Be it known that I, \VILLIAM E. SHRAYER, citizen of the United States, and resident of Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-\Vriting Machines, of which the following is a speeification.
My invention relates to typewriting machines'and more particularly to the joints bet-ween the type bars and hangers in such machines.
One of the main objects of my invention is to provide simple and eflicient bearing joints, and a further object of the invention is to provide ints in which lost motion due to wear may be taken up to prevent undue looseness in the joint.
To the above and other ends which will. hereinafter appear,-1ny invention consists in the features of construction, arrange "ments of parts and combinations of devices set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary side view showing a. portion of the typewriting machine with a type bar hanger embodying 'my invention mounted therein. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail transverse sectional view of a type bar and hanger taken on the line a9a; of Fig. 1 and-looking in the direction of the arrow at. said figure, the parts in this view being shown in the process of assembling them. Fig. 3 is. an enlarged detail front elevation of the type 'bar and hanger embodying my invention, a
portion of.the type bar being sectioned away. Fig. 4 is a view corresponding to Fig. except that the parts are shown in the positions which they attain when they are assembled. i
I have shown my invention embodied in the present instance in a front-strike typewriting machine, although it should be understood that the invention may be embodied in various forms of typewriting machines.
The frame of the machine comprises corner posts 1 which support atop plate 2 over which a carriage travels from side to side of the machine, said carriage carrying slotted at 7 for the free passage there- Each of these hangthrough of the stem of .a headed screw 8 received iii a tapped opening in the type bar segment at, the head of each screw bearing against the foot piece of the associated hanger in order to secure it in its adjusted position. The slot 7 is one which extends longitudinally of the foot piece and is slightly wider than the diameter of the stem of the screw, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, in order to'afford a slight lateral, as well as a lengthwise, adjustment of the hanger. The hanger is bifurcated to form side bearing arms 9 which receive the heel or hub 10 of a type bar 11 between the arms formed. by the bifurcation of the hanger. The arms 9 are perforated at 12 for the free passz'tge therethrough of the members of a two-part pivot. One member 13 of the twopartpivot comprises a cylindrical stem 14: which is adapted to pass freely through the opening 12 in one of the check or bearing plates 9 of the hanger and through an opening 15 in the heel 10 of the type bar. This member 13 is likewise provided with a conical bearing head 16 adapted to fit within a corresponding recess in one of the cheek or bearing plates 9 in the hanger. The central opening 17 which extends entirely through the member 13 terminates at the headed end of the member in a month 18 which is slightly flared as indicated in Fig. 2 for purposes which will hereinafter appear. The other member 19 of the two-part rivet comprises a stem portion 20 .which has a slight taper from the headed end 21 thereof toward the-opposite end. The head of this member of the two-part rivet, like the other member, is conical in form and is re ceived within a corresponding recess 22 in 1 one of the side or bearing plates t) of the hanger. The diameter of the stem 20 of the member 19 is such that in forcing the member 19 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that illustrated in Fig. 1, the cylindrieal stem -h ke portion of the member 1 3 ivi ll be expanded in the opening 15 in the heel of the type bar in order to securely connect the member 13 to the type bar to turn therewith a The end of themember 19 opposite its head is recessed as at 23 in order to facilitate expanding the metal as at 2st within the daring mouth 18 of'the member 13' when the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. This rivets the two members 13 and it) together and connects the type bar to its hanger.
It will be observed that the conical heads 16 and 21 of the two-part pivot constitute bearing heads'which turn in the corresponding bearing recesses in the arms 9 of the hanger and that the stem-like portions of the members 13- and 19 do not contact with the walls of the openings 12 in the hanger arm. this wear may be taken up by forcing the conical heads toward each other to seat them more firmly in their hearing openings and a further upsetting or riveting of themetal at it will securely unite the members of the two-part pivot in their newly adjusted position. lVhen the parts have been assembled and connected in the manner described, as is shown in Fig.3, both members of the twopart pivot will be securely united to turn with the type bar and the conical bearing heads will form an ellicient bearing for the type bar to prevent lateral deflection of the type bar, in its printing movement.
It will be understood that the type bars with their hangers are segmentally arranged and that the type bars strike upwardly. and rearwardly against the front face of the platen 3, being actuated in their printing movements by pull links 25 connected to suitable key actuated devices not shown.
