Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 97,990, dated December 14, 1569.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, J.. H. TARPLEY, of Greensborough, Guilford county, in the State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Olevis for Plows, Oultivators, Harrows, 85e.; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The nature or essence of my invention consists in providing for the front end of a plowbeam, cultivator, or other implement a head, ofcast-iron or other metal, consisting of a socket to receive the end of the beam and a curved front plate having one or more notched ribs, 'which hold in place an adjustable strap,which is secured upon the beam, and to which the draft-chain may be connected by a hook or otherwise.

In the drawings hereinbefore mentioned, Figure lis a side elevation of my improved clevis, and Fig. 2 a top vieii7 of the same.

A is a portion of a plow-beam, which enters the socket B, as indicated by dotted lines in'Fig. 2, and may be secured by a bolt or pin through the flanges r 1'. The curved front plate, D, has on its face the notched or toothed ribs E, and the strap F bent twice at right an gles, and secured upon the beam by the bolt G, is held in place by these notches, and may be readily adjusted by taking out the screw-bolt G and placing the strap in any notch that will` best guide the plow, as desired, and replacing the bolt. The hook H on the draft-chain I may be placed either between, above, or below the ribs E, to elevate or depress the plow, as required; and in order that a wide furrow may be taken, the plate D is extended on the furrow side, and strengthened by the braces S S, connecting this extension with the socket B. The distance from the plate D to the bolt G should of course be about equal to the radius or half-diameter of the circle of which the curvature of the plate forms an arc.

By this construction and arrangement I produce at a small cost a very durable clevis, and one that is found to be convenient and efficient in a high degree.-
