  • T his invention relates to improvements in rope clutches adapted to work in connection with a sheave or pulley, and for use in warehouses, shops, barns, etc., and has for its object to provide means whereby loads may not only be raised by the rope and sheave or pulley, but also held suspended after the draft or elevating power is released, by gripping or holding said rope or other elevating means, by simple and efficient mechanism adapted to be thrown into or out of gripping or clutching position preferably by either manipulation of the elevating means or by independent means, as desired, thus adapting it to various kinds of work, in difierent positions, etc.

ROPE-CLUTCH OR CLUTCH-PULLEY.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. Born, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rope- Glutches or Clutch-Pulleys, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
T his invention relates to improvements in rope clutches adapted to work in connection with a sheave or pulley, and for use in warehouses, shops, barns, etc., and has for its object to provide means whereby loads may not only be raised by the rope and sheave or pulley, but also held suspended after the draft or elevating power is released, by gripping or holding said rope or other elevating means, by simple and efficient mechanism adapted to be thrown into or out of gripping or clutching position preferably by either manipulation of the elevating means or by independent means, as desired, thus adapting it to various kinds of work, in difierent positions, etc. I attain these objects by providing mechanism to clutch, grip, or wedge the rope or elevating means in the frame or just outside the rim of the sheave or pulley, and means pivoted or attached to the axle or frame of said pulley and adapted to carry said clutching or gripping mechanism, and preferably extended out on the opposite side of its pivot whereby it may be operated if desired to clutch the said elevating means, substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sheave or pulley with my clutching or gripping device carried by side arms or levers pivoted on the aXle outside the frame. Fig. 2 is a front view of same, and Figs. 3, 1, 5, and 6 are detail views of different parts, as hereinafter set forth, these views, except Fig. 2 which is additional, being enlarged views of similar parts shown in my application for Letters Patent for improvements in elevator and carrier apparatus, filed Dec. 27, 1904, Serial Specification of Letters Patent.

In the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, y, is the sheave or pulley, carried by a frame or casing a of any suitable construction, (the upper or supporting part of said frame being broken away'as shown) as this may be of any desired form or construction adapted to the purposethe pulley and clutch are to be used for, and does not affect the operation of the clutching device.
D is the draft rope or elevating means.
J is the rope clutch, pivoted preferably at the end of a lever, frame, or arm 0, which latter is hung or pivoted preferably upon the axle of the pulley 3 over which said draft or elevating rope D runs, as in Fig. 1, (though it may be otherwise attached or pivoted to the frame of said pulley if desired.) Said clutch and lever drop down into the position shown by dotted or broken lines when said rope is running freely over said pulley, and are thrown up to engage said draft rope D, as shown in full lines, when it is desired to hold the load suspended, said rope clutch J, being run up in the groove of the sheave or pulley underneath the said draft rope D, and clutching and binding said rope against the frame or cover (or other means for holding,) above said pulley, as shown in said Fig. 1, (see also Fig. 2.) Said clutch is operated either by the rope or cord 72, attached to the opposite end of said lever O, or by the manipulation of said draft rope D, or otherwise, as desired.
hen loads are being raised by hand, as in a warehouse, etc., by pulling the draft or elevating rope down over the pulley it may be made to catch into the clutch when said clutch is in its lower or free position, as shown in dotted or broken lines in Fig. 1; and being held down while it is allowed to run back, said rope will carry said clutch up with it until it is caught and binds in the frame above said pulley, as shown in full lines in said Fig. 1, thus holding against the load or strain. By pulling said draft rope again outwardly, said clutch may be pulled outwardly until it releases itself by gravity or otherwise from said rope and falls back into the position shown by dotted or broken lines; (or it may be released by the use of a cord, or a spring (not shown) coiled around its pivot or otherwise attached, or other suitable means,) leaving said rope free to descend with its load, or to pick up another load, etc., and the operation may be repeated. This clutch J, and supporting arms or levers, are held from dropping down too far by suitable stops or lugs (not shown,) formed on the lever, or side arm, or frame, on one side to engage with the pulley frame, (or vice versa,) as will be understood, or by the end of the short lever or arm, on the opposite side from the long or operating lever 0, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, (as at 0, Figs. 2 and 6,) being bent around at the opposite side of the axle or pivot, as at 0 Figs. 2 and 6, to engage with the frame at one side of said pulley, (or other means used,) to form a stop, as will be readily understood. Short lugs J 3 are also preferably provided at each side of said clutch J, as in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, to engage with the edges of said levers or arms 0, O, at each side near its pivot J (see Figs. 1 and 2,) and hold the point or opposite end of said clutch in proper place, allowing a limited movement. A lengthwise sectional detail view of this clutch is shown at J in said Fig. 5, showing this lug or stop J at one side; also views from the upper side of said clutch at J J Figs. 3 and 4, showing said stop lugs J J, at each side, and the pivot or bolt J*, by which said clutch is connected to said side arms or levers O, O, as in Figs. 1 and 2, as will be readily understood. The inner engaging face of the said clutch is shown as convex in Fig. 3, (as may be preferable in some cases,) and as concave in Fig & and the other views, to fit a round rope, etc. When the draft rope or elevating means however is being run through other pulleys also overhead where it cannot be easily reached, ,or where more convenient for other reasons, a small rope or cord 02, Figs. 1 and 2, may be attached to the end of the lever O as shown, and used to throw the said clutch J up to engage and hold said draft rope as shown, and if desired, a small rope or cord may also be attached to the belt or pivot J of said clutch J, (or other convenient place,) by which said clutch may be released from said draft rope, as will be understood, in which case a clutch with a smooth engaging face might be preferable, and save wear on the rope.
