.RALPH W. CRARY, or, srnnGEoN DAY, vv
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA."
IsooNsIN,v AND ORANGE E. McMEANs, or
TIME'AND WAGE COMPUTER.
Be it known that we. RALPH .,W. CaAnr,-
Sturgeon Bay, in the county of Doorland State of VVisconsin. and ORANGE E. Mc- MrANs. a citizen'of the United States. re-
tlie county of Marion and State of Indiana have invented certain new -and1useful Improvements in Time and Wage Computers, of which the following is a specification. p
In the-.production of canned goods the work of a large number of laborers required andthese laborers are engaged Viii various shiftsoi groups throughout tlie4-en tire twenty-fourhours of each dav during ythe packing season andthe individual laborers are apt tobe quite irregular in the time vvarious rates depending upon the. character of labor and some meansv needs to he provided by which the actual time ot emploi-- ment and the character ot' employment mayf be readily indicated and thereafter coinputed and reduced into terms ol either hours or wage.
The object of our invention is. therefore. to produce means by whichthe above stated results may be readily reached and to that end we. have provided a. peculiar time card to be `iveii to each employee each twentyfour hours. and a computing or integrating scale by means of which each of the timev cards may, when properly marked, bcclearly reduced into terms of eit'lierhours or wage.
While 4the above recited means has bcenespecially designed for use by canne-rs and packers it is to be understood that with very means may be readily adapted for use in many other lines of employment.'
The accompanying drawings illustrate our` invention.
Figure l is a face view ot' tlie'tiine card constructed and arranged in accordance withour invention and Fig. Q a face vview of a computingscale (preferably transparent) h v means of which indications on a time card such as shown in Fig. 1. ina be reduced to terms of. hours (and fractions thereof) or wage.
Referring to Fie'. l of the drawings.l the time card shown therein mayv be of an 7 desired size and shape and should be provided 12noon 1until 1 oclock a. 'ni.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 3.11, 10, 191,1, Application mea December 16,1999. serial No. 533,435.
with a space A to receive the name of the'4 employee and a space B to receive the designating -number of the employee. Itis convenient and desirable also to have a space C in which the date iiiav'be placed and spaces D. E, and F in which maybe written' a total time of employment in the morning.
afternoon and the whole .day respectively.
In a space G we arrange a list ofdesignations of the different classes of employmentA .and in a space H' Alist; ofrates per hour. We also provide two seriesof uniform spaces vI beginning at 1 and ending at 1 .passing through 12. so as to thus indicate the hours beginning atx- .11A a. in. and 2 tp. in.; identical ,at 12 and endingiat l2 passing through 1Q said' figures thus designating the hours from alongsideof the spacesI and `J are equal 'spaces K of any desired butequal extent' so as to indicate equal subdivisions ot' an hour. ln thepresent case these sub-divisions are quarter hours. nothing less than -15 'minutes being counted, and care should be exercised to see that the subdivisions K are uniform throughout.
In the present instance we show the card provided Vwith tivo series of spaces I and J for the following reason. If a single series of twenty-four spaces I and a correspond ing series of one hundred and eight .spaces K were arranged 'in a straightline the card would be 'too' loiigfor convenienthandling.` it the spaces K were of suticient' size to 'facilitate easy handling, and it is therefore Iadvisable .to divide the iset or 1entire number of. spaces into t.\vo,sei ies. In the particular industry for whichthis card was especially designed the .'ns'iia'l lunch period' extends froni tw'elve'ut'o t'wooclock, ditl'ereiiteniplovees taking their -nooningl at diiiereiittimes. and it-"avas found convenient. to get all of the time of any employee before lunch or after lunch into a singlerecord. .lt is for this reason that the series of spaces l is arranged to take care of the time from mid night. until two p. in. and the. series of space` 'J is arranged to take care of the-time from twelve. noon until one o`cloek a. mf, thus providiiig-eacli series of spaces with the entire noon period.
For the purpose of reducing the record Yof a car-d'to terms ot' hours or wagesvve pro-v vide the scale shown in Fig. Q. This seal'.-
Arranged' 'iiniformjspaes and a. series of J, beginning may be made of any suitable material but we prefer to malte it of a strip L of transparent material preferably 'exible such as Celluloid. On this scale we provide aseries of twenty-five spaces M having the same length as spaces I and J and alongside this series is aseries of spaces Nv corresponding ,in extent to the series K. lVe then provide a plurality of seriesof columns of spaces P each representing a wage scale.- The spaces' in anyoolumn P correspond to tlie spacesin columnN and each spacewill contain that figure which will represent the total wage for the indicated time at the indicated wage scale.
' cards shown in Fig. 1 at time of beginning lof work onl any day.y and 'a punch or other e in'that space designating mark will be ma K which will designate the actual time 'of beginning of wor r.
lVhen the employee stops for lunch another indication willV be lplaced in the pro er space K alongside of the column' I an when the employee begins aft-er lunch a proper designating mark will be placed in the proper space K alongside of column AJ and a similar mark made to indicate the time of quitting at the end of the day. A proper designating mark will also be made in column G to indicate the kind of employment anda mark' in column H'to indicate theA wage scale.
- ployee will turn in'his or her card at the end of employment for the day (or ni ht) .and the auditor will then takethe sca e L and, by using the' proper column P, .and
ling indicated by the time ofendi ployment, thus quickly obtaining t e totalv placing the .0 of the wage scale column at the mark indicati the. time of beginning, will note the vrea ingindicated by the mark of lunch quitting and will then trans# fer the scale at the noted point to the time of beginning after lunch and take the eado emee for the day. While wage of that empio eing taken the auditor these readings are may also take readings in column M so as to determine the time of employment before luncheon and after luncheon and the total time of employment so as to make the proper entries in lspaces D, E, and F By the use of tliecards shown in Fig. 1 it In use an employee is given one. of the Each em-v our` hands and seals.
and the initial end of tlie second series indieating several adjacent and identical periods of employment, and an integrating scale carrying a single series of uniform spaces eacli .kha'vingtlie .same extent as the spaces of the time card and indicating suc- A cessive equal -cumulated periods-of emplo meiit. I
2. Tliecombination of a time card having thereon two series of uniform spaces indicating successive and equal periods of employment, the final end of thefirst.seriesand the initial end ofthesecond series indicating severaladjacent and identical periods of employment, and an integrating scale carrying a single series of uniform spaces each having the same extent astlie spaces of the time card and indicating successive equal cumulated periods of employment, said in- `te ating scale also carrying 'a plurality of co umns of uniform spaces corresponding to thetime card spaces and carrying cumulated-wage indications.
3. A time card carrying two series of uniform spaces -each space indicating a minimum employment eriod, and the final end of one series and t e initial end of the other series bothindicating the same several adjacent minimum employment periods.
