The longitudinally movable friction shell and guide box D is exteriorly of a general rectangular shape and fits `between and is guided longitudinally by the draft sills A A, vand also its between the upper and lower members b1 b1 of theV draft yolre B'. It has a central friction portion or shell d, having an internal,A preferably cylindric, friction -face d1 with which tlie external friction faces 'e of the segment-al Vfriction shoes E are in sliding frietional engagement. The longitudinally movable friction shell and guide box D is also provided at its rear portion with longitudinal slots or chambers d2 to receive the connecting rod P and the thimbles or hollow stems m of the inner spring seatstM. rIfhe longitudinally movable friction shell and guide box D is also provided with integral curved guides Z8 d4 for engagement with the curved faces h rl ofthe' pressure transferringblocks or members H .and thus transferring the longitudinal pres sure ofthe drawbar and draft yoke into a' transverse one against the transversely a'r- A ranged springs L and the interposed followers K and inner springl seats M. The segmental and longitudinally movable friction shoes E have inner inclined or wedgling faces@1 and should ers e2' for cooperation with the corresponding inclined or wedge faces f and shoulders f1, of the wedge F and interposed anti-friction rollers F1.
The wedge F is preferably pyramidal or three faced, its' faces corresponding in number to the number of the segmental 4friction slioes'E and it is interposed between the front 'follower C and the friction slices E. A 4longitudinal connecting rod F2 extends and the shell and guide boX D, the head f2 of the connecting rod FZ fitting in a sui-tablev recess f3 in the wedge F 'and its threaded nut j lbattling against the transerse 'arieh c tris l vIl() and guide box D. vThisconnecting rod serves to hold the wedge F, friction shoes E, pressure block G, pressure 'transfer blocks H, all assembled in cooperative rela- 1 tion to each other within the friction shell and guide box.

In operation, in buiilng, the longitudinal movement and pressure of the draw-bar is transferredvby the coperating members G, H, 'D and K intoa transverse pressure against the 'transversely arranged springs -L L1, the friction shell and guide box. D. l being held stationary by the rear stops while v thefriction shoes slide in respect to the friction shell. In pulling, the operation is the same. but the reverse, 'the front follower, wedgeand friction shoes being held station-l ary by the front stops while the friction shell and guide box D move forwardwith the draw-bar and' draft yoke, the A transversely arranged spring and-'connecting rod having also .a diminished forward longitudinal movement. This enables mewith a given spring of standard `make or extent-of compression to stunt-ly vincreasing relative spring movement.
This increases the cushioning efficiency of the draft rigging'as a whole, and also pro'- vides for proper cushioning action under,
light or service strains on the draw-bar.

In a friction draft rigging, the combi- "nat-ion with draft sills having longitudinal nally movable friction slots therein, draft lugs secured thereto, draw-bar and dra-ft yoke, of a longitudishell, segmental friction slices and wedge within the shell, trans` versely acting and longitudinally movable' springs, a connecting' rod for said springs extending through said slots in said draft sills, an inner pair of spring seats having thiinbles surrounding said connecting rod and extending through said slots in the draft sills, transversely and longitudinally movable followers engagingv said spring extends, and lpressure transferring means between. the substantially as specified.

In a friction draft rigging, the combination with draft sills having longitudinal slots therein, draft lugs secured thereto, draw-bar and draft yoke, of 'a longitudi nally movable friction shell, segmental friction shoes and wedge withinthe shell, transversely acting and longitudinally movable springs, a connecting rod for said springs extending through said slots in said draft sills,an inner pair of spring seats having thimbles surrounding said connecting rod and extending through said slots in the draft sills, transversely and longitudinally movable followers engaging said spring seats and through which said connecting rod eX- tends, a bearing block engaging the friction shoes and pressure transferring blocks between the bearing block and the followers substantially as specified. l
