HANDLE OR BAIL.
senses.
Application filed 'March 17, 1908.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT R. PRITGHARD, a citizen ot the United States, and resident ot' Rochester, in the county ot' Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and uselul Improvements in Handles or Bails, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to handles or bails, for sheet-metal vessels.
rlhe object oi' the invention is to produce a strong, cheap handle ear, which may be applied to a vessel, such as a sheet metal wash boiler, etc., in such a manner that the strain of lifting said vessel is borne, to a large extent, by the rim thereof, instead of by the weaker and thinner sides.
In the drawings :#Figure l is a side elevation of a vessel embodying this invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the ear; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 o' Fig. 2, showing the handle in place; and Fig. el is a perspective view of the parts shown in Fig. '2, but from the opposite side.
ln Fig. l is shown a wash-boiler l, having an outwardly projecting rim formed over a round wire 2 in the usual manner. The handle ear is formed of a piece of sheet metal 3, doubled upon itself in such a manner as to leave at the bend a tubular loop or socket 3 adapted to receive a part of the handle 4c. lhile the ear blank is tlat, one or more tongues 5 are punched out, and are left standing up, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, when the piece is bent outwardly from the back plate and doubled over around the handle 4 and forms the Jliront plate 9 olf the ear. rlhe said tongues form' part of the back plate 8 of the ear which lies in contact with the side of the vessel. The front plate 9 in the example shown is fastened to the vessel by the same rivets that tasten the back plate thereto. plate 8 and the front plate or portion 9, by which the loop 8a is formed, are integral portions of the whole handle ear 3.
In fastening the ear upon the vessel 1,

upward, so that the tongues 5 are jammed tightly between the sheet metal side of the vessel and the lower edge of the wire rim 2, (Fig. 3), and it is then fastened in that position by means ot rivets 6, 6. The tongues of the back plate thus engage under the projecting rim where it meets the side of the vessel.
l The handles Ll are of bail shape and are bent inwardly at the sides, so that the hand l grasps 7, by reason of this bend, may come y vertically above the loops or sockets and it is pressed substantially in the plane of the back plate.
When the boiler l is lifted by means ot' said handles, the tongues 5, being pressed so closely against the rim Q, transmit the lift ing strain vertically to the rim, and reduce that upon the sheet metal sides of the vessel l and upon the rivets. Even when being carried by two persons, so that the direction of l pull is at an angle to the vertical sides of l the vessel, the strain comes almost entirely upon the tongues 5 and rim wire 2.
By doubling the ear around the handle 4 as shown, a strong construction is obtained. Since the ear completely encircles the handle (Fig. 3), enough stock is left between the tongues 5 to give the necessary rigidity to the structure.
What I claim is The combination with a sheet metal ves- 1 sel having the usual outwardly-projecting wire rim, of a handle ear consisting of a piece oic sheet metal doubled upon itself to l form at the bend a tubular loop 3EL adapted to 1 receive the handle, and having a tongue 5 1 punched out from it and lett standing up l in the plane of the back piece of the ear, l adapted to jam between the wire rim and the side of the vessel; and the handle e bent inwardly to bring the hand grasp verl tically over above the attaching ear; substantially as shown and described.
ALBERT R. PRITGHARD. Vitnesses:
