TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 14, 1911.
Application filed October 21, 1909. Serial No. 523,847. i
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. MCBIRNEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Type-Iriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
yThis invention relates to means for locking the shifting platen or carriage in a typewriti'ng machine in lower case p'osition and supporting it in upper case position, both functions being performed by a pivoted latch.
The invention is -an improvement.- upon the construction disclosed in Letters Patent to Edward B. Hess, No. 858,179 dated June 25, 1907. As in that patent, the invention is shown applied to the Royal Standard niachine manufactured by the Royal Typewriter Company.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a longitudinal section showing the carriage in vnormal or lower ease position; and Fig'. 2,- a like view showing it in elevated or upper case position.
The latch 1 that engages the bracket on a downward, extension 3 otI the shifting carriage has a hook d that locks the carriage in lowermost position. The means for shifting the carriages-i. e. links 4, 5,-operatc first to withdraw the latch and to then elevate the carriage as explained in the ahovc mentioned patent. In the present inven tion, the latch performs the further function of supporting or locking the carriage in ele- 'vated position and to this end it is formed with a rearwardly extending projection 1" which as the carriage is lifted passes under the bracket 2 and supports the carriage in elevated position. Since means of adjusting this latch may be desirable under some conditions provision for adjustment iS made atits pivot. This may be effected satisfactorily and conveniently by providing an eccentric adjustable pivot bolt (5. The mode of operation of the latch is clearly apparent from the drawing and further description 1s unnecessary.
I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a shifting plateny frame, a pivoted latch engaging it for locking it in lowermost position and also for supporting it in uppermost position, means for disengaging the latch to permit the platen to rise, for shifting the platen and for rengagin the latch to support lthe platen in shifte position. i
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a shifting platen frame, an adjustable latch engaging it for locking it in lowermost position and also `for supporting it. in uppermost position, means for disengaging the latch to permit the platen to rise, for shifting the platen and for rengaging the latch to support the platen in shifted position. l
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a shifting platen frame, a latch having an eccentric adjustable ivot and engaging the platen frame for loc zing it in lowermost position and also forsupporting it in uppermost position, means for disengaging the latch to permit the platen to rise, for shifting the platen and for rengaging the latch to support the platen in shifted position.
In testilnony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JAMES F. MCBIRNEY.
