TED STATES ZPATENT 1 OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented J an. 17, 1911.
Application filed September 23, 1909. Serial No. 519,186.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tnoms HENRY BEcKs GAYNER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 113 Neville street, South Melbourne, in the State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, cycle mechanic, have invented a Fabric for Inflatable Articles, of which the following is a specification.
The object ofthis invention is "to enable inflatable articles which have heretofore been generally made of rubber or the like to be made up from textile material which is so treated as to render same not only airproof but capable of automatically sealing any punctures which may occur therein. This is achieved by treating textile material on one surface, 2'. e. that which will be the inner surface of the inflatable article, with the commercial preparation known as Turkish bird-lime, as hereinafter more particularly described. Accordingly I take a suitable textile material such as canvas, waterproof sheeting, or the like and apply thereto a coating or layer of Turkish bird-lime of a thickness of say from 1/16th to 3/8th of an inch, and in, order to together, said coating is lightly covered or dusted over with kapok, French chalk or other suitable non-adhesive substance. The textile material thus treated may be made up into various inflatable articles usuallymade of rubber or the like, or certain articles such. as air tubes or pneumatic tires may convenientl be first partially made up and then treated with the Turkish bird-lime by Thev invention is applicable to a, large variety of articles besides air-tubes, such for instance as pneumatic horse-collars and Saddlery, air cushions, pneumatic seats for furniture, and is more especially of use. as applied toinflatable articles which are liable to puncture by reason of its automatic sealing property.
If desired the articles may be fitted with valves for the purpose of inflation, or this may be effected by the insertion through the treated material of a light hollow needle layer, D,
prevent sticking" attached to an air or gas pump, inasmuch as on withdrawing same the puncture made by the needle is lmmediately sealed.
In some cases thetextile material may be first furnished with a thin film of pure rubher on the inner bird-lime is applied.
The employed as aforesaid is made from the berries of a tree-called Mikssass, known botanically as Oarolz'a myma, which grows in Syria, Queensland and other places. It is a commercial preparation already on the market.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of an article formed in accordance with the. invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a modified construction. 1 v
Referring to Fig. 1, in which an inflatable article, such as a cushion, is shown,Adesignates the textile material such as canvass, and C the coatin of Turkish bird lime, upon which is' lig tl covered or dusted a of non-a hesive substance. E designates a hollow needle provided with side before the Turkish preparation of Turkish bird-lime perforations, which needle is adapted 'to be attached directly pump for inflating the article, nates a non-return air valve of the ordinary type, such as used with tires and the like, which may be connected with an air pump, if desired, for the purpose of inflating the article.
The article shown in Fig. 2 is similar to the article shown in Fig. 1, with the exception that a thin film,
Throughout this specification the expression textile material shall be taken to include any equivalent or normally pervious, flexible material suitable for the purpose for which the inflatable article is intended. Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same'is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is;
'1. As an article of manufacture, a fabric for inflatable articles comprising textile material having one of its surfaces coated with a layer of Turkish bird lime, said layer B, of rubber 1s pro-- .vided bet-weenthe layer A and the layer C.
