Description

D.` MLANDERSON.
' Veloci pede Sleigh.
No. 98,657, Patented Jany .11, 1870.-
W/r/vefsssjs."
Cihtbr @Stabat we new.
Letters Patent N 98,657, dated January 11, 1870.
IMPRO'V'EMENT IN VELOCIPEDE-SLEIG-HS.
Thelchedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. M. ANDERSON, of Twinsburg, in the county oi' Summit, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Velocipede-4 Sleigh; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear', and exact description thereof, which will enable` others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference `being had to the accompanying draw ings, forming part of this speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in means for propelling and guiding slcighs by the rider, and consists in the application of a spike-wheel, foot-crank shaft, drivingwheels and belts for propelling, and gniding-shoes, under an improved arrangement, whereby the rider may propel -the spike-wheel with his foot,
and thereby drilwthe sleigh along on the ice or snow,
and guide it at the same time with his hands.
Figurel is a-side elevation of my improved sleigh, and
Figure 2 is a plan'of't-he bottom of the same. vSimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. y
A is a spike-wheel, mounted on a shaft, B,ljour naled in boxes C, supported on vertical posts Dffixed to the front of` the turned-up part of the runners, so that the boxes may rise and fall on the posts, which have. spiral springs E, above and below the boxes, to aid them in changing position, so that the wheel may always bear on the surface of the snow 0r ice, although it may be irregular.
F is a double-cranked driving-shaft, arranged in front of the rider, near the bottom of the box, and provided with one or more belt-drums 0r pulleys, G.
H `are correspomling pulleys on the shaft B, preferably one on euch side of the wheel; and I represents belts working from 4the drums G, over the pulleys H.
The crank-shaft and drivingfpulleys are so arranged relatively to the seat, that the operator may, While sitting thereon, turn the cranks with his feet, to propel the sleigh, which will be drawn along by the spikewheel engaging the ice while being revolved.
For steering the sleigh, l have provided two small runners, K, and suspending-rods L, to which they are jointed, and passing down'through the box from near the scat, one on cach side, to be taken in the hands, to direct the said runners, (which are arranged oblique ly to the runners of the sleigh,) by pressing them down on the ice.
The said runners are connected,-by links M, to the beamsl or knees of the sleigh to be drawn by" it, 'when pressed down upon the ice.
The rods L are provided with springs N, for raising them and the shoes o the ground, when required.
The left shoe, when pressed down upon the ground, will turn thc sleigh to the right, and the. other will Y turn it to the left.
Having 4thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A velocipede-sleigh, Whose driving spike-wheel is arranged on spring-bearings in front thereo, and operated by a belt from. a crank-shaft, near the seat of the driver, in the manner described.
2. A sleigh, constructed with a seat for the driver at the back, a spring guiding-device on each side, a.
foot-crank, near the seat, and a spike driving-wheel inv front, actuated by a belt from the crank-shaft, all said devices being arranged, with respect tol each other, in Y the mannerset forth.
1). M. ANDERSON.
