COMBINATION TABLE AND BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 10, 1911.
Application filed September 3, 1910. Serial No. 580,404.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES EsoHnN- My invention relates to improvements in combination tables and beds. an object of the invention being to provide a combination device of this character which may be readily unfolded and utilized as a bed, and which when folded will have the ordinary appearance of a table giving no appearance whatever of a bed.
A further object is to provide a combination device of this character which will perform with equal efiiciency both of its func tions as a bed and table, and which will be neat and attractive in appearance, strong and durable in use, and easily operated to form the same into a table or a bed.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and a1.- rangemcnts of parts, as will be more fully hereiim't'ter described and pointed out in the claims.
of Pennsylvania,
l l l l l l In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, I
-is a perspective view illustrating the device in its table form. Fig. 2, is a similar view showing the device open in its bed form. Fig. 3, is a view in longitudinal section of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of Fig. 2. Figs. 5, and 6, are enlarged fragmentary views in vertical and horizontal section illustrating the manner of securing one of the adjustable legs. F ig. 7, is a view in cross section of Fig. 1. Fig. 8, is a view in 1011 gitudinal section of Fig. 1. Fig. 9, is a perspective view of the combined spring and mattress, and Fig. 10, is a detail perspective view of one of the adjustable legs.
Tn constructing my improvements, I em- I ploy preferably four fixed legs 1, which are secured to a shelf 2, and are connected at their upper ends by bars 3, three of these bars 3 being employed as shown most clearly in Fig. 2. Aboxa constituting the top of the table is connected by 3, and in two of the corner blocks 6 of the box, adjustable legs 7 are mounted. These hinges 5 with the bars 'tion shown in Fig. 2, to
legs 7 are adapted, when the box is in an inverted position to form the table top, to project through the bars 3 into longitudinal recesses 3 in fixed legs 1, and are secured in said legs by means of rods 9 which are adapted to engage in any of a series of notches 10 in the legs 7, and securely lock the box on the fixed legs 1. The blocks 6 are also provided with spring pressed rods 11,
so as to lock the adjustable legs in the posisupport the box in its open position as shown. In Fig. 1, it will be noted that there appear four of these adjustable legs 7, as a matter of fact two of these legs are mere blinds so as to give a uniform appearance to the table, and the legs are provided with rings 12 to facilitate their movement.
The rods 9 and 11 are mounted alike, that is, they are supported in brackets 13 and have coiled springs 14 thereon secured at their respective ends to the bracket and to the rod. The bottom 15, and one side 16 of the box a, are made separate from the other portions of the box, and are connected by hinges 17, so that when the box is swung to the position shown in Fig. 2, these parts 15 and 16 will be supported upon the shelf 2, and at one edge of the part 15 an ornamental railing 18 corresponding to the railings 19 at the ends of the shelf.
20, represents a sectional or folding coinbined spring and mattress which is adapted to lit the bed shown in Fig. 2, when open, and also adapted to be folded so as to fit within the box as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. hen the mattress is in the box, the bottom 15 and one side 16 of the box are folded up and are suitably locked to the box by means of catches 21, when the box may be swung over on its hinges 5 onto the bar 3. The adjustable legs 7 are then locked in the fixed legs 1, and the table is complete, strong and steady. In order that a smooth surface may be provided for the bed when the bottom 15 and the side 16 are down, a thickness of material 22 is secured to the under face of the table top, and to this material 22 side 16 is hinged, this material 22, side 16, and bottom 15 being of the same thickness.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
