Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1911.
Application filed August 24, 1908. Serial No. 449,916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY E. KELSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skirts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in skirts, petticoats and like garments, and especially to stock or ready made skirts.
The object of my invention is to provide a skirt or pettieoat which will give the wearer freedom of movement of the limbs without exposure.
Briefly stated, my invention consists in terminating the body of the skirt or pettieoat at or near the knees of the wearer and in providing at the bottom of said body a relatively deep fiounce made up of a plurality of independent and overlapping flaps distributed around the body and joined to the latter at their upper ends. This construction permits of having the body tight fitting while the overlapping flaps permit of great freedom of movement of the limbs below the knees and without distorting the shape of an outside side skirt and at the same time without exposure.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is an elevation of a skirt embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Having reference to the drawings, 1 represents the body of my improved skirt, 2 the waist band, 3 the flounce and 4 the placket.
As herein shown the body terminates near the knees of the wearer and is made with the relatively deep fiounce 3 consisting of a plurality of independent sections or flaps depending from the lower end of body 1, each of said sections overlapping those at each side of it. By this sectional arrangement the limbs of the wearer from the knees down have perfect freedom of movement, and at the same time the overlapped arrangement prevents their being exposed. This construction also permits of making the body 1 tightly fit the figure of the wearer while the flounce 3 gives the freedom of movement of limbs that heretofore has been possible only with loose fitting skirts.
What I claim is:
1. A skirt comprising a body portion terminating near the knees of the wearer and a flounce extending thence to the bottom, said flounee being rovided with a plurality of vertical covere openings to permit of freedom of movement of the limbs of the wearer.
2. A skirt comprising a body portion terminating near the knees of the wearer and a flounce comprising a plurality of independent depending flaps, each of said flaps overlapping its adjacent flaps and extending from the body portion to the bottom of the skirt.
