To all whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, ERNEST E. YAXLEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Switches, being a division of my copending application, Serial No. 280,159, filed September 26, 1905, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication.
My invention relates to an improved combination of line-jack and indicator exhibited in the accompanying drawing and described in connection therewith and pointed out in the claims. The electro-magnet itself forms the subject matter of my original application Serial No. 280,159, filed September 26, 1905.
In the drawings, showing the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal view, mainly in section, of a struct-ure constructed in accordance with the preferred embodiment of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are views showing so much of the mechanism that appears in end view as is necessary to an understanding of the invention, Fig. 2 showing the fastening hooks in position, while Fig. 3 shows said hooks in an alternative position. Certain elements are omitted from Figs. 2 and 3 in order that certain novel features may more clearly appear. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the rear portion of the magnet structure, parts being broken away clearly to reveal certain details of construction..

The tubular shell a is desirably composed of magnetic material and is preferably cylindrical, as is desired in telephone practice.

As indicated most clearly in Fig. 4, the shell a is provided with the formation of a locking element, a bayonet slot Z being preferably formed in said shell to constitute such element. The spool is provided with a companion locking element, in this instance in the form of a pin m that is engaged with said bayonet slot first by longitudinally moving the spool f so that the pin m will pass through the portion of the bayonet slot that is longitudinal of the shell a, whereafter a turning movement of said spool toward the right will engage the said pin with the transverse portion of the bayonet slot. The pin m prevents withdrawal of the spool when in this position, which is shown in Fig. 4. In order to prevent the spool from rotating in the reverse direction, I provide one or two fastening devices, such as the elements n-o, that engage projections carried by the spool, such as the elements pg. The elements a-o are preferably in the form of hooks that are pivoted at 711-01, which pivotal places also constitute terminal attachments for the springs or contacts n2-02 of the jack r. The elements p-g are preferably in the form of screws that are carried in the metallic blocks p1-g1, constituting terminals of the winding of the magnet spool The hook or free ends of the elements a-o are adapted to be interposed between the heads of the clamping screws p-g, the hooks being placeable about the shank of the screws, whereafter said screws may be tightened down upon said hook ends, whereby the annunciator or indicator winding is placed in electrical connection with the jack and the line connected with the jack.
In the construction shown, the element o2 is a back contact that is separated from the spring o3 when a plug is thrust within the jack, the invention, however, not being limited to this precise arrangement of the jaclc and indicator winding. It will be seen that when the elements ln-o are thus placed in engagement with the screws p-g, that the spool cannot be rotated to withdraw the pin m from the engaging bayonet slot.
rl`he core g of the indicator is provided with an axial bore s, within which there is disposed a spring t, which spring is prefer'- ably a coiled spring and which projects beyond the core-element g to engage the armature b, to impose a load upon said armature suited to the strength of the magnet to secure the proper operation of the armature. The force of this spring is preferably made adjustable, to which end there is desirably included in the saine bore of the core a plunger l which may be advanced toward the spring by any suitable means, there being preferably employed a screw u in threaded engagement with a plug u inserted within the core (y, a spring-bushing 'to being preferably employed to secure the scr-ew in any position to which it has been adjusted. As this screw is forced in, it depresses the spring t, thereby increasing the load upon the armature b, making the structure better adapted to operate under the iniiuence of heavier currents, that is, for example, on shorter lilies. If the current in the winding is not strong enough to properly attract the armature Z; with a given adjustment of the spring t, the screw u may be withdrawn to an extent that will properly reduce the pressure of the spring upon said armature.
In my copending application Serial No. 280,159, filed September 2G, 1905, of which the present application is a division, and in this divisional application I have disclosed an annunciator magnet structure comprising a shell, a spool carrying a winding detachably secured within the shell, circuit terminals for the winding projecting from the rear spool head, pivoted connecting bars or hasps adapted to be turned into engagement with and secured to said terminals for operative purposes, to be detached therefrom and turned out of the path of the spool so as not to prevent or obstruct the removal thereof, the armature of the annunciator magnet being adjacent to the end of the spool opposite to the end carrying the said terminals, whereby the spool may be removed without disarranging the armature, and a springjack having contact elements in electrical connection with said connecting bars.
It will be seen that I have provided an electromagnet comprising a tubular magnetic shell, a spool carrying the winding detachably secured within the shell, circuit terminals for the Winding projecting from the spool-head out of the end of the shell, and pivoted connecting bars or hasps adapted to be turned up into engagement with and secured to said terminals, for operative purposes, to be detached therefrom and turned ont of the path of the spool so as not to prevent or obstruct the removal thereof.
\Vhile .l have herein shown and particularly described the pref-erred embodilnent of my invention, l do not wish to be limited to the precise construction shown, as it is obvious that changes therein may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but,
Ilaving thus described my invention, I claim new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent:
l. An electro-.magnet structure con'iprising a shell, a spool carrying a winding detachably secured within the shell, circuit terminals for the winding projecting from the rear spool head, and pivoted connecting bars or hasps adapted to be turned into engagement with and secured to said terminals for operative purposes, to be detached therefrom and turned out of the path of the spool so as not to prevent or obstruct the removal thereof, the armature of the electro-magnet being adjacent to the end of the spool opposite to the end carrying'the said terminals, whereby the spool may be removed without disarrai'iging the armature.
2. An annunciator magnet structure comprising a shell, a spool carrying a winding detachably secured within the shell, circuit terminals for the winding projecting from the rear spool head, pivoted connecting bars or hasps adapted to be turned into engagement with and secured to said terminals for operative purposes, to be detached therefrom and turned out of the path of the spool so not to prevent or obstruct the removal thereof, the armature of the annunciator magnet being adjacent to the end of the spool opposite to the end carrying the said terminals, whereby the spool may be removed without disarranging the armature, and a springjack having contact elements in electrical connection with said connecting bars.
An electro-magnet structure comprising a shell., a spool carrying a winding detachably secured within the shell, a circuit terminal for the winding projecting from the rear spool head, and a pivoted connecting bar or hasp adapted to be turned into engagement with and secured to said terminal for operative purposes, to be detached therefrom and turned out of the path of the spool so as not to prevent or obstruct the removal thereof, the armature of the electro-magnet being adjacent to the end of the spool opposite to the end carrying the said terminal whereby the spool may be removed without disarranging the armature.