The operation of the device, and its essential points, will be readily understood from the foregoing, and it is also evident that various slight mechanical changes or alterations may be easily'made in the different parts to adapt it to different uses, or conditions, or with difierent elevating means, etc., and having shown the same in what I consider its most preferable form for general use, I wish it distinctly understood that I hereby explicitly reserve to myself all such modifications, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as properly come within the scope of my invention, and for all purposes for which it may be adapted and useful.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a sheave or pulley and a suitable framework for the same, means pivoted at one side of said pulley and carrying a clutching or wedging means outside of the rim of said pulley, and means independent of said sheave or pulley to cause said clutching or wedging means to engage with suitable draft applying means running over said pulley, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a sheave or pulley, a suitable frame to hold the same, and draft applying means, as a rope, etc., adapted to run through said frame and over said pulley, a clutch, wedge, or locking device carried just outside the rim of said pulley on a. pivoted means, as an arm or arms, and adapted to be operated independently of said sheave or pulley to run. up between the same and said draft applying means, to wedge or look the latter against opposite holding, means, as said frame, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with a rope sheave or pulley and a suitable frame to hold the same, a pivoted arm or means extending beyond the rim at one or both sides of said sheave, a rope clutch or wedge pivoted to said arm or means outside said rim, and formed with one end projecting from said means and adapted to be run up underneath said rope in the groove of said sheave, and means independent of said sheave for operating said arm or means, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. 7
4. In combination with a sheave or pulley and suitable means to support the same, an arm, or suitable means, pivoted cross-wise at one side of said. sheave or pulley, and adapted to carry a clutching or wedging means outside of the rim of said sheave or pulley, and means on the opposite side of the pivot of said side arm or other means whereby means may be attached to operate the same, substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with a sheave or pulley and suitable means to support the same, an arm, lever, or frame pivoted cross-wise at one side of said pulley supporting means, a clutching or wedging means carried by said arm or lever at one side of its pivot, means at the opposite side of said pivot whereby suitable means may be connected to operate said arm or lever, and means against which the rope or other draft applying means may be clamped by said clutching or wedging means to hold the same, substantially as set forth.
and a suitable frame for same, an arm or lever as O, pivoted at one side of said frame cross-wise of said sheave or pulley, a clutch or wedge, as J, pivoted at one end of same to said arm or lever outside of the rim of said sheave or pulley, as at J with the opposite end or point adapted to run up in the groove of said sheave underneath a rope or other elevating or draft applying means, suitable holding means, as the frame of said sheave or pulley outside or above said rope or draft applying means, against which said means may be clamped or wedged to hold the same, and an eye or other means whereby suitable means, as a rope or cord a, may be attached to said arm or lever on the opposite side of its pivot to operate the same, substantially as set forth.
7. In combination with the draft or elevating rope and the pulley or sheave over which said rope is run, a rope clutch, wedge, or dog adapted to run up with its free end in the groove of said sheave or pulley and clutch or wedge said rope to prevent its running back, and an arm or lever pivoted on the axle of said pulley and adapted to carry said clutch or wedge at one end independent of said pulley, and formed with an extension or projecting end at the opposite side of said axle, to which a rope or cord may be attached to operate said clutch, substantially as set forth.
8. In combination with the elevating rope, and the pulley or sheave over which said pulley rope is run, a rope clutch or dog adapted to run up in the groove of said pulley to clutch said rope, and suitable arms or frames attached at the sides of said pulley and adapted to carry said clutch, one of said arms being formed with an extension beyond its pivot whereby it may be operated to raise said clutch and the opposite arm with a suitable stop to prevent said clutch falling too far when released from said elevating rope, substantially as setforth.
9. In a clutch pulley apparatus, in combination with the draft or elevating rope D, the pulley 3 over which said rope is run, and the frame for said pulley, a rope clutch J, adapted to be run up in the groove of said pulley, and to clutch or wedge said rope against. the frame above said pulley, a lever O, by which said clutch may be operated to engage said draft rope, and a lever or arm 0, formed with a hooked end 0 adapted to act as a stop by engaging the frame of said pulley, substantially as set forth.
10. The combination of the pulley y, the rope D, the clutch J, the lever O, and the cord at, whereby said lever and said clutch may be operated, substantially as set forth.
