HANDLE FOR LOCKS AND LATCI -IES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3, 1911.
Application filed June 18, 1909. Serial No. 502,900.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. VVAL'rnns, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and Stateof Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Locks and Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in handles for locks and latches, and more particularly to such handles for use on the doors of vehicles. and its object is to provide improved means for holding the late or washer thereon by which it is rotatively secured in place, and to provide the device with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
-Heretofore it has been customary to secure this late on the handle by means of either a divi ed ring inserted in a circumferent-ial groove, which device is insecure on account of the division of the ring,-or a ring or band has been screw threaded upon the cylindrical member and then secured by soldering or otherwise, which operation is expensive and not altogether satisfactory,
being unsightly on account of the solder thereon.
My invention consists in the novel'arrangement and mode of application of a securing member that is integral, and not liable to become detached and which requires no soldering or other securing in the nature of screw threads, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanyng drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section of the same; Fig. 3 a
detail in vertical section illustrating the method by which the ring is secured in place; and, Fig. at a detail of the ring before compressing the same into the groove.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 represents the angular shank of the device adapted to operate the latch. 2 the integral cylindrical member of the handle in which this shank is fixed. 3 the handle of the device. 4 a plate in which the member 2 is rotative.
5 is a ringinserted in a circumferential groove 6, whereby the plate 4 is securely held in placebetween said ring and a circumferential shoulder 7 on the. member 2. This ring is integral and is first made large enough to pass over the integral cylindrical memberIQ, and opposite the circumferential groove 6 therein and is then compressed and reduced in circumference by the action of compressing dies adapted to apply radial pressure thereto throughout its entire circumference, whereby it is shrunk into the circumferential groove and securely held therein' This integral ring thus affords a secure and satisfactory means for retaining the plate 4 in place, and is devoid of the objections referred to.
What I claim is A handle having an integral cylindrical portion provided with a circumferential I \Vilnesses:
