To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT SANDVIK, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Tagus, in the county of Montraille and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin-Deliverers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices applicable for use in rural free delivery and is designed to provide a means whereby coins may be delivered to the carrier automatically.

A further object of this invention is to provide a money receptacle secured to the side of the mail box which will indicate to the carrier the presence of the coins and also to provide a collector which is permanently retained by the carrier that will automatically collect the coins from any one of a plurality of said depositories.

l/Vith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the combination, construction and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

The present invention resides in the provision of a depository secured to one side of the mail box, said depository having a compartment therein, in which the coins are normally placed, said compartment being provided with a pivotal bottom. A collector carried by the operator is adapted to enter the body portion of said depository below the coin compartment and automatically swing the bottom thereof in such a manner that the coins will drop into said collector,

at the same time reciprocating the cover of said collector to permit the coins to enter the same.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates the main body portion of the depository A, said body portion being provided with the orificed ears or lugs 11 through the instrumentality of which the depository is secured to the mail box by rivets,bolts or the like. The bottom 15 of the coin compartment 13 comprises a plate, said plate being bent centrally to form the loop which passes about the pin or shaft 16 located adjacent to the base of said coin compartment forming an arm 17 which extends vertically completely across the passage 12 when the bottom let is in its normal or operative position. In order to normally retain the bottom 15 in its operative position, a U-shaped spring 18 is mounted on the pin 19 adjacent the pin 16 which bears against the rear surface of the arm 17 and consequently swings the base in position.

A cover 20 is provided for the top of the coin compartment 13 and is bent downwardly along one edge where it is ournaled on the shaft or pin 21. In order to retain this cover in either a closed or open position, a spring 22 is mounted adjacent to the compartment on the pin 23, about which extends the terminals 24 and 24: bearing against the bent portion of the cover and one wall of the compartment 13 respectively, thus retaining the cover in an elevated or lowered position as illustrated in Fig. 8.

To provide a guide for the coins to insure their passage to the collector, a pair of projections 25 are disposed on each side of the compartment and extend a portion of the distance over the collector. The collector comprises a longitudinal receptacle 26, the inner extremity 27 of which is beveled inwardly to create a clearance for the arm 17. The sides 28 of the collector at the forward extremity thereof project to form a housing for the operating member as hereinafter more fully described. A cover 29 extends partially the length of the receptacle or collector from the forward extremity thereof leaving a passage or opening 30 over which This slide is provided with a lug 32 which engages the forward edge of the passage 12 and reciprocates the slide outwardly, thus leaving the opening 30 free for the passage of the coins while the rear terminal of the collector bears against the plates or arms 17 and swings the bottom through the opening 30 and into the receptacle 26 thus permitting the coins to drop into said receptacle. In

order to provide a means whereby the slide may be automatically closed, a Ushaped lever 33 is mounted between the extensions 28 and is adapted to bear against the forward terminal of said slide. A spring 34 is Wound about a pin 35 disposed in parallel relation to the mounting of the lever, one terminal of said spring engaging said lever, drawing the same toward the body of the collector. From this construction it will clearly be seen that the collector B which is retained by the carrier is pushed into the longitudinal passage by him reciprocating the slide and opening the bottom of the compartment 13 as heretofore described, permitting the coins to drop into the receptacle 26 after which the collector is withdrawn and the various elements will return to their normal positions through the provision of the

A flag or signal 36 is pivotally mounted on the side of the coin compartment 13 and is elevated and retained in such position by the spring 37 so that the carrier may be aware of the presence of coins within said compartment.

Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a depository adapted to be secured to a mail box having a movable closure, of a collector accompanying a carrier adapted to operate said closure and .receive coins from said depository, said collector being provided with a closure adapted to automatically open and close.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a depository having a coin compartment therein and a movable bottom for said coin compartment, of a collector adapted to cooperate with said depository having a slidable cover therefor, said cover and movable bottom adapted to simultaneously open and close.

3. A device of the class described, comprising a depository having a coin compartment therein, a movable base for said coin compartment adapted to remain normally closed, of a collector adapted to receive coins from said compartment provided with a reciprocating cover, said cover adapted to open previous to receiving coins from said compartment and automatically close after said reception.

4. A device of the class described comprising a depository, a coin compartment in said depository, a pivotal bottom for said coin depository, and a collector adapted to receive coins from said compartment by swinging said bottom, said coin collector adapted to close automatically.

5. A device of the class described comprising a depository having a coin compartment therein, a spring actuated cover for said coin compartment, a movable bottom closed, of a collector adapted to receive coins from said compartment provided with a reciprocatingly mounted spring actuated top adapted to simultaneously open and close with said movable bottom.

6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a depository comprising a cabinet having a coin compartment therein and a longitudinal passage located below said coin compartment, a movable spring actuated bottom provided for said coin compartment having a bottom projecting into said longitudinal passage, of a collector adapted to reciprocate in said longitudinal passage and operate against said arm thereby opening the bottom of said coin compartment permitting the collector to receive the coins contained therein.

7. In a device of the class described, the combination with a depository comprising a cabinet having a coin compartment therein and having a longitudinal passage below said coin compartment, a cover for said coin compartment, a spring actuated bottom adapted to cooperate with said coin compartment, said bottom having an arm projecting in said longitudinal passage, a signal carried by said depository, and a collector adapted to reciprocate in said longitudinal passage and operate against said arm projecting therein, and a cover for said collector adapted to open and close simul taneously with said bottom.

8. In a device of the class described, the combination with a depository, of a collector adapted to cooperate therewith, comprising a receptacle having an opening there-in, of a cover adapted to reciprocate over said opening, and means whereby said cover will be automatically opened as said receptacle receives coins from said depository.

9. In a device of the class described, the combination with a depository having a coin compartment therein, of a collector adapted to cooperate with said depository, comprising a receptacle having an opening therein, a reciprocatingly mounted cover for said opening, a spring adapted to retain said cover in a normally closed position, and means whereby said cover may be opened when said closure cooperates with said depository.

10. In a device of the class described, the combination with a depository comprising a cabinet having a coin compartment therein, a longitudinal passage below said coin compartment, of a collector adapted to reciprocate in said passage provided with a cover having a projection adapted to bear against the extreme of said passage, thereby opening the cover when said depository and collector cooperate.

11. In a device of the class described, the

combination with a depository comprising a cabinet having a coin compartment therein and a longitudinal passage below said coin compartment, a movable arm for said coin compartment and provided with an arm proj ecting into said passage, a collector adapted to reciprocate in said longitudinal passage provided with a spring actuated cover, a projection carried by said cover adapted to cooperate with the extremity of the longitudinal passage thereby opening the cover and bottom adapted to operate simultaneously.

12. In a device of the class described, the combination with a depository comprising a cabinet adapted to be secured to a mail box, having a coin compartment therein and a passage below said coin compartment, a spring actuated cover for said coin compartment and a movable spring actuated body for said coin compartment, said bottom being provided with an arm adapted to project into said longitudinal passage, of a collector adapted to reciprocate in said longitudinal passage provided with an opening in one extremity thereof, a cover adapted to reciprocate over said opening provided with a projection adapted to bear against the terminal of the passage, means whereby said cover may normally be retained in a closed position, said cover and bottom adapted to operate simultaneously when the opening in the collector coincides with the coin comp artm ent.
