To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. FRENCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingston, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pneumatic Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to hammers operated by fluid pressure, and is intended more especially for service in cutting rivets and bolts in railroad and bridge work and analogus operations requiring quick heavy blows.
The ObJBCt ot the invention is to provlde a simply constructed and operated hammer which may be easily directed to the work and will deliver the sharp heavy blow required.
The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction andv arrangement by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show the invention as it has been carried out in practice, for cutting oil the heads of rivets in railway repair work.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the hammer mounted upon a car or truck. Fig. 2 is a corresponding side elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section, partly in elevation with a portion broken away. the section being through the center of the yoke.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
As adapted for railway work. a truck or car A is employed mounted on wheels A running on the rails A and provided with transverse ays A A on which travels a carriage B moving along the ways as re quired by a screw C held against axial movement and engaged in a nut, soon to be described, beneath the carriage. The screw is rotated by a crank C on an inclined shaft C through the medium of beveled gears C G on the shaft and screw.

which the cylinder may be turned to the desired vertical angle; the pivotal connection of the yoke to the carriage provides the re quired horizontal swing, and by moving the carriage on its ways the cylinder may be pointed in any direction within its range.
The yoke C comprises the substantially parallel vertical portions in which the trunnions are mounted and the horizontal portion through which passes the pivot c, the lower end oi which is passed through the top member of the carriage B and this latter has the depending portion 7) which. is threaded and constitutes a nut in which the screw C is engaged.
L is a motor having a shaft L carrying on each of its overhung ends a sheave or narrow drum L around which are taken one or more turns of a cable N. secured at its ends. By rotating the shaft in one direction or the other the car A on which the motor is mounted may be moved. along the rails A as the work progresses. I claim In a hammer of the character set forth, atruck, ways thereon disposed transversely of the truck. a carriage movable on said ways, a pivotally mounted yoke, a. vertical pivot therefor carried by said carriage and on which it is free to swivel, said yoke having bearings, a ram cylinder having trunnions mounted in said bearings, means for moving the carriage transversely of the truck, and means on the truck for moving the same in the direction of its length.
