To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAF FIRUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at 838 Chene street, Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Swinging scaffolds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to swinging scaffolds and is particularly adapted and intended for use on those employed by painters for supporting a" ladder or other platform adjacent the side of a house or other buildm The object of the invention is to produce a device improved with respect to the mannor of and means for raising and lowering the scaffold, and for supporting the same at a desired distance from the wall. To this end the device includes a Windlass mechanism for operating the fall rope, and an adjustable arm for holding the-bracketaway from the building.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bracket. Fig. 2 is an edge view looking at the bracket in one direction. Fig. 3 is a similar view as seen from the opposite side.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the frame of the bracket consists of a bar bent to form uprights 6 and 7 at the opposite ends of a lower or bottom portion 8 on which latter the ladder or platform 9 rests. The uprights are connected by a cross bar 10 which is provided at its outer end, that is the end distant from the building, with a hook 11 to hold a safety rail 12. The upper end of the upright 7 is offset as at 13 to assist in holding a safety rail 14:. The upper end of the upright 6 is provided with a fork 15 for holding a safety rail 16. Another bar is bent to form an upright portion 17 which is fastened at its lower end to the cross bar 10 between the uprights 6 and 7. At its upper end said bar is bent to form a loop 18 to which one end of the fall rope 19 is tied, and the bar extends thence to con-' nection at 20 with the upright 7. A drum 21 is supported in bearing upon uprights 7 and 17, one end of the shaft of the drum having a ratchet 22 engaged by a detent 23, and the other end of said shaft having a beveled pinion 2 1 in mesh with a beveled gear 25 the shaft of which is provided with a crank handle 26, said shaft being mounted in a bearing box 27 fastened to a cross piece 28 between the uprights 6 and 17. The cross piece 29, which extends from the top of the upright 7 to the loop 18, has attached thereto a strap 30 which supports a roller 31 and a cam 32, and the end of the fall rope 19 passes between said roller and cam to connection with the drum.
At the lower inner corner of the frame is an arm 33 pivoted to the frame at 3 1 and having at its free end a roller 35 for contact with the building, and this arm carries a segmental rack 36 the notches of which will engage a pin 37 to the upright 6.
In the use of the device, the crank may be turned to raise or lower the bracket to desired position, and when set as desired, the detent 23 will prevent further slip. In lowering the bracket, the cam 32 may be manipulated (the detent being released) to produce suflicient friction to prevent too quick drop; and accordingly the scaffold may be readily brought to desired position. The roller 35 may be set as desired, to hold the scaffold at proper distance from the building, by manipulation of the rack 36, to engage the pin 37 in the desired notch. The intermediate bar 17 permits the loop to be located at substantially the middle line of the scaffold and also affords a support for the Windlass device.
