DAVID ROBERTS, ALFRED ROWE BELLAMY, AND CHARLES JAMES, 0F GRANTI-IAM,
ENGLAND.
GOVERNOR FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID RoBER'rs,
ALFRED RowE BELLAMY, and CHARLES J AMES, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Spittlegate Iron WVorks, Grantham, in the county of Lincoln, England, engineers, have invented new and useful Improvements in Governors for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to the governing of internal combustion engines of the class in which air and gas or other inflammable vapor to form an explosive charge are introduced through separate inlets and thence through a charge valve into the combustion chamber of the engine.
Hitherto the governing of such engines has been effected mainly by controlling, through the medium of the governor, either the quantity or the quality of the explosive mixture, or by completely cutting ofi the supply of combustible in accordance with the load upon the engine. The first of these methods, that is to say, that in which the quantity of the explosive charge is regulated, is open to defects in practice, chief among which may be mentioned the fact that the variation in the volume of the charge causes a variation in the degree of compression to which such charge is subjected prior to ignition. Also the'method of governing by varying the quality of the mixture while leaving its volume fairly constant, is also open to objection, since the charge may become so poor that difficulty is experienced with the ignition thereof.
Now, our invention has for its object to provide a method of governing such en ines which is not open to the disadvantages a ove enumerated and possesses the same advantage of insuring an impulse every explosion stroke and to this end we proceed as follows, that is to say, we provide for varying the time or moment of opening and closing, and also the amount of lift, of both the gas valve and the charge valve without, however, altering the relative difference in the periods of opening and closing of the said two valves. By proceeding in this way the charge may be varied by the governor to suit the load upon the engine without the variation being accompanied by either of the disadvantages Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 27, 1910.

above enumerated to an extent appreciable in practice.
To enable the invention to be fully understood we will describe it by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side view partly in section of a part of an internal combustion engine fitted with one form of our improved mechanism. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are views similar to Figs. 1 and 2 respectively illustrating a modified form of the invention, and Fig. 5 is a side view illustrating a further modification.
The same letters of reference indicate the same or corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring first to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 a represents the cylinder of the engine and b the combustion chamber thereof. 0 is the charge valve which is mounted upon the stem d held in the bearing 6 from which it projects, the projecting end being connected to the two springs, f, f suspended from the stirrup 9, carried by the combustion chamber 7). These springs f, f normally hold the valve 0 upon its seat 0 72. is the gas valve which is carried by the spindle or stem 2', extending through the bushing. k is the tappet lever which actuates the stem d of the valve 0 the said lever being pivoted at 70 to a bracket 20 fixed upon the upper end of the combustion chamber 1). The outer end of the lever 70 is pivoted to the plunger-rod Z, which is adapted to be reciprocated in the bearing Z upon the bracket Z ,'bolted to the face of the combustion chamber 5. The lower end of this plunger-rod Z has fastened to it the piece m having its lower surface inclined. n is the taper. or wedge-piece which rests on the lever 0 which is pivoted at 0 and bears atits other end against the cam u upon the half speed shaft q. The wedge-piece n is connected by a link n to the levers n which are secured to the rocking shaft 42 which is carried by the brackets s and the levers are adapted to be oscillated by the link and lever mechanism n from the governor p which is driven from the half speed shaft 9 in the ordinary way. 12 is the tappet which is secured upon the plunger-rod Z, the saidtappet as it rises with the plunger-rod being designed to strike against the lower end of the rod w mounted in a bearing w in the bracket Z and connected at its upper end to one end piece a against the inclined surface of the piece at and thereby raises the plunger-rod Z so as to open the charge valve 0. lVhen the said plunger-rod Z has been lifted to a predetermined extent, the tappet 4) which it carries strikes the lower end of the rod to and thereby turns the bell-crank lever w so that it opens the gas or vapor valve h.-
As the cam a further rotates it lowers the wedge-piece 72 thereby permitting the plunger rod to drop, whereupon the gas or vapor valve it is first closed and thereafter the charge valve 0. As the speed of the engine varies the governor 79 moves the wedge-piece a relatively to the plunger-rod so that there is more or less lost motion between the wedge-piece n and the inclined surface of the piece m, whereby, as will be clearly understood, the point in the cycle at which the charge valve 0 is opened and the amount of lift given to the charge valve and the gas valve are varied in accordance with the load upon the engine notwithstanding that the times of opening and closing of the two valves relatively to one another remain constant.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, the lower end of the plunger-rod Zhas pivoted to it a finger M which is traversed by the rod N upon which are coiled the two springs N N upon either side of the finger M, the said springs bearing at one end against the opposite faces of the finger M and at the other end against stops upon the rod N. The latter, that is to say, the rod'N is carried by the free end of an arm 0 upon a spindle O mounted in the bearing 0 and adapted to be oscillated by the lever and link mechanism Q from the governor p. r is a link which is pivoted at r to the bottom of the bracket supporting the bearing 0 and is carried through the medium of the link S by the lever 25 which is pivoted at 25 and bears at its other end against the cam 10 upon the half-speed shaft g. In practice the lower end of the finger M is provided with a blade M and the contacting surface of the link r is serrated as shown at 1*, this construction being adopted to enable a better grip to be obtained between the said link and the finger.
The operation is as follows, that is to say, on the introduction of a charge into the combustion chamber 1), the cam a through the medium of the lever t, lifts the link 1" thus causing the said link to raise the finger M and thereby the plunger-rod Z, so as to open the charge-valve c. When the said I plunger-rod Z has been lifted to a predetermined extent the tappet 41 which it carries strikes the lower end of the rod w, and thereby turns the bell-crank lever 00 so that it 'opens the gas or vapor-valve it. As the cam a further rotates it lowers the link 7 thereby permitting the plunger-rod to drop whereupon the valve h is first closed and thereafter the charge-valve 0. As the speed of the engine varies the governor 10 moves the finger M relatively to the plunger-rod so that it assumes a greater or less inclination to the axis thereof, and the link 1" has more or less lost motion before it comes into contact with the lower end of the said finger, whereby, as will be clearly understood, the point in the cycle at which the charge-valve c is opened, and the amount of lift given to the charge-valve and the gas-valve are varied in accordance with the load upon the engine, notwithstanding that the times of opening and closing of the two valves relatively to one another remain constant.
In the modified construction illustrated in Fig. 5 the finger M is pivoted to the lever 25 while the pivoted link 1* is connected to the lower end of the plunger-rod Z. The finger M is under the control of the governor as in the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and the action of this form of our invention'is the same as that described with reference to the said figures.
The arrangement of valves, levers and rods as above described can be varied so long as the method of governing is maintained by varying the time or moment of opening and closing and also the amount of lift of both the gas valve and the charge valve without, however, altering the relative difierence in the periods of opening and closing of the said two valves.
Having now particularly described and ascertained. the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is 1. In an internal combustion engine of the kind hereinbefore referred to, the combination with the charge-valve and the gas-valve, of a reciprocating plunger-rod designed to control the said valves, a finger pivoted to the lower end of the plunger rod, the said finger co-acting with a pivoted member, such as a link, designed to be oscillated from a controlling cam, and link and lever mechanism connecting the governor or to the pivoted finger through the medium of an elasthe kind hereinbefore referred to, the combination with the charge-valve and the gasvalve, of a reciprocating plunger-rod designed to control the said valves, a pivoted member, such as a link, connected to the lower end of the plunger-rod and co-acting With a pivoted finger designed to be oscillated from a controlling cam, and link and lever mechanism connecting the governor to the pivoted finger through the medium of 10 an elastic or spring connection, substantially as hereinbefore described.
