SIGNAL-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAN J. Kavanaorr and CLAUDE P. QUEEN, citizens of the United States, residing at New Mart-insville, in the county of W'etzel and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signal-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in signal locks of that class which will indicate on the outside of a room wall, partition or the like the condition of a lock arranged on the inside of the structure.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which will be strong and durable in use, comparatively inexpensive to construct and mount, and not liable to get out of order when roughly handled.
ith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1. is a view illustrating the appli- *ation of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view of the principal parts of the lock showing the cover plate of the casing removed; Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical and horizontal sectional views; Fig. 5 is a detail view of the signal or indicating device; and Fig. 6 is a detail view of the keeper for the locking lever.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 denotes a portion of a wall, partition, or other structure having a door opening closed by a swinging door 2. The improved lock is adapted to fasten the door in its closed position and to actuate indicating or signaling means which will enable any one on the outside of a door to know whether or not it is locked, the locking means being on the inside.
The invention comprises a casing 3 closed by a removable cover plate 4 and secured to the structure 1 adjacent to the door opening. In the upper corner of the casing 8 is an angular slot 5 through which swings a locking lever 6 adapted to engage a keeper 7 and provided on its free end with a suitable handle 8. The keeper 7 is in the form of an angular arm arranged on an attaching plate 9 secured to the inner face of the door 2 and in order to retain the lever in its locking position after it has been swung downwardly into the keeper, an angular spring 10 is arranged within said angular arm of the keeper. This spring has its lower end riveted or otherwise secured in the bottom part of the keeper and its curved upstanding portion is adapted to bear against the lever (i and has its upper extremity projecting into a slot 11 in the keeper arm 7 whereby the lever will be prevented from dropping between said spring and the keeper arm.
The lever 6 has its intermediate portion fixed to a transverse pivot or shaft 12 1o tatably mounted in bearings13 within the casing, one end of said shaft 12 being squared or having flat faces 14 adapted to receive a removable key 15 which may be inserted through a key hole in the all or structure 1 from the outside, whereby the lever 6 may be actuated from the outside of the door to lock or unlock the latter. The inner end of the lever is enlarged and curved longitudinally and in this enlargement is an arcuate slot 16 which receives a pin 17 arranged in the bifurcated lower end 18 of a reciprocatory bar 19. The latter extends vertically and is mounted in a tubular support and guide 20 which rises from the top of the casing 3, and upon the projecting upper end of said bar 19 is provided a longitudinally extending rack'21 which meshes with a cog gear or pinion fixed to one end of a shaft 23. This shaft is mounted in a bearing 24: with which a plate 24 is provided. The said plate has a guide 2 1" for the bar 19, and the said guide also forms a bearing for said shaft. Said plate is secured by means of suitable screws on the partition wall or other structure 1. On the outer end of the said shaft is a sign plate 25 or any signal ing or indicating device which will show the position of the lock lever 6. As illustrated, the sign or indicator 25 is in the form of a circular plate and has on one side the word Locked and this side is turned into view when the lever 6 is swung to its locked posi tion in engagement with the keeper 7.
In operation, it will be seen that the lever 6 serves as a locking bolt or latch and that its slotted inner end acts as a cam to raise or lower the rod or bar 19. \Vhen the handle end of the lever G is swung downwardly the rack bar 19 is elevated to turn the shaft 23 through an arc sutlicient to bring the word Locked on the sign or signal 25 into view, and when said lever is swung to nnfasten the door the rack bar 19 is drawn downwardly and will restore the sign or signal to such position which will indicate that the door is unlocked.
\Vhile we have shown and described in de tail the preferred embodiment of our invention, it will be understood that we do not wish to be limited to the precise construction set forth since various changes in the form, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
The combination of a lock casing having a vertical slot in one side and provided on its outer side with a tubular guide, a latch member fulcrnmed in the lock casing, operating in and projecting outwardly through the said slot, and further provided at a point within the casing with a slot; a bar movable in the said tubular guide, said bar having a rack at its upper end, a pin connecting the lower end of said bar to said latch member, and operating in the slot of said latch, a keeper in which the outer portion of said latch member operates, said keeper having a bowed spring projecting into the path of said latch member, and serving to lock the same when raised, and when lowered, a. plate having a guide for said rack bar, said plate and said guide being provided with bearing and a shaft mounted in said bearin and also provided with a gear, the said gear engaging the said rack.
