ROTARY VALVE.
Application filed September 3, 1909.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I. CHARLES H. Haiutuvs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derby, in the county of Sedgwick, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in valves and has special reference to rotary valves. 7
The object of the invention to provide a simple and etlicient rotary valve which can be easily opened or closed without being thrown from its seat, and in which the use of packing is entirely dispensed with.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction adapted to vent to the atmosphere when said valve is adjusted to closed position.
ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several "iews and in which,

Referring to the drawing 1 indicates a valve casing provided with the usual. intake and discharge openings 2 and 3 respectively, said openings each being threaded for the reception of the threaded ends of intake and discharge pipes respectively. The casing 1 is provided with an internal threaded de pending annular portion opening into the interior of said casing to permit the ready assembling of the valve. A threaded head closes the opening into the interior of the casing 1 formed by the annular depending portion 1; engagcn'ientbetween the annular portion 4- and the head 5 being had by exterior threads on the head 5 which interlock with the internal threads on the annular portion 1. casing 1 into intake and discharge chambers A and B respectively, said partition being provided with a horizontal portion 7 lying approxiniately parallel to the l(.)ngitudinal axis of the casing l. The horizontal portion T of said partition is provided centrally with an aperture 8 for the reception of the shaft 9 and is further provided with the ports 10 and 11 circumscribingly disposed with relation to the aperture 8. An enlarged portion 12 is formed on the upper face of the horizontal portion 7 of the partition 6 which is provided with a horizontally disposed bore 13 terminating with a down 'ard extension 1-1- at its inner end which passes through the portion 7 of the partition of the casing 1 which also has an aperture 15 therein formed by a continuation of the horizontal bore 13, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. A rotatable disk 17 is provided centrally with a squared recess 18 for the reception of the squared end 19 of the shaft 9, whereby a rotation of said shaft through the medium of the handle 20 will rotate the disk 17. Said disk 17 is provided centrally with an enlarged portion 16 so that the recess 18 may be made of sntlicient depth to furnish the proper bearing for the squared end 15) of the shaft 9. Ports 21 and 22 shaped and disposed in the manner similar to the ports 10 and 11 are provided in the disk 17 so that when the shaft 9 is rotated to a position to open the valve the ports 10 and 11 will register with the ports and 92 re spcctively and open communication between the intake and discharge chambers of the valve.
In order to drain the discharge end of the valve when same is closed a circumscribing slot 23 is formed in the upper face of the disk 17 and so disposed that when the ports 10 and 11 are thrown out of registration with the ports 21 and 22 and the valve closed one end of said slot will open into the vertical bore ll and the other end into the port 11 thereby forming a by-pass connecting the interior of the discharge chamber 13 with the atn'iosphere through the aperture through the port 11, slot 28 bore 14, bore 13 and aperture 1.3. It will be noted, however. that when the valve is open and the ports 10 and 11 are in registration with the ports 21 and 22 respectively the slot 23 lies wholly without the port 11 and consequently communicatitm with the chamber l3 in the manner just described cut ofii.
The casing l is provided with the upwardly extending cylindrical portion Zet centrally thereof which forms a bearing for the shaft 9. The portion Qet is provided on its cylindrical surface with the laterally extending lugs 2G, while the handle 21 is provided with the depending finger 27 which is adapted during rotation of the shaft 9 to contact with the projection 25 to limit the movement of the handle in one direction to open the valve and with the pro jection 26 to limit the movement of the handle in the other direction to close the Valve.
By mounting the disk 17 on the intake side of the partition (3 the pressure from the supply source will press said disk firmly against the horizontal portion 7 of the partition and produce an exceedingly tight fit between the horizontal portion 7 and the upper face of the disk 17, thereby permitting the use of packing to be dispensed with.
While I have described and shown one particular form of the invention it will he noted that various changes may be resorted to in the details of construction without departing from the scope and spirit thereof.
With the foregoing construction it will be'noted that not only is the specific drain arrangement different from anything shown in the references but that the drain housing is located at the far side of the Wilve stem from the outlet connection of the valve casing so that it interferes in a minimum degree with the flow of water through the valve.
V hat is claimed is 1. A valve comprising a cylindrical casing having a transverse partition, inlet and outlet connections for the casing communieating therewith at opposite sides of the transverse partition said partition having service ports and a drain port therethrough and having at the outlet side of the partition a housing lying along the partition and leading from the drain port exteriorly of the casing, and means for covering and uncovering the service and drain ports of the partition interchangeably.
2. A valve comprising a cylindrical casing having a transverse partition, inlet and outlet connections communicating with the casing at opposite sides of the partition said partition having service and drain ports therethrough, a disk disposed against the inlet side of the partition and having ports arranged to cover and uncover the service and drain ports of the partition interchangeably, a stem for the disk passed through the partition and through and from he casing at. the outlet side of the partition and having means for oscillating it, and a housing lying along the partition between the stem and the side of the casing remote from the outlet connection and leading from the drain port exteriorly of the casing.