It will be seen that the only portions of the joint which come into bearing contact during the movement-of the type bar are the conical heads '10 and 21 of the two-part pivotand the bearing openings inwhich these conical heads are recelved.
,In practice I prefer to harden the two members of the twopart pivot and after- I ward anneal only the stems or shank portions thereof so that the conical bearing heads which take the wear,'will remain hardened whereas the stems or shanks, on which there is no wear, will be soft. By providing the two members with soft shanks or stems the hollow shank-may be readily expanded within the opening 15 in the type bar without driving the member 19 in with undue force and the soft metal enables a more tenacious grip or binding action to be effected between the two parts of the rivet and between the rivet and the type bar.
Moreover, in assembling the parts but eomthe other hand, it is desired to loosen the joint the hanger maybe supported on an anvil so that the head 2l of the member 19 will be over an opening in the anvil. A slight tapping on the op osite end of the member 19 at this time wi l tend to separate the two members, thus moving the bearing heads thereof away from each other to loosen the joint.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my in vention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar, a bifurcated hanger, and
a two-part pivot which pivotally connects the type bar and hanger, the two parts of the pivot being riveted together and connected-to turn with the type bar, and to re ceive a turning movement in the bifurcated hanger.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar, a hanger, and a twopart pivot which connects the type bar and hanger, the two parts of the pivot'being riveted together and connected to tu n with the type bar, each member of the t o-part pivot having a conical bearing head. I

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar, a hanger, one being bifurcated to receive the other, and a twopart pivot which when the parts thereof are connected together connects the type bar to the hanger and fixedly connects the pivot to the member which is received in the bifurcated member. 8. In a typewriting machine, the combina' tion of a bifurcated hanger, a type bar received in the bifurcation of the hanger, and.
a two-part pivot which when the parts thereof are connected together connects the type bar to the hanger and fixedly connects the pivot to the type bar.
9. In'a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar and hanger,one of the members being bifurcated to receive the other, and a two-part pivot connected to the non-bifurcated member and connecting together the type bar and hanger members, the outer ends of the pivot parts having conical heads which are seated and turn in corresponding recesses in the bifurcated member.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar, a hanger, one being bifurcated to receive the other, and a two-part pivot the parts of which are riveted together and which when so riveted together pivotally connects the type bar to the hanger and fixedly connects the pivot to the member which is received'in the bifurcated member.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a bifurcated hanger, a type but received in the bifurcation of the hanger, and a two-part pivot the parts of Which are riveted together and which when the parts thereof are riveted together pivotally connects the type bar to the hanger and fixedly connects the pivot to the type bar.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar having an opening therein, a bifurcated hanger in which said type bar is received, a headed sleeve which passlis through an opening in a side arm of the'hanger formed by the bifurcation and through said opening in the type bar, a
headed rivet which passes throughan opening in the other arm of the hanger and,
which is received in said sleeve and expands it to fixedly connect the sleeve to the type,

therein, a bifurcated hanger in which said type bar is received and which has conical recesses in the side arms formed by the bifurcation therein, and a two-part pivot the parts of which are riveted together, one part of the rivet being in the nature of a sleeve with a conical bearing head and the other part being in the nature of apivot received in thesleeve and expanding the sleevein the opening in the type bar and having a co'nical bearing head, said conical heads being hardened and received in the conical opnings in the hanger arms Whereas the stems of the parts constituting said two-part rivet are of soft metal.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combie nation of a type bar, a hanger, and a two part pivot which connects the type bar and c hanger, the two parts of the pivot being f riveted together, the stems of the rivets be ing of soft metal and the heads thereof being hardened and constituting bearings for the type bar.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar, a hanger, and a twopart pivot which connects the type bar and hanger, the two parts of the pivot being riveted together and connected to turn with the typebar, each member of the two part pivot havinga conical bearing head of hard metal and a stem of soft metal.
16. In typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar, a hanger, and a twopart pivot which connects the type bar and hanger, one member of said two-part pivot being received in and expanding the other member to fixedly connectit with one of the type bar and hanger members, each of said members having a hardened bearing head and a soft stem.
