This invention relates. to new and useful particularly to that type which are heavier than air and depend for their lifting capacity upon the reaction of air against inclined planes when the machine is propelled through the air.
The object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character ren-. dering t em comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efiicient in use and readily operated.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully a pear as the description proceeds, the novel eatures thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved air ship and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with the upper plane removed.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally a main frame comprising opposite end members 2 and 3 connected by horizontally disposed transverse members 4, while these end members 2and 3 are connected at their upper and lower edges by longitudinally 6X- tending rods or bars 5. The transverse con-' necting members 4' in the'opposite ends of the frame, together with the longitudinally extending rods 5 are covered by a suitable stationary plane 6, upon which are mounted the operating means, together with seats 7.
An engine 8 is suitably supported upon the lower portion of the frame 1, and is provided with means for driving a propeller shaft 9 upon the rearwardlyextending end of which is keyed or otherwise secured a propeller blade 10, which is adapted to drive the machine.
A vertically disposed rudder 11 mounted upon a vertical axis in suitable bearings 12, secured to one of the vertical rods in the secured to one of the adjacent vertical rods, over which passes a cable 1 1, one end of which is secured to the end of the rudder 11, while'the other end is secured to an arm .15, carried by a longitudinally and horizontally disposed shaft 16, mounted in a suitable bearing 17 secured to the frame 1 in any suitable manner, while the opposite end of the shaft 16, to whichthe arm 15 is secured is prodded with a hand wheel 18, whereby the said shaft 16 may be rotated soas to swing the arm 15 and move the rudder 11 for the purpose of steering the machine either to the right or left as desired. Upwardly extending standards 29 are' pivotally connected to the frame 1 and pivot-ally support at their outer extremities substantially rectangular curved frame 30, to which is secured an. upwardly convexed plane 31, to the opposite ends of which are secured cables 32, which pass over pulleys 33, secured to the lower portions of the end curved plane 31. will he tilted in order that it may assist the nun-lune to either ascend or descend.
From the foregoing disclosure taken in end member 2, While a suitable pulley 13 is connection with the accompanying drawing it will be manifest that a flying machine is,
provided for that will be very easily controlled, and that will fulfil all the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is':
1. In a flying machine the combination of a main frame, having cross bars ext-ending across the top at mid'length and at the ends thereof, propelling means mounted on the frame, a main plane secured to the lower portion of the frame, a movable'planc located above the main plane and supported by standards, each having one end oscillatably mounted'upon a cross bar of the main frame, and the other end similarly mounted upon a correspondingly situated cross bar of the movable plane, cables having their upper ends secured to the ends of the movable plane, the said cables being connected at their opposite ends to a controlling lev r mounted upon the frame for the purpose of swinging the movable plane and tilting the same, and balancing planes carried by the frame, substantially as set forth.
2. In a flying-machine the combination of a main frame, having cross bars extending across-the top at mid length and at each end thereof, propelling means mounted on the main frame, a main plane secured to the lower portion of the frame, a movable plane above the main plane and supported by standards, each having one end oscillatably mounted upon a cross bar of the main frame and the other endsimilarly mounteding machine, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a flying machine, the combination of a main frame, propelling means'mounted thereon, astationary plane secured to the lower end of the main frame, a movable plane secured to the upper end of the main frame, balancing means carried by the main frame, a. vertical rudder mounted to turn about a vertical axis, a rock shaft provided with a lateral arm, and cables producing an operative connection between the said arm and vertical rudder for turning the latter.