An annuncator magnet structure comprising a shell, a spool carrying a winding detachably secured within the shell, a circuit terminal for the Winding projecting from llO the rear spool head, apivoted connecting bar or ha-sp adapted to be turned into engagement with and secured to said terminal for operative purposes, to be detached therefrom and turned out of the path of the spool so as not to prevent or obstruct the removal thereof, the armature of the annunciator magnet being adjacent to the end of the spool opposite to the end carrying the said terminal, whereby the spool may be removed without (.lisarranging the armature, and a springjaclt having contact elements in electrical connection with said connecting bar. l
5. An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said members being adapted for locking connection by rotation of the spool with respect to the shell, and a fastening device for preventingthe rotation of the spool with respect to the shell when the members of said locking device are engaged, in combination with a jack-switch, said fastening device servii'ig electrically to connect the electro-magnet and jack-switch. 6. An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable Within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said locking device being in the form of a bayonet catch, the bayonet slot being formed in the shell While the pin for engagement with said slot is carried upon the magnet spool, and a fastening device for preventing the rotation of the spool With respect to the shell when the members of said locking device are engaged, in combination with a jack-switch, said fastening device serving electrically to connect the electro-magnet and jack-switch. 7. An electromagnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said locking device being in the form of a bayonet catch, and a fastening device for preventing the rotation of the spool With respect to the shell When the members of said locking device are engaged, in combination With a jack-switch, said fastening device serving electrically to connect the electro-magnet and jack-switch. 8. An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable Within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said members being adapted for locking connection by rotation of the spool With respect to the shell, and a fastening device for preventing the rotation of the spool with respect to the shell when the members of said locking device are engaged, in combinatiol'i with a jack-switch, said fastening device serving electrically to connect the electro-magnet and jack-switch and being mounted upon the j ack-switch and in separable connection with the electro-magnet and being adapted to be swung out of line with the spool of the electro-magnet.
9. An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion eontainable within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion 'locking member provided upon the spool portion, said locking device being in the form of a bayonet catch, the bayonet slot being formed in the shell while the pin for engagement with said slot is carried upon the magnet spool, and a fastening device for preventing the rotation of the spool with respect to the shell when the members of said locking device are engaged, in combination with a jack-switch, said fastening device serving electrically to connect the electro-magnet and jack-switch and being mounted upon the jack-switch and in separable connection with the electromagnet and being adapted to be swung out of line with the spool of the electro-magnet.

