APPARATUS FOR FEEDING OIL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of WVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Feeding Oil, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for feeding oil, and the special object of my improvements is to provide a compact and efiicient apparatus for containing and supplying oil to the crank case of a gas engine. I secure this object in the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a side view of the crank case of a gas engine and apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a section on the line a, a Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a detail sectional view, showing the valve and adjacent parts by which valve the port leading from the reservoir is controlled.
A, is the crank case of a gas engine adapted to be used upon automobiles.
B, is an inclosed chamber cast integral with the crank case A, and by the side thereof and made air-tight. The chamber B eX- tends laterally from the crank case near the top thereof, so that it may be readily connected with the crank case by pipes connected from the outside.
H, is a fitting communicating by the passage I, with the interior of the chamber B. D and E, are pipes each of which communicates with the fitting H, at one end, and at the other end opens into the bottom of the crank case A, at F, or G.
C, is a glass tube secured to the chamber B, in a vertical position, and communicating with said chamber at both ends, so as to indicate, in a well understood manner, the level of the fluid in said chamber.

P, is a screw-threaded plug adapted to en gage the screw-threads of the opening The chamber B,may be filled with oil through the opening 9, during which time the oil is prevented from flowing out of the chamber by the valve J, being pressed against its seat 71, by the spring K. When the screw-threaded plug P, is in position, as shown in Fig. 3, it contacts the upper end of the valve stem Q, Presses the valve J, away from its seat, as indicated in said figure, so that the oil is free to flow through the passage I, and pipes D and E, into the crank case A. The oil now flows into said crank case until it reaches the level therein, indicated in Fig. 2, when the ends F, G, of the pipes D, E, are covered by the oil, and no more air can pass up said pipes into the chamber B whereby the flow of oil is interrupted. WV hen enough of the oil in the crank chamber is used to bring the level below the upper part of the ends F, G, of the pipes D, E, air passes through said pipes up into the chamber B, and further oil is automatically supplied.
What I claim is:
1. The crank case A of a gas engine, an oil chamber B, pipes D and E communicating with each other and with the lower por tion of said oil chamber and with the crank case at points F and G distant from each other.
2. The combination of a crank case A of a gas engine made of cast metal, an oil chamber B cast integral therewith and extending laterally from near the top of said casing, a fitting H communicating with the lower portion of said chamber, pipes D and E connected with said fitting and communicating with said chamber at points F and G distant from each other.
