MEGAPHONE.

T o all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK B. CATHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grafton, in the county of Taylor and State of IVest Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Megaphones, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to megaphones, the principal object of the invention being to provide in connection with the ordinary megaphone a signaling device connected with the megaphone and adapted to be used in conjunction therewith for primarily signaling one or more persons at a distance preparatory to communicating with such person or persons with the aid of the megaphone.

lVith the above general object in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.

In the accompzmying drawings Figure l is a plan view of a megaphone with the signaling device combined therewith. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the signaling device in its preferred form, shown detached from the megaphone proper.

Referring to the drawings, l designates the mouth piece of a megaphone and 2 the cone or, as it is sometimes termed, the horn. The mouth piece l, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, is cylindrical in form as shown in Figs. l and 2, the inner smaller end of the cone 2 being permanently attached to the mouth piece in any convenient way.

In carrying out the present invention, the mouth piece 1 is provided at diametrically opposite points with slots 3 extended lengthwise thereof and receiving the oppositely eX- tending arms l of the holder of the signaling device, the said arms projecting outwardly through the slots 3 and being provided at their outer extremities with broad flat finger pieces 5 adapted to be grasped between the lingers of the hand for the purpose of moving the arms 4 back and forth in the slots 3, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. The holder comprises, in addition to the arms 4, a centrally Specification of Letters Patent.

arranged sleeve G in which is held a reed pipe 7 containing a reed or vibrator 8 similar to that used in an ordinary horn or whistle. Embracing the outer end of the reed pipe and also inclosing the reed is a tubular mouth piece 9 which is movable with the reed and the pipe containing the same, all of said parts being movable with the holder as it is slid lengthwise of the main mouth piece l of the megaphone.

The construction described enables the mouth piece 9 of the signaling device to be advanced and projected beyond the mouth piece of the megaplione, as illustrated in F ig. 1, so that the operator may take said mouth piece 9 between 'the lips and blow the blast by means of the signaling device. Then, by means of the linger pieces 5, he may slide the signaling device backward within the main mouth piece 1 so as to render it practical to articulate, the internally arranged signaling device being1 considerably smaller than the internal dimensions of the mouth piece l so as not to interfere with the carrying of the voice.

Having described the invention, I claim :n l. The combination with a megaphone including a mouth piece, of a signaling device arranged within tlie mouth piece, and arms slidably connecting the signaling device and mouth piece, the connection between the arms and mouth piece permitting the movement of the signaling device to a position partly beyond the free end of the mouth piece to permit the sounding of the signal or the adjustment of the signaling device to a position wholly within the mouth piece to provide for the use of the megaphone independent of the signaling device.

2. The combination with a megaphone including a mouth piece, of an audible signaling device arranged within the mouth piece, arms projecting from the signaling device, said mouth piece being formed with slots to slidably receive the terminals of the arms, whereby the signaling device may when the arms are at one limit of the slot-s be partly projected beyond the free end of the mouth piece and when the arms are at the opposite limits of the slots arranged wholly within the mouth piece.

3. The combination with a megaphone including a mouth piece, of an audible signal ing device arranged Within the mouth piece, arms projecting from l[he signaling device, said mouth piece beingformed with slots to slidably receive the terminals of the. arms, and a finger piece carried by the terminal of each arm beyond and bearing upon Jthe outer surface of the mouth piece, whereby the signaling device may be longitudinally adjusted Within the mouth piece. 10
