rod for con necting the same to one member of the coupling.
