SWITCH-OPERATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 15, 1910. Serial No. 555,690.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Losi-r O. HARBAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Piqua, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch-Operating Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in switch operating devices and is designed to be used in connection with the construction shown in my pending application, Serial No. 543,172, filed February 10, 1910.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby the switch may be shifted by a car traveling on either the main track or on the side track.
With this object in view, my invention consists in the construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawingFigure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a main. and switch track, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View of the cam plate carried by the car or engine for throwing the switch. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the central part of the switch throwing mechanism, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the parts shown in Fig. 3.
1 represents the main track and 2 the side track. The governing devices are located one on the plate 3 on the side track, and the other on a plate 4 on the main track. These are connected together by mechanism located on the plate 5, secured to the ties or any suitable support, and which will be hereinafter described. In the plate t is mounted a turn-table 6, of any desirable construc tion, which is operated by the engagement of a cam plate with one of the pins 7 pro jecting upwardly therefrom. Similarly, on the switch track is located a turn-table 6 provided with operating pins 7.
Referring especially to Figs. 3 and l, the plate 5 is provided with an upwardly projecting portion 8, having a central stud 9, on which is mounted a recessed boss 10 of the gear wheel 11. This gear wheel may be approximately circular, as shown in Fig. 1, or of the shape shown in Fig. 3, as it is not intended that it shall make a complete revolution. The gear wheel 11 is provided with a downwardly projecting rim 12, having gear teeth 13 on its interior. Passing through a thickened portion of the plate 5, which serves as a bearing, is a rod 14, carry- I ing on its upper end a gear wheel 15, which engages the gear teeth 13. This rod is provided with a crank 16 at its lower end, which is pivoted to an arm 17, which is connected to the rod 18, to which the switch points are fastened.
, 19 represents a movable lever, pivoted at 20 to a stud on the top of the wheel 11. One end of this lever is pivoted to an arm or link 21, which in turn is pivoted to the end of a lever 22, said lever 22 being pivoted at 23 to a bearing on the under side of the plate 41. This lever has a forked end, which engages with an eccentric 2%, located under neath the turn-table 6 and about centrally thereof. Similarly, the other end of the lever 19 is pivoted to an arm or link 25, the other end of which is pivoted to a lever 26, mounted on a pivot 27 on the under side of the plate 3. The lever 26 has a forked end, which engages with an eccentric 28 on the under side of. the turn-table 6 the connections from the lever 19 to the plates 3 and at being substantially similar.
29 represents a plate carried by the ear or locomotive and. having on its under side a grooved curved cam 30, adapted to engage with the pin 7 or 7*. This plate may be lifted or lowered by the engineer or con ductor.
The operation is as follows z Supposing that a train is coming from left to right on Fig. 1 and it is desired to shunt it ott onto the side track, the turn-tables 6 and 6 being locked, by means such as shown in my former application No. 543,172, filed Feb. 10, 1910, the conductor or engineer depresses the cam plate 29, and as the car or engine moves along. the pin 7 engages the groove in the cam 30. The cam moves the turn-table G one-half of a revolution, throwing the link 22 from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 to that shown in dotted lines. This pulls the link 21 and moves the lever or arm 19, the other end of the lever being firmly held at the end of the link 25, and turning the gear wheel 11 a part of a revolution, which, by the connections already described, shifts the bar 18, carrying the switch points, so as to open or close the switch, as i desired. The operation is similar if a train is coming along the switch track, and the conductor or engineer depresses the cam 30. It should be noted that the arm or lever 19 is locked at one end while being operated from the other, so as to produce the proper efiect upon the bar 18.
I claim z- 1. In a switch operating device, the combination of a turn-table located on the main track, a turn-table located on a side track, both of said turn-tables being adapted to be operated as a car or engine passes over them, each of said turn-tables being provided with an eccentric, a pivoted lever operated by each of said eccentrics, a main gear wheel, a lever pivotally attached thereto, links connecting the ends of said first named two levers with said last named lever, and connections whereby the movement of said gear wheel operates the switch points, substantially as described.
2. In a switch operating device, the combination of a rotary tin'n-table located on the main track, a similar turn-table located on a side track, said turn-tables being adapted to be operated at will by the passage of a car or engine thereover and each of said turn-tables being provided with an eccen tric, pivoted levers having forked ends, engaging said eccentrics, respectively, a main gear wheel, a lever pivoted on said gear wheel, links connecting the ends of said first named lever with the ends of said last named lever, respectively, a gear pinion operated by said gear wheel, and a crank and connections operated by said pinion for shifting the switch points, substantially as described.
