To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LLOYD DOUGLAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Gatos, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bracket-Seats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bracket seat for the use of carpenters, painters, shinglers, and other mechanics in working upon shingled roofs, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which will form a firm and secure seat support and which. after use, may be folded in compact form for storage and transportation.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device as mounted for use upon a roof. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device as unfolded for use, and showing in dotted lines the supporting elements arranged in folded position. Fig. a is a side elevation of the device as folded for storage and transportation.
The device comprises a platform com posed of a central section 1 and relative front and rear sections 2 and 3 united by hinges 4 so as to permit said sections 2 and 3 to swing to a position at right angles to the section 1 and parallel to each other, whereby the device may be folded in close compass for storage or transportation, as shown in Fig. 4. A latch 5 is pivoted to the free longitudinal edge of the section 3 and has a hook end to engage a headed pin or stud 6 011 the free longitudinal edge of the section 2, by which the parts may be fastened in folded condition.
Upper supporting bars 7 are pivoted, as at 8, at different distances from their for ward ends to the under side of the section 2, so that said bars may be swung to an inoperative position substantially in parallel relation longitudinally of said section, or swung to extend from front to rear across the under sides of all three sections, 1, 2 and 3 to form supports to prevent collapse of said sections when the platform is in use.
The rear ends of the bars are adapted when disposed in supporting position to be engaged with hooked spring latches 9 on the platform section 3, said latches having beveled free ends to permit the bars to slide into and out of engagement therewith. The forward ends of the bars 7 have bifurcated portions 10 to receive the upper or forward ends of lower supporting bars 11 which are adapted to assume an inclined position and rest upon the surface of the roof and are provided at their upper and lower ends with holding spurs 12 and 13. Each bar 11 is formed at its lower end with a longitudinal series of transverse openings 14.
The rear ends of the bars 7 are formed with eyes 15 to which are pivotally connected the upper ends of legs 16 adapted to depend vertically from the rear of the platform when the device is set up for use. The relatively lower ends of these legs are forked, as at 17 to straddle the rear ends of the bars 11 and are transversely perforated for the passage of securing bolts 18 provided with winged clamping nuts 19. Loosely pivoted to a bracket plate 20 on the section 3 are braces 21 adapted to extend outwardly and downwardly in divergent relation and having angularly bent apertured lower ends 22 adapted to engage the bolts 18, by which the legs and braces may be coupled to the lower supporting bars to stay and reinforce the same from the upper longitudinal bars and the rear platform section.
Figs. 1 and 2 show the device as set up for use, from which it will be seen that the platform is supported in an open and horizontal position to provide a firm seat support for the workman, and that the bars 11 rest upon the surface of the roof and are firmly secured thereto by the spurs 12 and 13. The supporting elements in this arrangement have a rigid relationship so that the bracket as a whole in operative position may be detached from any one portion of the roof and shifted to another portion as occasion requires.
When it is desired to fold the device for transportation, the legs 16 and braces 21 are disconnected from the bolts and the bars 7 withdrawn from engagement with the latches 9, whereupon the parts may be folded to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3, allowing the platform to be collapsed in the manner shown in Fig. 4:, thus disposing the device in convenient form for carriage or storage. The advantages of the device in this particular will be readily understood, and it will be apparent that the invention provides a simple, convenient and stable support for the use of mechanics of all kinds when working upon shingled roofs. By passing the bolts 18 through the openings 14: at different points along the length of the bars 11 the platform may be supported at different angles of inclination to the horizontal, as occasion may demand in performing different kinds of work.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A device of the character described comprising a foldable platform, upper sup porting bars pivoted at one end to said platform to swing to a position longitudinally or transversely thereof, latches carried by the platform for engagement by the free ends of the bars to secure them in a transversely arranged position, lower supporting bars pivoted at their upper ends'to the forward pivoted ends of the upper supporting bars and having spurs at their upper and lower ends, coupling legs pivoted to the free ends of the upper supporting bars, braces pivoted at one end of the platform, and means for detachably connecting the free ends ofthe lower supporting bars, legs and braces.

A device of the character described comprising a foldable platform, upper supporting bars pivoted at one end to said platform to swing to a position longitudinally or transversely thereof, latches carried by the platform for engagement by the free ends of the bars to secure them 1n a transversely arranged position, lower supporting bars pivoted at their upper ends to the forward pivoted ends of the upper supporting bars and having spurs at their' upper and lower ends, coupling legs pivoted to the free ends of the upper supporting bars, braces pivoted at one end to the platform, and means for detachably connecting the free ends of the legs and braces with the free ends of the lower supporting bars at diifer ent points along the length of the latter.
3. A device of the character described comprising a foldable platform composed of central and front and rear hinged sections, upper supporting bars pivoted at one end to the front section, latches carried by the rear section for securing the free ends of said bars thereto, lower supporting bars pivoted at their upper ends to the pivoted ends of the upper supporting bars and having spurs at the opposite ends thereof, coupling legs pivoted to the free ends of the upper supporting bars, braces pivoted at one end to the rear platform section, and means for adjustably connecting the free ends of the legs and braces with the free ends of said lower supporting bars.
