MAIL-POUCH-TRANSFERRING APPARATUS.
Spcification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 14, 1911.
Application filed July 7, 1910. Serial No. 570,741.
To all whom it may concern:
Ile it known that I, RAY S. Scorrano, a citizen ot the United States, and a resident ot' Lewiston, in the county oi Nez Perce and State of Idaho, have invented a new and Improved Mail-Iouch-Transterring i\pparatus, ot which the following is a .'tull, clear, and exact description.
l\'[ v invention relates to a mail pouch trans 't'erring apparatus, and it has 'tor its object to provide an apparatus which may be constructed at little expense., the apparatus being durable and certain in its operation.
The desired object. is attained by providing a yoke pivoted to a crane and a hook mounted on a car, the yoke being provided with means t'or holding it yieldingly in the direction ot' the tracks on which the car travels. The yoke is also provided with spring clasps 'for holding' in place a ring to which a mail pouch may be secured. The hook, which is provided for engaging the ring', has a spring for preventing the escape ot' the ring after it has been caught, The hook is secured to a pivoted rod, vielding means being provided tor holding the rod extended and against rotation.
Still other objects oitl the invention `will appear in the following complete description.
In this specit :ation I will describe a construction embodying a 't'orm oit' my invention. it being understood, however, that the scope ot the invention is defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part o't this specification. in which similar characters ot retereuce indicate correspomling parts in all the views, and in which- Figure l is a, perspective view showing a portion of the car and the crane in which my apparatus is mounted; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a side ot' the car, to which the yoke is pivoted, the hook being shown mounted on the crane: Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the hook, the rod on which it is mounted, the bearings for the rod and the .n1 `ans for holding the rod yieldingly in the, desired position; Fig. t is a side elevation ot the hook shown in Fig. 3. at'ter it has caught the ring to which the mail pouch is secured: Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5--5 oi Fig. 2; Fig. G is a sectional view through the rod on which the hook is mounted; looking toward the boss.' and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view ot the bracket on which the mail pouch is disposed.
ly referring to the drawings, it will be seen that a crane or support t3 is mounted on a base T, secured to the platform 8 at the side ot' the track, this crane or support G having cross arms t) and 1() disposed one above the other. 'l`o the crane t) is pivoted ou a vertical axis the yoke ll, said yoke having terminals l2 spaced t'rom each other. Spring clasps lil are secured to the terminals l2 respectively. A` bracket 11, on which the mail pouch 1*.) is disposed, is pivoted to the crane (i.
As best shown in Fig. 5 oit the drawings, the body ot the voke ll, between the terminals, is angular in cross section, a spring member llt being disposed across this angular portieri of the yoke 1.1, the terminals of the spring tt being secured to the cross arm 9. I pre't'cr to connect the yoke l1 pivotally with the crane by m aus oit the staples 15, one disposed above and the other below the spring lt. A ring member 16 is provided, the ring member lo having two loops 17, which are, adapted to be disposed on the terminals 1'2 of the `voke 11 and be held yields ingly in place by means of the spring clasps 12%, the ring member 1G also having a ring 1S, to which may be secured a mail pouch It). 'lhe door jambs Q0 ot a car 21. are provided with bearings, in which is disposed a rod Q3, the said rod being adapted to move longitudiimlly ot' the bearings 22 and being adapted also to rotate in said bearings. Secured to the rod QS there is a. hook 24;, having' a long loop and a terminal A spring 2G is secured to the rod Q3 and is adapted to press vieldingly against the terminal 25 of the elongated hook 9st. The rod Q3 also has a boss QT. a` spring 2S being wound on the rod QS between one oit' the bearings 22 and the boss 27, to hold the rod and the elongated hook Qet extended in the direction of the movement ol the ear. Secured t0 one of the door jambs Q0 is a bracket 29 having' an upper spring terminal :for engaging the bead 31 on the boss 27. v
In addition to mounting one o't' the yokes 'Il on the crane (i and one of the elongated hooks Q4 on the car 2l, I mount an elongated hook 24 on the cross arm 10 of the crane G nad a yoke ll on the side of the cai'. Tho
In using the invention, when the ring member 16 is carried by the yoke 11, pivoted to the crane 6 in the manner described, and a similar ring member 16 is mounted on the yoke 11 carried by the car. the ring member 1G carried by the. yoke 11, pivoted to the crane, will be caught by the elongated hook 24, mounted on the car, and the ring member 1G. carried by the yoke 11 pivoted to the car, will be caught by the elongated hooly 211; mounted on the cross arm 10 of the crane G. As the car approaches with its elongated hook open in the direction of its movement, the ring member 16 will be caught by the terminal 25 of the hook, the spring 26 being pressed back to permit the ring to pass. When the ring member 1G reaches the inner end of the terminal 25, there will be a strain on'the ring member 1, which will cause the yoke 11, to the terminals of which it has been secured, to rotate on its pivot and, at the same time, the rod 23 will be drawn against the pressure of its spring 28. ,Xs the yoke 11 is turned, the strain continues until the ring is pulled tree from the terminals 12. As the body of the yoke 11, between its terminals, is angular in cross section, the spring 111 will cause the yoke to continue to turn until. a new 'face of the angular portion ot the yoke is disposed tlat against the inner side of the spring, when the yoke will be held stationary out of the .line of travel. As the rod 23, with its boss 27, is moved against the pressure of the spring 2S, the boss 27, with its bead S1, will be drawn out. of contact with the flange on the upper spring terminal 30, and the rod 23 will be permitted to rotate until the weight ot the elongated hook, the ring member 1G and the mail pouch 19, are disposed immediately beneath the rod. 1n the same manner, the elongated hook 24 mounted on the cross arm 10 on the crane 6, catches the ring member 1G, mounted on the terminals 12 of the yoke 11 pivoted to the side of the car.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
