Description
c. E. POPE. COKE QUENGHING AND 00KB HANDLING APPARATUS. APPLICATION FILED DEC. 22, 1909.
. 984300. v A Patented Feb.21,l911.
I UNITED ums" PATEN 7 Fit} eo rn-o'onlvomne AND COKE-HANDLING! APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 22, 1909 Serial No. 534,451.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that/I, CHARLES E. Porn, a citizen. of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coke-Quenching and Coke-Handling Apparatus, of which the following is a specificat-ion accompanied by drawings.
This invention-in its most complete form comprises apparatus for quenching coke by spray .in a closed chamber and it avoids drenching and over saturation of the coke and at the same time obtains the bright, silvery appearance of bee-hive coke, and saves much labor and handling.
The invention in its preferred formis embodied in the apparatus described and claimed in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawing, which is a 1011- gitudinal elevation partly in section.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a coke ovenshown conventionally, and B is a pusher.
hot coke.
G represents a dock and D is a barge to which the quenched coke is to be delivered, although the coke could be delivered to cars instead of a barge.
-E represents a crane of any suitable form provided with the traveling carriage F.
The coke is handled and quenched in a carrier or receptacle G which may also be termed a, cradle, preferably of open-work construction and built of angle irons. This cradle maycarry'a full charge of ten tons of hot coke. The cradle or receptacle G is suspended from the carriage F as by means of the rope or chain H and'transported as desired.
J represents the quenching tank, which may be built of concrete or brick laid in Portland cement, with 'interior dimensions, sufficient to receive the cradle holding the As shown. the tank J is built partly above ground and partly under ground, but it could be built entirely under ground to suit other conditions around the plant. y i
The cradle may be of suitable shape, as
' for instance, square or rectangular, and the tank may be built to correspond. I
Means are provided within the'tank J for quenching the coke and in this 1 instance spray pipes K and L are shown, one part way down the height of the tank and the other arranged'abovc. There is preferably ii false b ttom 0 in the tank to hold the cradle. lVater is supplied to the spray pipes K and L from the pressure tank P or other suitable source. The water is introduced partway down the tank as shown. to thoroughly spray the bottom of the coke and the the coke in the cradle. A drain pipe Q car'- ries off the water preventing its accumulating to a depth sufiicient to reach the coke, as plainly shown.
- Means are provided forsubstantially inclosing the cradle full of coke within the tank as by means of the cover plate R connected to the spacing frame S for the conspacingframe and cover plate with the eradle and as the cover plate is lowered the chains U follow down into the tank and the cover fits over thetop of the tank and retains the steam necessary for quenching the coke, so that the bright silvery appear ance of bee-hive coke is obtained.
The cradle may be provided with a drop bottom of any suitable form illustrated in the form of doors V to deposit the coke-from vided for holding and releasing the doors V. f The guide pieces V placed atthe door of standing in front of the oven and the oven 'is being discharged. for by this means'loss' of coke is prevented.
In the operation of the apparatus a charge of coke is received by the cradle G and is then transported by the crane and the cradle and its charge placed in the tank J with the cover closed down. After the quenching is effected the cradle and its charge are raised and transported and the coke dumped into the barge D or placed upon a car. Other ears or vehicles Y may 'be provided on which the cradle may be removably mounted and transported.
According to this invention the bright silve'ry appearance of the coke is obtained, like oven in the liot state. This result alone is connection with by-product coke, as byproduct coke is black when it is quenched in the open air. v
If desired, the cradleitseltt and its contents could be dropped into thebarge, towed to its destination, and the cradle hoisted and deliveredinto the furnace-bin without any steam arising will quench the upper half of.
the oven A are used when the cradle G is.

necting chains T. The chains-U connect the the cradle and suitable means may be proa great improvement over the practice inhandling whatever. By this means large pieces of coke could be insured and practically all of the breeze now wasted would be avoided at-places where coke is handled in the usual manner.
I-claim and desire-to obtain by Letters Patent the following: I
1. In coke quenching apparatus, the combination of an open-work coke carrier or receptacle adapted to receive hotcoke, a quenching tank adapted to receive said receptacle, a cover for substantially inclosing the receptacle within the tank during quenching and substantially excluding air, and. means for transporting said coke receptacle to and'from said tank.
' 2.111 coke quenching apparatus, the combination of an, open-work coke carrier or receptacle adapted to receive hot coke, a quenching tank adapted to receive said receptacle, means for transporting said coke receptacle to and from said tank, said re. ceptacle being provided with a cover forclosing the said tank when receiving the receptacle. a
. 3.v In quenchin apparatus, a quenching chamber, a movab e carrier .01 receptacle provided with a cover for closing the chamber when receiving the receptacle, and means for jointly actuating the receptacle and the cover. a
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