An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said locling device being in the form of a bayonet catch, and a fastening device for preventing the rotation of the spool with respect to the shell when the members of said locking dcvice are engaged, in combination with a jack switch, said fastening device serving electrically to connect the electro-magnet and j ack-switch and being mounted upon the jack-switch and in separable connection with the electro-magnet and being adapted to be swung out of line with the spool of the electro-magnet.
11. An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell the spool With respect to the shell when the members of the aforesaid locking device are engaged.
12. Au electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable within tl i shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said locking device being in the form of a bayonet catch, the bayonet slot being formed in the shell While the pin for engagement With said slot is carried upon the magnet spool, and
y circuit terminals for the Winding projecting from the rear spool head, in combination with a jack-switch and pivoted connecting bars or hasps adapted to be turned into engagement with .and secured to said terminals and in electrical connection with contact elements of the jack-switch, said connecting bars or hasps acting as fastening mechanism for preventing the rotation of the spool with respect to the shell when the members of the aforesaid locking device are engaged.
13. An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable With- .in the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said locking device being in the form of a bayonet catch, and circuit terminals for the Winding projecting` from the rear spool head, in combination with a jack-switch and pivoted connecting bars or hasps adapted to bc turned into engagement with and secured to said terminals and in electrical connection with contact elements of the jack-switch, said connectin'g bars or hasps acting as fastening mechanism for preventing the rotation of the spool with respect to the shell When the members of the aforesaid locking device are engaged.
14. An electroanagnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable Within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said members being adapted for locking connection by rotation of the spool With respect to the shell, and circuit terminals for the Winding projecting from the rear spool head, in combination with a jack-switch and pivoted connecting bars or hasps electrically connecting said terminals and contact elements of the jack-switch and acting as fastening mechanism for preventing the rotation of the spool With respect to the shell When the members of said locking device are engaged.
15. An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable Within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided. upon the spool portion, said locking device being in the form of a bayonet catch, the bayonet slot being formed lin the shell while the pin for engagement with said slot is carried upon the magnet spool, and circuit terminals for the Winding projecting from the rear spool head, in combination with a jaclcswitch and pivoted connecting-bars or hasps electrically connecting said terminals and contact elements of the jack-switch and acting as fastening mechanism for preventing the rotation of the spo-ol With respect to the shell when the members of said locking device are engaged.
16. An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable Within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said locking device being in the form of a bayonet catch, and circuit terminals for the Winding projecting from the rear spool head, in combination With a jack-switch and pivoted connecting bars or hasps electrically connecting said terminals and contact elements of the jack-switch and acting as fastening mechanism for preventing the rotation of the spool with respect to the shell when the members of said locking device are engaged.

An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable Within thc shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said members being adapted for locking connection by rotation of the spool with respect to the shell, and a circuit terminal for the Winding projecting from the rear spool head, in combination With a jack-switch and a pivoted connecting bar or hasp adapted to be turned int-o engagement With and secured to said terminal and in electrical connection with a contact element of the jackssvvtch, said connecting bar or hasp acting as fastening mechanism for preventing the rotation of the spool with respect to the shell when the members of t-he aforesaid locking device are engaged.

An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable Within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said locking device being in the form of a bayonet catch, the bayonet slot being formed in the shell While the pin for engagement With said slot is carried upon the magnet spool, and a circuit terminal for the Winding projecting from the rear spool head, in combination With a jack-switch and a pivoted connecting bar or hasp adapted to be turned into engagement With and secured to said terminal and in electrical connection With a contact element of the jack-switch, said connecting bar or hasp acting as fastening mechanism for preventing the rotation of the spool With respect to the shell When the members of the aforesaid locking device are engaged.

An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable Within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said locking device being in the form of a bayonet catch, and a circuit terminal for the Winding projecting from the rear spool head, in combination with a jack-switch and a pivoted connecting bar or hasp adapted to be turned into engagement with and secured to said terminal and in electrical connection with a contact element of the jack-switch, said connectingl bar or hasp acting as fastening mechanism for preventing the rotation of the spool With respect to the shell When the members of the aforesaid locking device are engaged.

An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable Within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said members being adapted for locking connection by rotation of the spool With respect to the shell, and a circuit terminal for the Winding projecting from the rear spool head, in combination With a jack-switch and a pivoted connecting bar or hasp electrically connecting said terminal and a contact element of the ack-switch and acting as fastening mechanism for preventing the rotation of the spool With respect to the shell when the members of said locking device are engaged.

An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable Within the shell portion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said locking device being in the form of a bayonet catch, the bayonet slot being formed in the shell While the pin for engagement with said slot is carried upon the magnet spool, and a circuit terminal for the Winding projecting from the rear spool head, in combination with a jack-switch and a pivoted connecting bar or hasp electrically connecting said terminal and a contact element of the jackswitch and acting as fastening mechanism for preventing the rotation of the spool with respect to the shell when the members of said locking device are engaged.

An electro-magnet including a shell portion, the spool portion containable Within the shell po-rtion, a locking device having one locking member provided upon the shell portion and a companion locking member provided upon the spool portion, said locking device being in the form of a bayonet catch, and a circuit terminal for the Winding projecting from the rear spool head, in combination with a jack-switch and a pivoted connecting bar or hasp electrically connecting said terminal and a contact element of the jack-switch and acting as fastening mechanism for preventing the rotation of the spool With respect to the shell when the members of said locking device are engaged.

An electro-magnet structure comprising a shell, a spool carrying a Winding detachably secured Within the shell, a jacksWitch, and means for electrically connecting the ack-switch with the electro-magnet, said means serving detachably to connect the electro-magnet and the jack-switch and being located at the end of the structure opposite to that end Where the armature is disposed, so as to permit ready removal of the spool.
24. An electro-magnet structure comprising a shell, a spool carrying a Winding detachably secured Within the shell, a jacksvvitch, and means for electrically connecting the jack-switch with the electro-magnet, said means being mounted upon the jacksvvitch and in separable physical connection With the spool and being located at the rear of the structure opposite to that end Where the armature is disposed, so as to permit ready removal of the spool.
