ELECTRODE FRAME AND HANGER.
osaoev.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 1'?, 1911.
Application filed February 9, 1910. Serial No. 542,949.
To all whom i may concern: 4
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. SCHOEN- MEHL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of l/Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrode Frames and Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to primary batteries, such as employ copper oXid and zinc couples, in plate form, as their electrodes and refers more particularly to a supporting frame for said elements and whereby the assembled couple may be suspended by a single rod from the cover of a Jar.
It is the purpose of the invention to provide a suitable rigid form of suspending rod for the above class of elements when carried by a frame including a straight top sheet metal channel section; to construct the rod so that it can readily be attached to said horizontal top cross portion of the frameand also form one of the poles of the battery, to design the rod so that the assembled elements may be attached to or detached from a j ar cover by the operation of a single nut, to so design the rod and connecting parts as to insure the same being inexpensively manufactured; and finally to provide an insulating sleeve for said rod whereby the same is protected.
The accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification show several views of my invention and throughout said figures similar characters of reference will be found to designate the respective parts.
Figure 1, of these drawings, shows a side view of a sheet metal channel frame inclosing a compressed copper oXid plate and provided with my improved form of single suspending rod and insulating sleeve therefor. Fig. 2, is a central vertical sectional view of Fig. 1, and showing both positive plates insulatively attached t-o the frame. Fig. 3, is a top plan view of the rod, frame and attached positive and negative elements, ready for attachment to a battery cover, and Fig. 1, is a det-ached view of the suspending rod and connected top sheet metal channel cross portion, which forms the essential elements of my invention.
Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings 10 indicates a negative electrode which as before intimated may be formed of compressed oxid of copper. The edges of this plate are preferably beveled to better receive the several sheet metal channel strips thatV form the frame for inclosing the edge portions of the plate. As shown in the present drawings there are four of these channel strips, one for each edge of the frame. The frame may, however, be of any preferred construction so long as it includes a horizontal top cross portion. The bottom cross channel strip 11 is pierced to receive the tongue 12 on lower end of the side strips 13 and which is bent under and against the said bottom strip to rigidly connect the'parts together. The upper end of the side strips 13 are also provided with slots through which the two tongues 14 on each end of the top cross portion 15 are passed, and bent around on the opposite faces of the sides, thus firmly securing the upper ends of the sides to the horizontal top cross portion and inclosing the copper plate 10 firmly within the frame formed by the said channel strips. The central part of the sides of the top cross channel is widened somewhat and notched out as at 16 to correspond with a notch 17 in the top edge of the plate 10. The three notches combined form a hole through the frame and electrode to receive corresponding shaped lugs 18 on the inside of the insu lat ing block 19 attached to the opposite sides of the frame and negative electrode. A central hole is formed through these two blocks to receive the bolt 2O that serves not only to secure them in place but also for the attachment of the positive plates 21 and to electrically connect them together and form a binding post 22 for the attachment of a field wire 31 to the positive side of the battery element.
By reason of the foregoing construction 1t will be apparent that the blocks 19 properly serve to insulate the positive from the negative side of the battery, and together with the bolt draws the sides of the top cross piece snug against the top of the plate and thus rigidly hold the said frame member to which it will be seen the suspending rod 23 is connected.
In the top surface of the top cross channel I provide a hole 24 through which the suspending rod 23 is inserted for attachment to the frame. The inner or lower end of this rod is provided with an enlarged head 25 that is preferably of a size and shape to conform to the space within the cross portion-15 and intermediate of the upper part of notch 17 in negative plate. rI`he under flat side of this head rests upon the top surface of the lugs or blocks. The rod is threaded and provided With a loiver nut 26 which is run down against the top of horizontal cross portion to clamp the strip to the rod and Whereupon the insulating sleeve 32 is slipped on to cover the rod and nuts. The rod is further fitted With an upper nut Q7 that is seated in a suitable socket in upper end of sleeve. The rod is then passed through the central hole 30 of the cover 29 and the top nut 28 run back against top side to secure the parts together; A. field Wire, not shown may be connected to the extended end portion of this rod to form the connection With this side of the battery While the opposite Wire 31 inay be .connected as shown to the positive side of the elements and passed out through a second hole in cover.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent is l. In a primaryv battery the combination with a negative plate, of a frame for engaging the edge portions of saidv plate and including a horizontal top channel cross portion having a hole through nthe central part of its top portion, a singlesuspending rod passing through and supported from the cover passing through the hole and hav ing an elongated head upon the inside of the channel cross portion that is disposed against it and longitudinally therein, and additional means upon the rod for securing the rod and horizontal cross portion together.
2. In a primary battery, the combination with a negative plate, having a notch in its top edge portion, a frame for supporting the plate, and including a straight top channel cross portion having a hole therethrough, a single suspending rod arranged in said hole and having an elongated head lengthwise seated in and conforming to thevspace under the top channel cross portion and in the notch of the plate, and means upon the rod to rigidly secure the parts together.
Signed, at Bridgeport in the county of Z Fairfield, and State of donnecticut this 2nd day of FebruaryA. 11,1910.
