TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. A
Patented Pel). 7, 1911.
To all ich/)m it may com-ern:
Be it known that l, Cani. G.-tnnnar.sox,.a citizen of the l'nited States. and residing at Syra-z-nre, (lnondaga county. State ol' New York, have invented certain new and useful E Improvements in 'llype-lVriting l\la'11iines,y of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates; to typcwriting niachines and more particularly to ease shifting Inechanisin for such machines, that is, mechanism for shifting the type relatively to the platen to etlect the printing ot upper or lower case type, and in :he following speeitleation the invention will be described as applied toa machine in which the segg-- nient carrying` the type hara` i shifted vertically. l v
It: will he understood that the invention is equally applicable. to inacliine=A in which the platen is shifted and that it is iunnaterial in which direction the shifting movement takes place. l
'The invention will he described in lconnection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l'is a plan View 'of the shifting key levers, their connections, and a sintlicient pnr Sectional elevation of the Shift levers at the let'tfside. of the machine allowingv the nient in its lower position; "5;5. 2l is a view similar to Fig. but4 partly hrolten away and showing' the segment. raised hy one. of the shift. levers; Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3, hut showing .the seffmenl raised hy the.
lino 5-5 of Fig. l; Fig. 6 iS a Section on the line tr-J of Fig.
Referring to the drawing, l indicates a Segment which is niovahlc in suitable. guide: in an up and down direction, "J type harA rock shaft having arms 4 which support the segment. Beneath the rock shaft are. two shift; keys 5, one ateach Side of the niarhiue for temporarily raising the segment. to print upper case letters and at. the left sident' the lnaehine there. is a third key lere-r tl which is adapted to raise the segna-nt :and lock it in its upper position, which lever is eonnnonly called a shift lock lever." The several in their upper positions hy prings S against a top it. llaeh nl the Shift levers 5 carrie an adjltahle piece or plate t). which plate is connected h v a link ll with an arni l of the rock .-hal`t Il. shown the plate l() i5 pivolally connected with the lever 5 at' lil and atljuntally connected with the lever hi' int-ans of a #crew ll pawing through a slot in the free end of the lever. The. upper ends. ofthe links llfhave pinandslot; connections l5' with the nl'nnlt l2 whieh'perlnitV the shalt to he rocked lijk tht` sliilt-loek'lerer t3 without disturbing the levers 5 and their connections. By means of the adjustable platea l0. the links ll may he properly adjusted with relation to the arnis l2 to avoid lost motion when the Shift. levers :'i are operated. lt will he seen that upon pressing either lof the shift lovers 5 the Segna-ntv will he. raised to print upper ease letters. 'llie :drift lock lever t is also provided with on(l ol the adjustable plates l() and connected hy a link l1 with one of the arms l2 of the rock shaft in the salne manner in which the shiftV leversare connected.
To etl'ect the locking of the segnnent in its upper pos ion the rock shaft. 3 in }no\'ided with a for ardly extending aria lt to which a dependinglatch li' is pirotallv connected. v
The latch l? has a shoulder lSwhieh rents upon an adjustable step 19 connected with the Shift lool: lever. when the latter is de- .p1-esseri, thus locking the lever down and the segment. up. 'lhe step 1t) is carried by a plate 20 which, as shown: is adjustably connected tothe shift lock lever in the manner in which the 'plates .10 are connectedto the shift levers.. A spring :'21 connected with the latch l? tends at all times to draw it into engagement with the step 1li.'
It; will he evident that upon depressing the shiftv lool: lever t3 the Segment will he raised, and automatically locked in its raised position h v the latch l?. l' provide for releasing the latch 17 on the step 1S) upon depresaing the adjacent. Shift lever 5 as follows:
. The latch is provided with an inclined. or
cam, surface. and the. lever 5 is provided with a laterally projerting pin or part 22; adapted to eoiij'ierate willi the incline '32 when the shit tlei'er is dept-eased. ly reference to Fig. `i it'l will he seen that when the segnient is locked in its upper position the pin or projection 23 lies directly over the incline 2Q.
Upon depressing the shift lever necting the ke)v lever with the arm of the i rock shaft, a latch connected with the rock shaft, and a step on said key lever with which the latch cooperates to lock the rock shaft. against movement when the kebv is depressed. 2. In a case shifting mechanism for typewriters, the combination` with a rock shaft having an arm, of a key lever, a link connecting the key lever with the arm of the rock shaft, a latch connected with the rock shaft, and a step on said key lever with i which the latch coperates to lock the rock shaft; against movement when the key is depressed, said step beinfcr adjustably connected with the key lever. A
3. Ix; a case shifting mechanism for typewriters, the combination with a roel shaft having an arm, of a key lever, a link connecting the ke)1 lever with the arm of the rock shaft, a latch connected with the rock shaft, a step on said keylever with which the latch coperates to'loek the reek shaft i against movement, when the key is depressed, and a second key lever provided with means for disengaein;Y the latch from the Step. v
4. ln a case shifting mechanism for typewriters. the coniliination .vith a rock shat'l havincr an arm, of a ke)v lever, a link connei-tingr the ke)v lever with the arm ot tht` rock shaft, a latch connected with thc rock shaft, and a .step on said key lever with which the latch cooperates .to lock the rock shaft again t movement when the' keY is depressed, Said link beingadjustablv eonnected to said ke)I lever and said step being,r
I also adjustably connected to the key lever.
5. ln a case shifting mechanism for type writing machines, the combination with-a roel; shaft having a plurality of arms7 of a shift lock lever having a piirand-.slot connection with one of said arms, a shift lever havingr a -like connection with one or .said
arms, a latch pivotally connecttal to one ot' said arms and provided with a shoulder adapted to cooperate with a projection on the shift lock level', a cam or incline on said latch, and a pin or projection on the .shift lever adapted to eof'perate with said cam or incline.
t'. In a ease shifting mechanism [or t vpc writing; machines, the comlnnation with a rock shaft having' a plurality of arms. ot' two -shift levers, adjustable pieces on said shift levers, and links connecting; said adjustable pieces with .said rock shaft arms h y means of p in-and-slot connections.
ln testimony whereot` I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
