COUNTERBALANGED STAND 0R COVER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND C. ROB- nn'rs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Counter-balanced Stands or Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompany ing drawings.
This invention relates to a stand for a cheese board, cooker, or the like, and to certain features thereof wherebyready access to the interior is had and whereby an attractive exterior is obtained together with simplicity and durability of construction.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of one form of stand that embodies features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view in detail of counterbalance chains, guides, fitting and sheaves; Fig. 8 is a view in detail in section of a bell top and fastening means; and Fig. 4 is a view in detail of a modified form of chain guide.
Referring to the drawings, a base 1 that is preferably annular and is supported by feet 2 carries an arched, upright frame that, in the preferred form, is constructed of a pair of tubular arms 3, curved near the top to meet at their upper ends in a fitting 1. The latter is preferably of channel section withdepending flanges 5, running into tubular sockets 6 at the ends in which the arms 3 are screwed as by screwthreads 7 or the like. A base 8 on the upper face of the web portion or the fitting has a guide aperture that is preferably in alinement with the center of the base 1. A stem 9 longitudinally reciprocable in the aperture, is screw-threaded or otherwise secured in an ornamental nut 10, with lateral vent openings 11 between its ends. A centrally apertured spindle 12 whose lower portion is preferably flared or tapered with a flange 13 thereon, is secured in the lower end of the nut 10, and a ferrule 14 thereon, of suitable desi for a. handle, secures the top of a bell 15 o lass or other transparent or suitable material, against the flange 13 between packing rings or gaskets 16. Counterbalance weights 17 that slide on the arms 3 and are pre erably elongated cylinders in shape, are connected to the nut 10 by chains 18. The

lower ends of the latter each extend through an inner slot 19 in the arm 8 into a groove or notch 20 near the lower part of the weight where it is secured by a cross-pin 21. Each chain passes through an arm 3 over a sheave 22 journaled on a pin 23 between the flanges 5 of the fitting 4. The arms may each be solid with an outer guide groove 24: in which the chain travels, as indicated in Fig. 1.
By this construction, a neat and attractive stand is obtained suitable for use on a lunch counter or in a restaurant. The bell is easily raised and is at all times ventilated through the axial opening in the spindle and the lateral orifices in the stem nut.
Obviously, changes in details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not wish to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
hat I claim as my invention is l. A stand comprising a base, a pair of upright arms thereon, a fitting to which the inbent upper ends of the arms are secured, a stem longitudinally reciprocable in a guide aperture of the fitting, counterweights re ciprocable on the arms, flexible connections between the weights and stem running in the arms, a bell, a longitudinally apertured spindle extending through the top of the bell, and a nut coupling the spindle and stem having lateral apertures in communication with the spindle bore.

A stand comprising a. base, a pair of upright arms thereon having longitudinal guideways, a fitting having an upper web, depending flanges and a nipple at each end in which the inbent upper ends of the arms are secured, a stem longitudinally reciprocable through a guide aperture in the fitting, counterweights reciprocable on the arms, flexible connections between the weights and stem running in the guideways of the arms and through the nipples of the fitting, and a bell secured to the lower end of the stem, the

A stand comprising a base, a pair of upright, tubular arms, a fitting with end nipples in which the inbent upper ends of the arms are secured and a central transverse guide aperture, a stem longitudinally reciprocable in the aperture, counterweights longitudinally reoiprocable on the arms, flexible connections passing through the arms and nipples whose upper ends are connected to the stem and whose lower ends pass through longitudinal slots in the arms and are connected to the lower ends of the weights, and a bell secured to the lower end of the stem and provided with a vent.

A stand comprising a base, a pair of upright, tubular arms, a fitting with end nipples in which the inbent upper ends of the arms are secured and a central transverse guide aperture, a stem longitudinally reciprocable in the aperture, counterweights longitudinally reciprocable on the arms, flexible connections passing through the arms and nipples Whose upper ends are connected to the stem and whose lower ends pass through longitudinal slots in the arms and are connected to the lower ends of the weights, guide sheaves in the fitting for the flexible connections, a bell, a longitudinally apertured spindle extending through the top of the bell, and a nut coupling the spindle and stem having lateral apertures in communication with the spindle bore.
