LUTHER MOHR OTTO, JR., 0F WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
OAR-STAKE POCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A1113 11 1911 Application filed November 12,1910.
Serial No. 592,111.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER MOHR O'r'ro, Jr., citizen of the United States, residing at Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Stake Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful invention in stake pockets or devices for holding stakes to flat or logging cars, and it relates more particularly to a stake pocket so constructed that it may be opened and the lower end of the stake inserted therein sidewise.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the device in place. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged side view of the device in place. Fig. 3 represents a top or plan view of the device open. Fig. 4 represents a front or face view of the device open. Fig. 5 represents a top view of a modification of the device closed. Fig. 6 represents a face View of the modification of the device closed.
In these drawings, the numeral 1 represents the stake pocket. This stake pocket is made with its back plate 2 and sides 3 and 4 in one piece in the first modification. The back plate 2 is provided with wings 5 and 6 in which are bolt holes 7 and 8 through which pass the bolts 9 and 10 which secure the device to the car 11. The sides 3 and 4 have their inner faces 12 and 13 made with a gradual slope downward so that the tops 14 and, 15 of these sides are thinner than their bottoms 16 and 17. At their outer, ends 18 and 19 these sides 3 and 4 are each provided with three knuckles 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25, spaced apart as shown. The knuckles 21 and 22 of the side 3 are provided on the rear with notches 26 and 27. The open front of the pocket 1 is closed by a door 28 which, like the sides 3 and 4, slopes gradually downward so that its top 29 is thinner than its bottom 30 the inner face 30' sloping downwardly from the top 29 to the bottom 30. This door 28 is provided with two knuckles 31 and 32 adapted to fit between the knuckles 20, 21 and 22 of the side 3, and having notches 33 and 34 corresponding to the notches 26 and 27 of the knuckles 21 and 22. To the outer end of the side 4 is hinged a latch 35. This latch is made with two bearings or knuckles, 36 and 37 which come between the knuckles 23, 24 and 25 at the outer end 19 of the side 4. The latch 35 has a lip 38 extending out in front of the pocket and adapted to catch over the outer edge of the door 28 when the door is closed, as shown in Fig. 1. This latch has a rear extension or tail 39 which extends backwardly toward the car. This latch may be provided on the upper side of its tail with a projection 40, the top 41 of the projection 40 extending above the top 42 of the side 4. Conveniently secured by a chain 43 to the top of the pocket is a locking pin 44 having a top 45 with a flange 46. The door and latch are held in place by bolts engaging the knuckles.
In use the pockets are secured to the sides of the car at convenient location by the bolts 9, 10. The stakes are inserted as shown in Fig. 2, in the pocket, the bottom of the stakes being jammed between the inclined surfaces of the sides 3 and 4. Preferably the stake should be made as indicated in Fig. 2, that is to say, there is a notch 47 on the edge of the stake which is to ward the door 28. After the stake is in place, the door 28 is closed the bottom 30 of the door catching in the notch 47 of the stake and the latch 35 turns so that the lip 38 will catch over the edge of the door, and the locking pin 44 is dropped into place, as clearly set forth in Fig. 1, the flange 46 of the locking pin 44 resting on the projection 40 and the top 42 of the side 4 of the pocket. This securely locks the latch in place against any accidental jarring. When it is desired to withdraw the stake from the pocket, it is only necessary to remove the locking pin, when the tail of the catch may be swung close in toward the side 4, thus releasing the lip 38 from the door 28, and the latter may be swung as shown in Fig. 3, and the stake removed from the pocket.
In Figs. 5 and 6 is shown a modification of the device in which the device is made for the lightness of construct-ion in pressed steel or other suitable material. In this modification the main portion of the stake pocket is made of three pieces, the back plate 50 and the two side plates 51 and 52, the back plate and the side plates being secured together by bolts 10 which pass therethrough and secure the pocket to the car, the same as in the other form. These sides 51 and 52 have on the outside the ribs 53 and 54, two on each side. At their outer ends they have on the outside the vertical knuckles 55 and 56, having the interior hollow or bores 57 and 58, there being two such knuckles for each side. These knuckles at their middle have the swells or enlargements '59 and 60. The gate 61 is provided with three knuckles 62 which are placed in line with the knuckles 56 of the side 52, and the gate is held in place by the vertical bolt 63. The several knuckles have the notches corresponding to the notches of the form shown in Fig. 4. By .the bolt 64 there is secured on the end of the side ,51 the latch 65. This latch 65 has knuckles which are alined with the knuckles 55 at the end of the side 51, .the bolt- 64 passing through the several alined knuckles. The end 66 of the latch 65 is adapted to catch against the end 67 of the gate .61 and hold the gate closed, and the lug .68 at the free or outer end of the gate 61 catches over the end of side 51, keeping the sides 51 and 52 from separating, as shown in Fig. 5. The locking bolt 44 is used to hold this latch 65 in locked position the same as in the other form.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is, i
'1. A stake pocket provided with a hinged door, the sides of the pocket and-the inner fac Of the door both being inclined vertically, the tops of the sides and of the door being thinner than the bottoms.
2. A stake pocket provided with a hinged door and a hinged latch adapted to engage said door, the latch having a tail a a l oking pin adapted to fit between the tail of the latch and the side of the pocket.
3. A stake pocket open in front and provided on one side with a door hinged to such side, and on the other side with a latch hinged to that side, the latch adapted to hold the door locked, and having a tail provided with a projection on the top and a locking pin adapted to fit between the pro.-
jection .Of the tail of the latch the side of the po ke A take pock t open in t l n d PIO- ided on one si with a $1 9. hinge to s ch side and having a lug at its free or outer n apted to cat h ove the edge o t other side of the stakepocket, said stake P t eing p ovi d w th a lat h hin to the side over the edge of which the lug of the door is adapted to catch, the latch being adapted to hold the door locked, and having a tail provided with a projection on the top and a locking pin adapted t fit between the projection of the tail of the latch and the Side of the pocket.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
