ADJUSTABLE INVALID-COT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24, 1911.
Application filed March 16, 1910. Serial No. 549,709.
To all whom it may concernf Beit known that I, ROYAL RUEBEN MIL- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Invalid-Cots, of which the following` is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable cots in which a cot is elevated above the mattress on the bed by pulley and screw means.

Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my device attached to a bed; Fig. 2 is a broken section in plan View showing means for at taching the edges of the fabric to the sides of the cot frame; Fig. 3 is a perpendicular sectional view showing the tube containing the screw threaded means of operating the cables over pulleys; Fig. 4 is a perpendicu` lar cross sectional View of the tubing containing the pulley means in which operates one of the elevating cables; Fig. 5 is a plan view in broken section of the cot showing the attachment of cables and means of tightening' the fabric; Fig. 6 is a broken sectional side view showing the ratchet and pawl on the end of the cot for holding the fabric tight; and Fig. 7 is a perspective view in broken sect-ion of one of the sides of the cot showing the fabric and means of attaching the same to the sides of the cot frame.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several drawings.
On the ends 1 of a bed is attached, preferably the foot of the bed,.the square tubing 3, by clamp and hook means 4 and 5. On the other end 1 of the bed, preferably the head, is attached the tubing 14 by clamp means 15. Fixed on the upper end of the square tubing 3 is the pulley head and bearing' 6 in which is adjusted the pulley 8. In the top of bearing 6 a space 6a is provided for a threaded bar 22 to pass through. At the bottom of the square tubing 3 is attached the pulley and bearing head 7 in which is adjusted the pulley 9. A screw threaded bar 22, the upper part 22b being right threaded and the lower part 22a being left threaded, the threaded parts being preferably of equal length, is adjusted on .the interior of the square tube 3, in suitable bearings at each end of said tube. On the interior of the square tube 3 engaging the `threads 22b is the threaded nut 26 to which is attached the cable 10. Also in the in` 'terior of said square tube 3, engaging the threads 22a is the threaded nut 27, t0 which is attached the cable 21. These threaded nuts 27 and 26 are preferably made square :so as to prevent turning. If desired, these :nuts may be provided with anti-friction bearings against theinside of the tube. In `the bottom of the bearing 7 the space 7a is provided for the end portion of the threaded `bar 22. There is attached at the bottom of l.the threaded portion 22a a thrust collar 23 .held in position by cotter pin means 23a. On the upper portion 22b of the threaded bar a thrust collar 24 is fiXed and held in .position by Cotter pin means 24a. The upper portion of the threaded bar extends through the opening 6'EL and'has a square head 25 to which may be applied the crank l20. It is apparent that the parts of the vbar 22 may be threaded opposite to the way indicated.
The cot' frame is composed of the round side bars 28, preferably hollow, divided at 39 and adjustable with a piece sliding into the interior of each bar 28 fixed by set screw means 40. To each end piece 30 is attached the pawl 31. In one end of each side piece 28 is a ratchet wheel 29 in which the pawl 31 engages and adjacent thereto in the side bar are the holes 32 for applying the bar 33. i Each side bar 28 is turnable in the end bars 30 by having a shoulder fitting a bearing in each end of each end bar and. is held by screw and nut means 38. On each side bar 28 a metal strip 37 is attached with aneXtending flange parallel with the surface of the side bar 28 but leaving a required space. On the edge of each side of the fabric 34 a pocket 35 is prepared into which fits the strip 36. The strip 36 is placed in the pocket 35, and the pocket is placed in the flange portion of 37 and the flange is so placed that the pull of the fabric is against the free edge of the flange 37 on each side bar when a side bar is turned to tighten the fabric. The cables 12 are attached to each cables, fabric covering said frame, tubing end piece 30, one to each end of each end piece and united at 11 to the cables 10 and 21 respectively.
The crank 2O is provided, fitting the square hea-.d 25'. The tubing 14: attached as above stated to the end of the bed opposite to the square tubing 3- has attached to it the pulley head 18 in Which is adjusted the pulley 19', and the pulley head 16' in which is adjusted thel pulley 17. The side barsl28 by means of the divisions at 39, when the device not in use, may occupy a lesser length, and by means of the set screws-40 on an interior bearing pri-ece may be made the required length tor use.
The cot is placed over the .ordinary mattress 21 and the fabric` adjusted to the required tension by turning .the side bars 28 with the lever 33, and the ratchets 29 and pa-Wls 31 hold the fabric at the required tension.4 The cables being attached 'to the cot and over the respective pulleys, and the patient having been placed on the cot, the operator, by applying the crank 20, may elevate the cot to the desired position and the cot Will stay in that posit-ion until the operator turns the crank 20" the opposite direction and lets the cot down to the mattress 2. Means for attaching the cables at 11 by any Well known hook means or at 13 may be provided and either end of the cot be detached from connection With the cables and the opposite end may be elevated, or in like man ner either side may be elevated and the de vice may be used in connection With leaves on the cot so that one part may :be elevated and the other part remain stationary'.
In this device it .readily appears that a modilication of the form of attachment ofl the cables to the cot frame, or a modification of the cot trame, or a modification of the pulley means, could be made Without departing from the principle of my invenn tion, in simplicity and novel means of elevating the cot frame, and in attaching the edges of the fabric to theV sides of the cot.

In .an invalid cot provided with two upright tubing pieces each carrying a pulley at each end, one tubing piece adapted Vto permit the passing of a cable through it, 'both attachable by clamp means to the ends. of a bed'stead, havin-g .operating cables suitably disposed `over said pulleys, alsoI provided with a cot iframe attachable by cable means to said eperating cables and including lsuitable operating crank means, the combination of a right handed threaded nut and a left handed threaded nut to each of which is attached respectively one end of one ofV said operating cables, `disposed Within one of said tubing pieces and not turnable therein, and a bar on bearings Within last said tubing piece one part threaded right hand with the other part threaded left hand adapted to engage said nuts having a head adapted to engagement with said crank means, all substantially as set forth.
