Tn: NORRIS Fznms cm, WASHINGTON, D. c.
HERMANN H. LOTT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
INTERCI-IANGEABLE HEAD FOR JEWELRY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN I-I. Lo'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Interchangeable Heads for Jewelry, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my invention, showing the same as a link cuif button; Fig. 2 is a rear elevational vlew o the same; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 33, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a vertical-sectional view on the line 4-4, Fig" 2, showing also, in dotted lines, the disengaging-tool, adapted to be used to disengage the link or body-portion of the button frm the head thereof; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the link or body-portion of the button shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of said disengaging-tool; Fig. 7 is a side elevational view of a stick-pin adapted to be interchangeably used with the head of said button when said head is to be used as the head of a stick-pin; and Fig. Sis a side elevational view of a button-portion adapted to be interchangeably used with the head of said button when said head is to be used as the head of an ordinary cuff-button.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in interchangeable heads for jewelry, the object being to provide an article of the kind described in which the head is adapted to be interchangeably used as the head of a link-cuff-button, stick-pin, or the like, the parts being easily manfactured and the article, in each instance, presenting a neat and attractive appearance.
Vith this object in view, my invention resides in the novel construction of the several parts thereof and in the novel arrangement and combination of the same, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, of the drawings, I have shown my invention as a link-cuffbutton and the same will be more particularly described herein in that connection; but it is to be understood that my invention might equally as well be shown and described as a stick-pin, ordinary cufi-button, or the like, the head of the button shown in said Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, being adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 9, 1909.
Patented Feb. 21, 1911. Serial No. 516,826.
be readily and interchangeably used as the head of either the link-body-portion shown in Fig. 5, the stick-pin-portion shown in Fig. 7, or the cuif-button-portion shown in Fig. 8. In the drawings, 1 indicates the head-portion of the cuff-button, this head-portion, as is usual, being perfectly hollow, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. On the back 2 of said head-portion is integrally mounted or otherwise secured a U-shaped frame 3 formed of side-ribs 4 and a connecting top-rib 5, the said ribs 4 and 5 being preferably under-cut, as at 6, to provide a slide or guide-way in which is adapted to removably slide a plate 7 mounted on the end of shank 8 of a linkportion 9, the side edges of said plate being correspondingly beveled, so that said plate, when in operative position, is adapted to snugly fit in said frame. l/Vithin the confines of said frame, the back 2 of said head-portion 1 is continuously slitted vertically and laterally, as at 10 and 11, see particularly Fig. 2, this slit being, as might be said, U-shaped, the portion of said back 2 embraced within said slits being adapted to form a spring 12. This spring-portion 12 is bent slightly outwardly, see particularlyFig. 4, the upper part thereof adjacent said lateral slit 11 lying normally out of the plane of said back 2, whereby said spring 12 is adapted to cooperate with said plate 7, as more fully hereinafter appearing, to retain the same in said frame and thereby firmly, but removably, hold said shank 8 in operative engagement with said head 1. The face of said plate 7 is partly obliquely cut-away or beveled, as at 13, see particularly Fig. 5, thereby providing a shoulder 14, against which shoulder the end of said spring 12 is adapted to contact when said shank 8 is in operative position, whereby said shank 8 and said head 1 are firmly and securely held in operative engagement, the flat port-ion of said plate 7, when said body-portion and head are in such operative engagement, being adapted to rest or bear smoothly upon said back 2, and the spring 12 being covered or hidden from view by said flat portion 15 of plate 7. It will also be seen that when the parts are in such operative engagement, the spring 12 cannot be depressed and the parts disengaged except by the use of a suitable tool. In order, therefore, that said shank 8 I may be readily disengaged from said headportion 1, I have preferably provided the tool 16 shown in Fig. 6. This tool 16 is provided at its forward end with 'a depending flange 17, and projecting outwardly from said flange at preferably the center thereof is a small stud or pin 18. This pin 18 is adapted to be inserted through a perforation 19 in the beveled portion 13 of plate 7 to depress said spring 12 out of engagement with said shoulder 14, whereupon said plate 7 may be readily removed from said frame 8, said fiat portion 15 of said plate 7 sliding smoothly on back 2 over said spring. The length of said pin 18 is substantially just equal to the thickness of said fiat portion 15 of plate 7, so that said spring 12 will not be depressed into said head-portion 1, but only depressed to a position flush with the plane of said back 2, thus preserving the resiliency of said spring, the edge of said flange 17 to each side of said pin 18 being adapted to bear upon said ribs 1 and to ride thereupon when said plate 7 is being removed from within said frame 3.
