A pawl carrier (i is journalcd by the center on the shaft roll, and one end of the carrier is provided with a pawl 7, normally pressed by a spring 9 into engagement with a ratchet wheel 8 secured to the shaft of the roll. The other end of the carrier is provided with va pin 10, engaging a slot 11 in one end of a lever 12, pivoted to the adjacent standard as at 13, and a spring 111 is provided for returning the lever and the awl carrier. A link 15 connects the other end of the lever with one arm 16 ot an elbow lever, pivoted as at 17,to a bracket 18, the adjacent standard 3. The other arm 19 of the elbow lever is sisting of an arm 2() extending upward from a sleeve 21 adjustable on the rod`22 of the typewriter and retained in its adjusted position by a set screw 23.
