INVENTOR WITNESSES TTED STATES PATENT OFFTGTC.
HARRY F. HITNER, OF MOUNT VERNON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS COMPANY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYL- VANIA.
CAP LIFTING AND MOVING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 10, 1911.
Application filed March 3, 1909. Serial No. 481,049.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IIARRY F. HrrNnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gap Lifting and Moving Devices, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention has particular relation to an improved form of apparatus for moving and lifting certain portions of a furnace construction such for example as is commonly used in the formation of glass cylinders by drawing.
The first of the objects of this invention is the provision of a simple mechanical device of the character specified, which will be economical in construction, not likely to get out of repair; which will be certain and accurate in its operation, and which will be readily controllable. Another object of this invention is the provision of a combination lifting and side shifting mechanism such as will procure a double movement of the part which is to be shifted, all subject to control by a simple actuating device.
The above as well as such other objects as may hereinafter appear, I attain by means of a construction which I have illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 illustrates.diagrammatically in elevation the improvement specified, as applied to a glass furnace, Figure 2 illustrates a detail of the same, more clearly bringing out the mechanical features of construction, and Fig. 3-is an enlarged detail view of the lost motion socket connection.
In carrying out my invention I arrange as shown, a glass furnace a portion whereof is indicated at 3 and the glass wherein is indicated at 4, with the ordinary topstone 5 above the surface of the glass, said top stone having an opening 5 through which the drawing is to be accomplished and being supported from operating mechanism (not shown) by means of cables 5*, said opening being covered by a cap or lid 6 which when the drawing is to be effected must be raised and shifted laterally out of place and then brought back again after the cylinder formed has been taken out of the way.
As a means for supporting the o crating devices I provide the frame-work and 8 and above the cap 6 I arrange a thrust bar or rod 9 and a lifting cord or cable 10, said cable being connected to a crank arm or a couple of crank arms 11, as indicated in Figure 2, and passing over a cable pulley 12 so that it will pull upwardly upon the cap 6 when the crank arms 11 are revolved. Means for driving said crank arms are provided by the motor 13 having the circuit wires 14 and a switch 15, and actuating the crank arms through the instrumentality of the worm gear 13*, the motion of said motor as used by me being preferably in the same direction, requiring thus only an ordinary start and stop switch for make and break circuit as shown.
At the lower end of the rod 9 is a socket l6 pivoted to the cap 6 at 17 and provided with slots 18. The lower end of the rod 9 slidably engages the socket and carries laterally projecting lugs or fingers 19 engaging the slot 18. This permits a relative movement between the rod and socket. The lost motion connection permits a vertical movement before the cap is moved laterally and while this sliding connection is preferably at the lower end of the rod as illustrated it might obviously be at any other desired point.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
Assuming that it be desired to raise the cap 6 the switch is manipulated to close the circuit, starting the motor 13 which by the worm 13' will cause rotative movement of the arms 11, and pull upward on the cord or cable 10, the first upward movement because of the slip connection between the bar 9 and the socket 16, being a movement in a vertical direction, that is to separate the cap or lid 6 from the part on which it rests and free it from contact with the latter, after which when the thrust bar or rod 9 comes into action it will cause a swinging or outwardly lateral movement of the cap 6 about the pivot 18 as a center as indicated in thedrawing, thus moving said cap 6 out of the way so that the cylinder can be drawn through the aperture 5 The connection of the cable 10 to the crank arms 11 provioes a mechanical means for limiting the motion in the several directions and is an effective and accurate device for securing just the desired degree of motion and no more or less. When it is desired to replace the cap 6 the switch 15 is again closed causing the motor L3 to start again and continuing the rotative motion of the crank arms 11 which after they pass the central point will allow the cable 10 to travel downwardly and the cap (3 to return and finally descend vertically into place upon the opening 5.
From the operation above described it is evident that by the apparatus which 1 provide I secure a very easily manipulated and controlled mechanism and one which will not require the employement of any electrically actuated limit switches or other. automatic devices for restricting" or defining the motions of the parts aside from the actuating means employed, and one which will not be likely to get out of order and will with, the greatest simplicity accomplish the desired results.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. A device for lifting and moving a portion of a glass furnace, comprisingin combination, a. raising cable, a thrust bar arranged to be placed in compression and swing said portion late ally when the cable is raised, and means for actuating said cable, substantially as described.
2. A device for lifting and moving a portion of a glass furnace, comprising in combination, a raising cable, a thrust bar, and a crank arm connected with said cable, substantially as described.
3. A device for lifting and moving a portion of a glass furnace, comprising in combination, a raising cable, a thrust bar, a crank arm connected With said cable, and power means for driving said crank arm, substantially as described.
it. A device for lifting and moving a p01 tion of a glass furnace, comprising in com bination, a raising cable, a thrust bar, a crank arm connected with said cable, and power means for driving said crank arm, ciid power means being arranged to drive always in one direction, sul'istantially as de scribed.
A lifting and moving device for a portion of a furnace comprising in combination, a. lifting cable, means for actuating said litting' cable, a thrust bar, and a lost motion connection for said thrust bar, substantially as described.
(3. A litting and moving device tor a portion of a furnace comprising in combination, a lifting cable, means for actuating said liitting cable, a thrust bar, and a pivotal support for said thrust bar at one end and a lost motion connection therefor suitably disposed, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunder signed my name in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