In Fig. 7 I have shown a stlck-p n-portion 20 provided with a plate 7f similar 1n all respects to said plate 7 and in Flg. 8 I have shown a button-portion 21 provided w1th a plate 7 also similar in all respects to said plate 7 and it will be evident that said head 1 may be readily and interchangeably used with either said stick-pin-portion 20 or button-portion 21 to provide a head therefor. It will also be obvious that said head 1 may be suitably ornamented, as desired, and may also be readily and interchangeably used to provide a head for the body-port1ons of other like articles of varying design.
From the above description, it will be seen that the said head may be easily engaged with and disengaged from the said several respective bodyportions, and that, when mounted on a said body-portion, the parts will be firmly and securely held in operative engagement.
I am aware that minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my invention might be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. I11 an article of the kind described, the combination with a head provided 011 its rear with a beveled guide-frame and an engaging spring within the confines of said frame, of a body portion provided with a beveled plate slida-bly fitting in said frame and having a shoulder on its face releasably engaged by said spring, said plate covering said spring and preventing the same from being accidentally disengaged from said shoulder; substantially as described.
2. In an article of the kind described, the combination with a head provided on its rear with a beveled guide-frame and an integral engaging spring within the confines of said frame, said spring normally projecting away from said head and being adapted to be depressed flush therewith, of a bodyportion provided with a beveled plate slidably fitting in said frame over said spring and having a shoulder on its face releasably engaged thereby, said plate being also provided with an opening to receive independent means adapted to depress said spring out of engagement with said shoulder; substantially as described.
3. In an article of the kind described, the combination with a head provided on its rear with a U-shaped beveled guide-frame and an integral engaging spring within the confines thereof, said spring normally projecting away from said head and being adapted to be depressed flush therewith, of a body-portion provided with a beveled plate slidably fitting in said frame over. said spring, the top face of said plate being partly obliquely inwardly cut-away and thereby provided with a shoulder adapted to be releasably engaged by said spring; substantially as described.
1. The combination with body-portions of articles of varying design as described, each of said body-portions being provided with a beveled engaging-plate, of a head-portion adapted to interchangeably provide a head for said respective body-portions, said headportion being provided with a beveled guideframe in which said engaging-plates of said respective body-portions are adapted to interchangeably fit and with a spring normally projecting rearwardly therefrom adapted to releasably engage with said respective engaging-plates to removably hold said head-portion in operative engagement with said respective body-portions and to be covered by said respective engagingplates when said head-portion is 1n opera-- tive engagement with said respective bodyportions; substantially as described.
5. The combination with body-portions of articles of varying design as described, each of said body-portions being provided with a beveled engaging-plate having a shoulder on its face, of a head-portion adapted to interchangeably provide a head for said respective body-portions, said head-portion being provided on its rear wit-h a beveled guide-frame in which said engaging-plates of said respective body-portions are adapted to interchangeably fit and with an integral spring normally projecting rearwardly therefrom within the confines of said frame adapted to releasably engage with said shoulder of said respective engaging-plates In testimony whereof, I have signed my to removably hold said head-portion in opname to this specification, in the presence of 10 erative engagement gvith said brespeitive tWo subscribing Witnesses.
body-portions and to e covered y saic respective engaging-plates When said head- HERMANN LOTT portion is in operative engagement With said Witnesses: respective body-portions; substantially as CAROLINE L. WEBER, described. GEORGE C. EIOI-IBAUM.
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent N 0. 981,682, granted February 21, 1911,
upon the application of HerniannH. Lott, of St. Louis, Missouri, for an improvement in Interchangeable Heads for Jewelry, an error appears in the printed specification requiring correction as follows: Page 1, line 61, the Word perfectly should read prefemtly; and that the said Letters Patent should he read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofiice.
Signed and sealed this 28th day of March, A. D., 1911.
