PRINTING MACHINE.
APPLICATION rmm APR. 22, 1910.
982,515. Patented Jan. 24, 1911.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILES I-I. MANN, OF LOUISIANA, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO BUFFUM TOOL COMPANY, OF LOUISIANA, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
PRINTING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24, 1911.
Original application filed. December 27, 1909, Serial No. 535,159. Divided and this application filed April 22, 1910. Serial No. 557,060.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILES H. MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisiana, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Printing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to printing machines, and particularly to printing machines of the type shown in my prior Patent No. 896,062, dated August 11, 1908, the present application being a division of my allowed application Serial No. 535,159, filed December 27, 1909.
The object of my present invention is to provide means of novel construction for taking up the wear on the reciprocating member to which the type-carrier is con nected.
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a portion of a printing machine constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 1 a vertical sectional view taken on the line w0c of Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View taken on approximately the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the adjustable wearcompensating devices on the actuating member for the type-carrier.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my present invention, A designates the typo-carrier of the machine, and B designates a vertically reciprocating plunger or actuating member that is provided at its lower end with a head C to which the type-carrier is connected. The yoke D on the type-carrier plunger B is alanged between stationary side guides l, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the portions of said plunger which lie above and below the yoke D, respectively, pass through a stationary guide 2 and a stationary guide 2 that extends transversely between the two side guides 1, as shown in Fig. 1. The continuous sliding movement of the yoke on the side guides 1 tends to cause said parts to wear away quickly and I have therefore provided one of said parts with a movable section or device that can be adjusted so as to compensate for this wear and prevent said parts from working loose.
In the preferred form of my invention, as herein shown, the yoke D is provided with two disk-shaped plugs or sections 3 that are arranged in recesses in the side faces of the yoke D so that they will bear against the inside faces of the side guides 1, as shown in Fig. 2, and an adjusting screw 4 is mounted in the yoke for moving said plugs outwardly into intimate engagement with the side guides 1 and thus prevent the yoke from working loose. The screw 4; is provided with a pointed end, as shown in Fig. 2, that cooperates with inclined surfaces 5 on the inner ends of shanks 3 that project inwardly from the movable sections or plugs 3, said adjusting screw acting as a wedge that moves both of the plugs 3 outwardly when. the screw is turned in one direction. Any suitable means can be employed for locking the screw 4; in its adjusted position, such, for example, as a lock nut 6, and while I have herein stated that the yoke is provided with a pair of adjustable wear-compensating devices, I do not wish it to be understood that my invention is limited to this exact construction for my bread idea consists in providing either the yoke or the side guides with one or more movable sections that can be adjusted to compensate for wear. The operating cam E that is arranged inside of the yoke 1) tends to cause the lower side of the yoke to wear quickly and I have therefore provided the lower side of the yoke with a removable wear plate 7 that is retained in position by means of a fastening device 8, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a printing machine, a type-carrier plunger provided intermediate its ends with a yoke, a cam arranged inside of said yoke for actuating said plunger, guides for the portions of said plunger WlllCll project in opposite directions from said yoke, side guides between which said yoke travels, a movable section arranged in one of the guide-engaging faces of said yoke and lying approximately flush with said face, said section being of less area than the face of the yoke in which it is mounted, and means for moving said section outwardly into intimate engagement with the side guide arranged adproximately flush with said side faces, in-
jacent thereto so as to compensate for the wear on said yoke and side guides.
2. In a printing machine, a type-carrier plunger provided intermediate its ends with a yoke, a cam arranged inside of said yoke for actuating said plunger, guides for the portions of said plunger which project in opposite directions from said yoke, side guides between which said yoke travels, a movable section arranged in one of the guide-engaging faces of said yoke and lying approximately flush with said face, a shank on said movable section provided wit-h an inclined surface, and an adjusting device carried by the yoke and bearing against the inclined surface on said shank for moving said section outwardly into intimate engagement with the side guide arranged adjacent thereto.
3. In a printing machine, a type-carrier actuating member provided with a yoke, side guides between which said yoke travels, disk-shaped devices arranged in recesses in the side faces of said yoke and lying apwardly projecting shanks on said'disks provided with inclined faces, and an adjusting device carriedby the yoke and having a tapered end which engages the inclined faces on said shanks and thus moves said devices outwardly to compensate for wear.
4. In a printing machine, a type-carrier actuating member provided with a yoke, side guides between which said yoke travels, a plurality of movable sections set in recesses in the guide-engaging faces of the yoke, in- 1 wardly projecting shanks on said movable sections provided with inclined ends, and an adjusting screw provided with a tapered end that projects between the inclined ends of said shanks.
5. A printing machine provided with a type-carrier actuating member, a yoke on said member, side guides between which said yoke travels, a plurality of movable sections arranged in the guide-engaging faces of said yoke and lying approximately flush with said faces, a device for adjusting said movable sections simultaneously to compensate for Wear, and means for locking said adjusting device in position.
6. A printing machine provided with a type-carrier, a plunger connected to said type-carrier and provided with a yoke, an operating cam arranged in said yoke, a removable wear plate arranged inside of said yoke so as to form a bearing surface for said cam, side guides between which said yoke travels, movable wear-compensating devices set flush in the guide-engaging faces of said yoke and being of less area than said faces, and means for moving said devices out-- wardly into intimate engagement with said side guides.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this 16th day of April, 1910.
MILES H. MANN.
