In the said device I have a construction adapted to lock an elevatorv ata landing in in such manner that the elevator cannot move up or down until the gate has been closed and the locking mechamsm thereby released, and said device comprises a ate with a rack R on its lower edge enga e by a pinion P upon a screw shaft S fixe in a box C at the a landing. .' so that when a landing is reached and the dooris opened, as usual, the movement of t e oor causes the screw to rotate and to c'arr. the bolts inward into said holes, thus locking the elevators The foregoing construction, however, required something more to make it complete because if the operator should turn on the power before he closed which will his door and while the bolts were still in engagement excessive strains would come on the bolts and somethin would be liable to be broken. Hence I ave devised means prevent theturning on of the power, whet er it be hydraulic, electric or other. ower, before the door is closed and the ho ts' are thereby withdrawn.

L represents the power controlling lever adapte to be operated as such levers usuall are and which governs the power by whic the elevator is operated. In this case also as in my former construction, the elevator man has to do simly with the operating lever L and the gate and the mec anism for locking the said lever to prevent operation while the' gate is open is governed from the gate through the bolts 4. One form of 'such mechanism is seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 8, and another and possibly a more simple form in Fig. 4.
