COHERER.
I Specification olf L etters Patent.
Application tiled October 9, 1908. Serial No. 457,014.
Coherer, of which the following is a specifit-ation.
The object' ot' this invention is to prowith insulating material.
ride a new and improved coherer for. use in connection with wireless telegraphy and telephony.
ll'e have discovered that a contact between galena or sulfuret of lead and arsenical lcopper ore forms an extremely sensitive de-eohering coherer, which contact will instantly decohere when the electric wares or oscillations cease. y
A further object of the invention is to provide additionally a convenient adjusting nteelmnisnrfor this contact. y
This inirention is illustrated inthe aecompanying drawing, referring to which,
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of our ilnprovedf forni of eoherer; and F it'. 2 is a sectional plan view illustrating' the arrangenient of adjusting: devices.
Referring1r to the drawing and in detail A designates .an aerial, and B ay box in which the coherer is housed. The aerial A. is connected to a binding post 10 in the side of the box. The bqx isfals'ol provided with another post 11 which connects by a wire 12 o the ground G. The box is made of i1-on, and the binding posts are embedded The box has one ot' its sidesl hinged to the top so that the box canbe opened at the side for the purpose of adjustingr the action of the coherer.
-By housing the coherer in an iron box, the
salue is shielded fronrany oscillations, other than those which are directed .into the same through the. binding posts 10 and 11.
The coherer is made upv of a piece of galena ll arranged in Contact with a piece of arsenical copper ore 15.- This last. is 'found in nature and consists of chalcopyrite bornite and mispickle. These two corn.- pounds are kept in adjusted Contact, a convenient means for this purpose being illus" trated.
16--1Gudesignate two posts of insulating material secured to the bottom of the box B. t'ecured4 to the top of each of the insulating postsA 16-16 is a metallic arm 17, one ot'V which connects b a -wire to the bind; ing post 10, and the oter by a wire to the binding post. 11. A screw 18 having a head or knob 180 is threaded into each section 17. An arm 19'is arranged between each section 17 and the scr-ew head 1801 so as to turn thereon and to be` adjustable forward and. backward thereon. By this arrangement, each arm A19 can be turned and slid backward and forward on its" screw 18, and when in proper vadjusted position can be clamped in s uch position` by turning up the screw head 180 to cause' the saine to clamp the arm tightly. ends with a trough 20 for receiving the material which makes up one side of the ooherer. thev arm 19 to hold the material in the trough v20. By this arrangement the elements of the coherer can be accurately adjusted to get any desired pressure or contact.
A receiving circuit 22 is connected to the binding7 posts 10 and 11, which circ it may include atelephone receiver Tant` it de sired a battery E. e-
B v the arrangements described an etiieient fle-coherinpr coherer isA provided which can -have its contacteasily adjusted, and by housingY the saine in an iron receptacle the saine is shielded from extra oscillation, such as may emanate froin the sending apparte. tus or from other sources.
The details and arrangements herein shown and described may be greatly varied by a skilled mechanic without. departino' from the scope of our invention as expressed in the claims. y v
Having thus fully described 'our inven-` lach arnrl9- is provided at its' Aspring-arm 21vis also secured to tion, what we claim and desire to secure vby i sot our hands i-n the presence of Uve sul)- jscribi'ng witnesses. v A WILLIAM E. D. ,STOKE Jn.
