SAW-I-IANDLE.
Specieation of Letters Itatent.
Patented Jan. 10, 1911.
Application led April 2, 1910. Serial No. 553,037.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. MINToN, citizen of the United States, residing yat Philomath, in the county of Benton and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to saw handles and has for its object to effect certain improvements in this class of devices, whereby the handle may be readily attached to or detached from a saw.
A further object of the invention is to provide a handle, capable of being adjusted at any angle or inclination with respect to the longitudinal plane of the saw', thereby to facilitate the sawing of logs and the like.
A further object is to provide a saw with relatively stationary and movable handle sections, one of which is provided with a locking pawl adapted to engage a toothed sleeve carried by the socket of the mating handle section, thereby to lock the saw' in different positions of angular adjustment.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices, so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference` is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a saw handle constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same partly in elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view taken on the 'line 4--11 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the locking pawl detached.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The device comprises a casing or housing 5 having a transverse bore 6 and providedl with oppositely disposed sockets 7 and 8,
one of which receives a relatively stationary.
handle section 9, the exterior walls of the other socket 8 being threaded for engagementy with a relatively movable handle 'section 10.
Extending laterally from one side of the casing 5 and preferably formed integral therewith is a tubular extension 11, the interior walls of which, are preferably disposed in horizontal alinernent with the bore 6 so as to form a continuation of the latter.
Mounted for rotation in the4 extension 11 is a tubular member or sleeve 12 having one end thereof extended within the bore 6 and provided with a circumferential 'row of ratchet teeth 13 and its opposite end threaded exteriorly at 14C for engagement with the interiorly threaded walls of a nipple 15 carried by a saw guard or shield 16. The guard or shield 16 is provided with a longitudinally disposed seating groove 17 for the reception of the adjacent end of the saw, indicated at 18, the lower end of the guard 16 being bent laterally to produce an arm 19 adapted to form a housing for the teeth of the saw and thus prevent the latter from coming in contact with and cutting or otherwise lacerating the hand of the operator.
Housed within the tubular member or sleeve l2 is a clamping device, preferably in the form of a bolt 20 having' its head 21 bearing against a shoulder 22 formed in the bore 6 and its reduced end bifurcated to form an intermediate slo-t for the reception of the saw 18, there being transversely alined openings formed in the bifurcated end of the bolt 20 to permit the insertion of a fastening device or pin 23, which latter extends through a corresponding opening in the bottom of the saw, as shown.
A washer 24 is interposed between the head 21 of the bolt and the adjacent end of the tubular member 12, said washer being formed of yieldable material so as to prevent injury to the parts when the latter is adjusted to clamp the saw in position on the guard,16.
An opening 25 is formed in the socket member or casing 5 opposite the head` of the bolt 20, the walls of said opening being threaded for engagement with a correspondingly threaded plug or closure 26. The inner face of the plug uG is preferably concaved to form a seat for the head of said bolt 20, while the outer face thereof is provided with a transverse kerf or key seat 27, so that by introducing a screw driver or other tool in said seat 27 and rotating the plug 2G, the latter may be removed, thus to permit the insertion or removal of the clamping bolt 20.
The free end of the arm 19 is preferably flattened at 28 so that when the saw 18 is removed from the guard, the flattened por tion 28 o-f the arm 19 may be inserted in the seat 27 of the'plug for rotating` the latter.
vThe movable handle section 10 is .provided witha collar 29 having its interior walls threaded at 30 for engagement with the threads on the socket 8, said collar bein@ provided with a transverse partitiomor diaphragm 31 which extends across the adjacent end of the handle section 10, and is provided with an opening 32.
Disposedwithin the socket member 8, is a locking pawl 33 having a reduced portion or neck 3 4 which extends through the opening 32 and is upset at 35, there-being a recess 3G formed in the adjacent end of the movable handle section 10 to permit rotation ofthe handle on the-socket 8 to effect the clamping of the 4sleeve 12 without 'binding or wedgi'ng action between the parts.
The lower end of the'locking pawl 33 extends through a square opening 3G formed in the casing or housing 5 and is provided with a concave face 37 havingteeth or serrations formed thereon and corresponding in shape to and adapted to engage the teeth on the sleeve 12 for the purpose of holding the saw in different positions of angular adjustlnent. Thus it will be seen that by .rotating themovable handle section 10, the pawl 33 will be forced into engagement with the teethA on the sleeve 12 andthus lock the latter'in engagement with the casing '5. By now holding the guard 16 stationary and rotating both handles in a vertical plane, the tubular extension 11, together with the sleeve 12 may be adjusted rearwardly, thus Icausing the clamping member 20 to force the saw 18 within its seat 17 and etfectually prevent iwabbling movement of the same during the sawing o-peration.
In order to detach the handle sections, it is merely necessary to rotate said handle sections in the opposite direction which moves the-fastening device or bolt 20 in the direction of the saw 18 and thus disengages the adjacent end of the saw from the seating groove 17 so that by removing the pin 23,
the saw blade maybe readily detached.
vWhen it is desired to adjust the handle at any angle or inclination with respect to the longitudinal plane of the saw, it is merely necessary to rotate the handle section 10 until the pawl 33 is disengaged from the teeth on the sleeve 12, thus permitting both handle sections to be rotated in a vertical plane until the desired adjustment is effected, thel handle sections being locked in adjusted po K sition by again. rotating the movable handle section 10 until the active end of the pawl 33 engages the teeth on the sleeve 12.
The device is simple in construction and thoroughly practical in operation and will etfeetually hold the handle in different positions of adjustment with respect to the saw.
