To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. SoLEs,

a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the 'city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Locking Device for Telephones, of which the following is a full, clear, a-ndexaet description.

The object of the invention is to provide .a new and improved locking device for telephones, arranged to lock theswitch lever or supporting hook for the receiver in place to prevent unauthorized persons from making use otthe telephone. For the purpose mentioned use is made of a brace engaging the telephone support and the switch lever, and a lock for holding the brace against re moval from the'switch lever- A practical embodiment ofthe invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in

which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the lockmg device as applied to a fixed telephone;

The switch lever or supporting hook A for the locking defor the-telephone receiver is pivoted in'the usual manner on the casing B, to close and open the circuit on removing the telephonereceiver from the hook A or replacing it thereon, as is well known. the said brace abutting against the face of the casing B, so that the'switch 'lever A is held against swinging movement when taking the telephone receiver ofi' the fork A. Thus an unauthorized person cannot. make use of the telephone during the time the braceC is in position.

side arms O terminating in outwardly curved flanges C, fitting against the outside of the hook A straight portion A of the switch lever A, so that the brace C is held against longitudinal movement on the switch lever A.

- The lock D is 'referably in the form of a padlock, having its hasp extending through apertures in the lower portions of the side arms C, so that t-he hasp extends across the straight portion A of the switch lever A at the under side thereofy'and hence the brace C is held against removal from the switch lever A. I

The side arms C abut against the face of the casing B at opposite sides of the slot B, through. which extends the switch lever A, and by the arrangement described the brace C when'in position holds the switch lever A against circuit closing movement when "taking off the receiver. As -shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the brace E V is introduced between the stand F and the switch lever G, and in this case the brace E is formed of the side members E, connected with each other at thetop and front by plates E ,E to leave the lower portions of the side arms E free to straddle the switch lever G and permit of engaging the lower terminals of the side arms E" with the hasp of the lock H, to lock the brace E in position on the switch lever G. The plate E terminates in a 'doWnwardly-extending arm E, adapted to abut against the stand F in the rear of the arm G of the switch lever 'Gr, so that .the lat er cannot close when removing the lever .from the fork G of the switch lever G.

The locking device shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, and can be readily placed in position on the switch lever, to hold thesame against closon opposite sides of the ing movement when removing the telephone receiver-from the fork of the switch lever. Although I have shown the locking device illustrated'in Fig. 1, as applied to a fixed telephone, it is evident that this locking device may be used in a portable or desk telephone. i 1

Having thus describbd my inventlon, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent; g lpA locking device for telephones, comprising a brace for engagement with the telephone support and having apertured members extending on opposite sides of the switch lever, and a padlock having its hasp engaging the apertures of the said n'1em-- bers for holding the brace against removal from the switch lever.

2; A locking device for telephones, comprising a brace, having apertured members and adapted to be seated on the switch lever of the telephone intermediate the support-of the telephone and the hook of the switch lever with the apertured members extending on opposite sides of and below the switch lever, the brace being adapted to abut against "the face of the support, and a padlock having its hasp engaging the apertures of the said members for holding the brace against removal from the switch lever.

3. A locking device for telephones, com:

prising a brace having a top member and apertured side members, said brace being adapted to be seated'on a telephone switch lever with one end engaging the telephone support and its apertured side. members extending on opposite sides ofand below the switch' lever and connecting the side arms with each other, thesaid plate tern'iinating in :1 depending flange for engagement with the-lower ends of the said side arms and extending under the switch lever.
