WILLIAM HOLDEN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
FLOOR-SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 7, 1911.
Application filed November 29, 1910, Serial No. 594,722.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVILLIAM HOLDEN, a subject of King George of England, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor- Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to floor scrapers, and particularly to that class thereof'having a body mounted on wheels with a handle to operate the same, and a weight on the body to give the necessary pressure on the scraping blade.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for supporting and holding the weight on the body, and also to provide improved means for adjusting the handle in order to suit different operators.
The machine is operated by pulling it toward the operator, being provided at its front end with a knife which scrapes the floor as the device is pulled backwardly thereon.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a top view, parts being removed. Fig. 3 is a front view. Fig. 1 is a detail showing the roller which supports the handle.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 11 indicates the side pieces of a lower frame or body which carries a knife 12 bolted to a cross piece at the front thereof.
13 indicate two opposite side plates which rest on the top of the side pieces 11 and are secured by pins 14 to extensions 15 of said side pieces.
16 indicates a weight which fits between the side plates 13 and which has a bottom part or extension 17 which fits between the pieces 15, and at each side of the bottom part 17 the weight has lugs 18 which it in notches 19 in the pieces 15, this construction being for the purpose of preventing the weight from sliding or shifting off of the lower frame. The weight is further fastened in place by a pair of cam levers 34E pivoted at 35 to the side plates 13 and adapted when swung down to clamp the cams against the frame on which it rests. The weight has a handle 20, by means of which it may be lifted off when the cams are released.
The frame 11 is mounted on wheels 21,
and the side plates of said frame are connected by a rear cross piece 22 to which a handle section 23 is fixed The shank 2i of the handle proper is adjustably connected to the piece 23 by means of a pair of side bars 25 attached by bolts 26, a series of bolt holes being provided so that the handle may be lengthened or shortened as desired.
For supporting the handle I provide a wheel or wheels 27 carried by forks at the lower end of a stem 28 which has a threaded bore. This stem is slidable up and down in a guide hole formed in the lower member of a frame 29 which is fastened to the bars 25 by bolts 30. A screw 31 is mounted in this frame and screws into the threaded bore of the stem 28, the handle of the screw being provided with a cross pin 32 by means of which it may be turned, said screw extending at the upper end through a hole in the top of the frame 29, and being provided with a nut 33 which serves as a shoulder under the top of the frame to hold the screw in place. As stated the screw is free to turn, and when turned the stem 28 and the wheels carried thereby are raised or lowered. This adjustment is decidedly advantageous in use and enables the handle to be adjusted to the height of the operator so as to bring the handle in convenient position for pulling the same across the floor with the blade 12 in scraping contact therewith. For most effective operation it is desirable that a practically direct line of pull be provided and the proper relation of the blade to the floor is assured by adjustment of the blade 12 up or down, said adjustment being permitted by the slots 12 through which its attaching bolts extend. lVith a machine having a'handle at a fixed height, tall or short workmen would be more or less inconvenienced in pushing the machine back and forth, but by proper adj ustinent of the handle a proper line of push or pull is maintained irrespective of the height of the operator. The wheels 21 are so placed that by pressing down on the handle the weight is carried by the rear wheels 27 on the forward stroke, the handle being then lifted to shift the weight in front of the wheels 21 to press the knife in contact for the back or cutting stroke.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a floor scraper, in combination, a
wheeled frame, a blade at the front thereof, a handle rigidly connected to the rear end thereof, and a supporting wheel for the handle, connected thereto and adjustable to hold the blade in contact with the floor or allow rocking of the frame on the wheels thereof.
2. In a floor scraper, in combination, a movable frame provided with upwardly projecting side plates, a weight resting on said frame between said plates, and clamping devices between the plates and the weight,
. to hold the latter in position.
8. The combination with a wheeled scraper having an operating handle rigid therewith and projecting rearwardly therefrom, a wheel for supporting said handle,
and a screw operatively connecting said wheel and handle-, to adjust the position of the latter.
4. The combination with a wheeled scraper having a handle rigid therewith and projecting therefrom, a guide frame fastened to the handle, a stem slidable up and down in the frame and provided with a wheel for supporting the handle, and a screw connecting the handle and stem, to adjust the latter in the frame.
In testimony whereof, I do afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HOLDEN.
