nnrrn sra THOMAS BODNAR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING BOX.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that 1, THOMAS BonNAR, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding boxes, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a folding box consisting of comparatively few parts that are easily and quickly collapsed or folded; second, to furnish a folding box with novel means for maintaining a rigid and durable structure; third, to provide a box that can be advantageously used for shipping various kinds of merchandise; fourth, to provide a box that will occupy a comparatively small space in storage or by return shipment, and fifth, to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is simple, inexpensive to manufacture, and free from injury by ordinary use.
With this understanding of my invention, reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing z-Figure 1 is a front elevation of the box, Fig. 2 is a vertical lon` gitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the box, Fig. t is an end view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the box showing the same in a collapsed and folded position.
A box in accordance with this invention comprises a bottom 1 having the longitudinal edges thereof beveled, as at 2. rllhe bottom 1 has the outer side thereof adjacent to the ends provided with transverse cleats 3 and the ends of these cleats are beveled, as at tin alinement with the beveled longitudinal edges of the bottom 1. Suitably secured to the outer side of each cleatV is a strap 5 extending from one end of the cleat to theopposite end thereof, and the ends of said straps are provided with barrels 6.
Pivotally connected to the barrels 6 at the rear ends of the straps 5 by a pin 7 are vertical straps 8 having the upper ends Specification of Letters Patent.

thereof provided with barrels similar to the barrels 6. The straps 8 are carried by cleats 9 mounted upon the outer side of the rear wall 10 adjacent to the ends thereof. The rear wall 10 has the longitudinal edges thereof beveled, as at 11, and the upper and lower ends of the cleats 9 are beveled in alinement with the beveled edges of the wall 10.
Pivotally connected to the outer ends of the straps S by detachable pins 12 are straps 13 carried by cleats 111 mounted upon the outer side of a lid or cover 15, said lid or cover having the longitudinal edges thereof beveled, as at 16. The cleats 141 are also beveled 'in alineinent with the beveled edges of the lid or Cover 15 and the forward ends o f Jthe straps 13 are provided with barrels similar to the straps 5 and 8.
Pivotally connected to the forward ends of the straps 13 by pins 17 are straps 18, carried by cleats 19 mounted upon the outer side of a front wall 20, said wall having the longitudinal edges thereof beveled to engage the forward beveled edges of the bottomL 1 and the lid or cover 15. The lower ends of the straps 18 are provided with barrels similar to the straps 5, 8 and 18 and are adapted to be connected to the forward ends of the straps 5 by detachable pins 21.
The inner side of the bottom 1, walls 10 and 20 and lid or cover 15, adjacent to the ends thereof are provided with grooves 22 and adapted to engage in said grooves are the edges of end walls 23, said end walls having the rear edges thereof hinged, as at 24; to the ends ofthe rear wall 9. The forward edges of the walls 23 have the inner sides thereof adjacent to the upper edges provided with pivoted hooks 25 adapted to engage in staples 26, carried by the inner side of the front wall 20 adjacent to the upper edge thereof. The front wall 20 has the inner lower edge hinged, as at 27 to the forward inner edge of the bottom 1. The end walls 23 have the outer sides adjacent to the edges thereof reinforcedby vertical bars 28 and transverse bars 29.
To fold the box, the pins 12 and 21 are withdrawn. The lid or cover 15 is folded rearwardly upon the outer side of the front wall 20. The hooks 25 are swung out of engagement with the staples 26 and then the rear wall is swung rearwardly suficiently to permit of the end walls 23 being folded upon the inner side of the rear wall 10. The rear wall l0 is then swung under the bottom l to engage the outer side thereof and then the front wall is folded upon the inner side of the bottom l, thereby providing a compact structure that can be easily handled and stored in a comparatively small space.
lt is thought that the manner of setting up the box will be understood without further description, and with the box made of strong and durable wood or metal, it will be noted that a rigid structure is provided in which various kinds of merchandise can be transported.
A boi; comprising a bottom having the longitudinal edges thereof beveled, cleats carried by the outer sides of said bottom adjacent to the ends thereof and provided with beveled ends, straps carried by said cleats7 a rear 'wall having the longitudinal edges thereof beveled, cleats carried by the outer side of said rear wall adjacent to the ends thereof and having the ends beveled in alineinent with the edges of the rear wall, straps carried by said cleats and pivotally connected to the rear ends of the straps of said bottom, a lid having the longitudinal edges thereof beveled, cleats carried by said lid adjacent to the ends thereof and having l the ends beveled in alinenient with the beveled edges of said lid, straps carried by said cleats and having the ends thereof detachably connected to the upper ends of the straps of said rear wall, a front wall having the longitudinal edges thereof beveled with the lower` edge thereof hinged to the inner forward edge of said bottom, cleats carried by the outer side of said front wall adjacent to the ends thereof and having the ends beveled in alinement with the beveled edges of said front wall, straps carried by said cleats and having the upper ends thereof pivotally connected to the forward ends of the straps of said lid and the lower ends thereof detachably connected to the forward ends of the straps of said bottom, end walls having the rear inner edges thereof hinged to the inner side of said rear wall and adapted to have the edges thereof engage in grooves provided therefor in said bottom, rear wall, lid and front wall, and means car ried by the inner sides of said end walls and adapted to connect said end walls to the inner side of said front wall adjacent to the upper edge thereof, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof yI affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
